exactly what it says on the tin. Any JRPG's on PC? Preferably more recent ones. I'm already playing Septerra Core, but would want something similar to, say, Xenoblade.

Well, it's mostly SNES era style ones.

On the rain-slick precipice of darkness 3, and 4. And any other Zeboyd games.
Doom and destiny.
Exit Fate. (Free)
Last Scenario. (Free)

And then there's Adorlea Games, but I'd only recommend those if you can find them in bundles. Really overpriced, amateurish looks. The Laxius Power series used to be free.

Oh and Agarest, but that's more of a Fire Emblem meets Disgaea turn-based tactics game.

i forgot about the half-minute hero series and this thing, which is apparently comming to steam

maybe someone more enlightened on the ways of JRPGs could elaborate on that, i have no idea what the game is about but it seems to have a bit of a following, its from XSEED so its likely going to be good

also the dark souls series is technically an JRPG series

The Last Remnant.

It has a really intersting group fighting mechanic, where in the endgame you control up to 18 units in up to 5 groups. This may sound strange for a JRPG but in my opinion it works out really well. If you read up on it, keep two things in mind: The XBOX veriosn was a technical disaster and had some other issues as well and can not be compared to the PC version. And resulting from that bad XBOX version the PC ratings were influenced negativly. I think if you judge the PC version on its own it's somewhere between a 7 or 8 but with the potential to get you really hooked, if you don't mind the flaws. A bit like Alpha Protocol in that regard.

Finally, I must only warn you of two things:

The main character is extremly annoying albeit my forum name beeing his^^

The game is criminally underexplained, you can miss a lot of content if you don't read up on it yourself. I played my first playthrough without any guides and handled myself quite well but my second one was completly different due to using external sources of knowledge.

Have fun. :)

I...was gonna suggest a bunch of really good RPGmaker JRPGs...but then you said you were looking for something like Xenoblade.

I...can't really think of any like that off the top of my head...

Uuughh...Tell me about it. The fact that the plot dragged on and on so slowly and the main character was such a total MORON eventually killed the game for me. I mean, the battle system was neat and all, but I decided other games were more worth my time.

This is Japan's Betrayal at Krondor, a tragically unknown PC RPG, with actual strategic and tactical depth in both adventure (e.g. avoid and sneak attack enemy parties) and combat (turn based with grid, every character has decent set of options), and with real stories about people and life (and a touch of politics) rather than the usual dude growing up and going to kill some big bad. The fairly original (for JRPG) cast of characters helps a lot too.

More FFT than X-COM.

You travel the overworld in a pretty standard jRPG way, but when you touch enemies (they are not random) you basically go into an Final Fantasy Tactics sort of combat system. It's actually a lot of fun, and is one of my favorite psp games. Also the sequel (Second Chapter) is coming to PC and PSP with help from Carpe Fulgur (also translated Recettear, Chantelise, and Fortune Summoners)

you have my attention now

i might be indifferent towards RPGs (with VERY few exceptions), but if theres a genre i absolutely adore, is SRPGs, to the wishlist it goes

i think i should just accept the fact that list is never going to get smaller, no matter how many steam sales take place

There is Kamidori God Catching Alchemy Meister. Its a SRPG with gigantic crafting section which is required in part to win the game. Only downfall to it is that it is considered an adult game with nudity/sex. Game is deep though as far as gameplay. The story itself is pretty generic though.

While not technically Japanese, Anachronox plays very much like a Japanese RPG. I haven't played it since it was new, but I liked it back then, at least. It's one of the entry tier games on the latest Humble Bundle [http://www.humblebundle.com] (along with Daikatana if you're morbidly curious).

No one has mentioned it yet, so I'll toss Paper Sorcerer out there. You explore the dungeons in an FPS style, but the battles are straight-up Dragon Warrior. The game is reasonably challenging, but not impossibly-so (barring needing to grind a few levels at the occasional boss). I know it's on Steam, but it might be available through other services.

I would also be remiss if I didn't mention Breath of Death VII and Cthulu Saves the World; both by the same developer, and both straight-up imitating the Dragon Warrior games right down to NES-themed graphics. They are both on Steam as a bundle for only a few bucks total (so a buck-fifty each).

I know none of those games are like Xenoblade Chronicles, but honestly, Xenoblade's combat is closer to an MMO than a jRPG.

I really liked The Last Remnant, but I could see it being a niche title.

The Last Remnant is the only "recent" game that jumps out as being available on PC because...its the only JRPG I own for PC.

Yeah, its doesn't put any emphasis on terrain tho. So it's simpler in some ways but the skill system is really addicting and quite rewarding. So it might not entirely scratch that SRPG itch, but if you have ever wondered what a fusion of traditional jRPG and sRPG would look like...well here you go. I dunno how pricey it will be on steam, but last i checked it was $20 on psn, so i can't imagine the steam price would be above that. Defiantly worth a look if it is well priced, and if not it will be on sale at some point :p
