Darker Than Black (Season1 at least),Ergo Proxy, Elfen Lied, Code Geass, Death Note and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya...

...but who doesn't particularly like anime that has the exaggerated expressions/style (like when characters grow giant when angry, or have the waterdrop on the back of their head when embarrassed etc.)

People kept recommending Bleach to me, but after the first episode I had absolutely no interest in continuing.

Does anybody have some suggestions?

EDIT: Response on page 2, post 58.

Serial Experiments Lain - headfuck... probably need to watch it twice to understand/appreciate it properly
Paranoia Agent - headfuck... again, though slightly more of the detective slant
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - had to be said... but seriously, this'll fit right into your tastes
Gunslinger Girl - though I'd probably recommend the manga more in this case...
Le Chevalier D'Eon - divides opinion, but quite a ride...

and for something milder:

Haibane Renmei - one of the most beautiful animes ever made (and I mean that in every sense of the word).

Neon Genesis Evangelion sounds good for you. It keeps Anime exaggerations to a bare minimum, like I can think of only 2 instances of the top of my head and they're like 8 episodes apart. Plus it's dark, got giant mechs beating the ever loving crap out of other giant stuff, and it's dark.

Like, really dark. Like "HOLY SHIT, THE FUCK AM I WATCHING?" dark.

I am not the same man I was when I went into it.

Calumon: He was happier then. : (

I don't watch a ton of anime, so I haven't got a lot to recommend.
However, Serial Experiments Lain is good, and so is Baccano!, so judging from those you listed, you should like these two.

EDIT: And Cowboy Bebop. How could I forget...?
EDIT 2.0: And Durarara. That's pretty good.

Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

The former is a sci-fi western with brilliant characters and brilliant soundtrack. There's not really any overarching plot, it's mainly a character piece and it does it damn well.

The latter is a cyberpunk institution. Very slick, very cool, very intelligent.

I used to think the same things. Seinen manga changed my mind though; I discovered a few that I fell in love with. Because I used to be like you, I feel like you might start of where I did:

Definitely:
-Cowboy Bebop
-Soil*
-Tough*
-Stardust Memories*
-Ghost in a Shell

Maybe:
-Desert Punk
-Full Metal Alchemist
-Vagabond*
-Parasyte*
-Boondocks
-Samurai Champloo
-Afro Samurai

Serial Experiments Lain is a bit of a mindfuck but good overall. Same with higurashi no naku koro ni although that is more bloody and slightly less weird.

Things do get better in the next two arcs, but it's mostly down hill after that even if you don't include fillers.I'd recommend watching more than one episode of any anime though before you make a decision. Anyway it sounds like you wont like similar shonen type anime like naruto and one piece so you should avoid those if they are mentioned if you can't stand bleach and exaggerated expressions/style.

Let's see...
Cowboy Bebop is pretty much loved by any anime fan, so I'd go with that for sure.
Wolf's Rain is in a similar boat, but is much darker than Bebop.
Fullmetal Alchemist is a good mix of the two in terms of tone and overarching plot.
Monster is VERY dark (though not quite as dark as Death Note, IMO), and is quite long, but is well worth watching.

Bakemonogatari sounds just right for you.
Then there's, Baccano, Durarara, Phi Brain and Ben-to from the top of my head.
Definitely No. 6 though.

Among those you list as your likes, Haruhi stands out as different than the rest.
So I'll recommend stuff more similar to Haruhi, in order to let you get some variation:

Hyouka is currently running and is a lot like Haruhi. It's great. The art is particularly beautiful. I recommend checking it out.

Clannad and Clannad after story will break your heart. I recommend checking it out if you want to know what it feels like to watch something that's actually touching. It's the only piece of media that's ever made me shed a tear. I didn't like touching stuff before Clannad, but it changed the way I feel about that kind of stuff.
It's a bit slow and Haruhi-ish in the beginning, mostly revolving around Tomoya Okazaki's daily life. Clannad has a little bit of feel, but after story will break you.

Both of them are animated by the same studio that made Haruhi. Clannad is slightly more stereotypically anime-esque than the other two, but I really really recommend watching it.

As for something that fits the rest of the anime on your list better:
Fullmetal alchemist: Brotherhood.

And Steins; gate.
Very good series.

No offense to you or anything, but in the interest of fairness I think the OP should know:

Phi brain and No. 6 are among the very few shows that I plain stopped watching because I thought they were too shitty.
Phi brain misses the entire point of making a series about puzzles, and No. 6 starts out with a promising setting and premise, but dumps it all in favour of yaoi pandering. All traces of the story that seemed to be promising are pushed aside to place focus on the sexual tension between the two main characters.

Seeing as how, from what I can tell, most (if not all) of the anime you listed has absolutely nothing to do with one another, I'll simply offer up my personal favorites:

Rurouni Kenshin (be sure to watch the OVA's too).

Bobobo-bobo-Bobobo (I doubt you'll like it, but like I said, I'm listing my favorites and that's certainly one of them).

TFS DBZ Abridged. Fan-Made parody of Dragon Ball Z....fucking hilarious for anyone who has even a general idea of the storyline. Can be found at teamfourstar.com

Cowboy Bebop, as others have mentioned.

Ghost in the Shell, as others have mentioned.

Paranoia Agent is a very fun watch. :3

YOU!
That was a while ago...

OT: Accel World, or Sword Art Online. Got recommended a few days ago.
It's really fantastic.

EDIT: Fairly unlike everything you listed though.
They're made by the same person! I love him XD.

Ok I'm gonna make some recommendations
Steins;Gate
C (the money and soul of possibility control)
Trigun (try the manga instead of the anime, it's much more interesting. The anime is decent)
Another
Phantom:Requiem for the Phantom
-this one is quite possibly my favorite anime. It's dark, it's gripping, it's got action. What else could you want?

If you wanna go mainsteam might I recommend:
Kateikyoushi Hitman Reborn
D. Gray Man
Full Metal Alchemist, Brotherhood

And I have to recommend the anime movie "5 centimeters per second" even though it's different than your posted series.

I say fair enough to both those points. I watched these shows awhile ago and I forgot about a lot of their flaws.
I'm just gonna edit my post and strike out Phi Brain but I still think No. 6 is pretty good, forced homoeroticism and all.

I also highly recomend this. I'm up to episode six and loving it.
