Phi brain and No. 6 are among the very few shows that I plain stopped watching because I thought they were too shitty.
Phi brain misses the entire point of making a series about puzzles, and No. 6 starts out with a promising setting and premise, but dumps it all in favour of yaoi pandering. All traces of the story that seemed to promising are pushed aside to place focus on the sexual tension between the two main characters.
Ahhh double post I'm so sorry but I just had to make a comment on this, because I cannot agree more. No. 6 started off AMAZING, but then they blew it by focusing on the BL aspect instead of the story. And phi brain is just....well the same idea. They focused on making it into a battle anime instead of a genuine puzzle anime.

Welcome to the NHK
It has silly points, but never over exaggerates expressions, and looks like the lives of recluse people in Japan.
Also, I'm pretty sure it's the only thing I own that has suicide themes.

But I'll join the votes for Ghost in the shell: S.A.C., Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Fullmetal Alchemist (The original series is darker. Brotherhood likes breaking mood with random humour, but is otherwise considered better)

Also, longshot show I like. Gundam 00 (That's two zeroes, but offically said as "Double Oh"). It's a mecha, but real robot so it's not like the mecha win out of the will to win. I think you may enjoy the commentary on the philosophy of people in war, and how it affects all sides, and the main characters.

Darker Than Black (Season1 at least),Ergo Proxy, Elfen Lied, Code Geass, Death Note and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya...

...but who doesn't particularly like anime that has the exaggerated expressions/style (like when characters grow giant when angry, or have the waterdrop on the back of their head when embarrassed etc.)

People kept recommending Bleach to me, but after the first episode I had absolutely no interest in continuing.

Does anybody have some suggestions?
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is probably THE anime that has impacted me the hardest, you will experience happiness, sadness and everything inbetween. It has some of the exaggerated anime things in it, but it kind of fits the tone.

YOU!
That was a while ago...

OT: Accel World, or Sword Art Online. Got recommended a few days ago.
It's really fantastic.

EDIT: Fairly unlike everything you listed though.
I don't think Sword Art Online is as dark as those.

OT: Baccano! is pretty dark, but it does have some comedic elements. Otherwise Afro Samurai is good, even if it is Western Animation more than anime.

This one gets a vote from me as well.
It's entertaining and psychologically interesting, fairly mature, breaks the mold a bit, etc.

I don't think I personally could have appreciated how touching it is without having watched Clannad first though.

Hmph. Everyone already mentioned Cowboy Bebop. I don't have much to go on then, do I?

...

Ooh! Ooh. Try Highschool of the Dead. It's got a decent story, and like some of the things you listed it's pretty dark with a smattering of lighthearted bits to keep it from getting suicidally depressing. One warning, though: only watch this one if you can ignore the ridiculously over-the-top fanservice. The inhumanly huge boobs never get to the point where they completely eclipse the plot, but it can get annoying after a while.

So you like darker anime? Aswell as the ones already posted

Texnolyze
Gilgamesh
Blade
Deadmam Wonderland if its as good as the manga
Gantz is worth watching although its kind cut short with its ending, but makes a good intro to the manga.

also I recommend you get into 90s and early 00s that was the hayday for the darker more mature stuff imo with less cheesy panty shots.

If you havn't already watched Akira, Ghost in the Shell 1&2, Venus Wars and Gilbli put them at the top of the list.

Less darker are:-

Redline is a recent anime movie, it does the oldstyle hand drawn animation instead of the cheaper computer art all anime use nowadays. Make sure you watch a HD uncompressed version, You can rent it on a 360 btw.

Also Time of Eve and The Last Exile (there are 2 series i'm thinking of the first) are pretty looking amines with good stories.

I also have a soft spot for studio Bones

I have never been more confused in all my life, and I once thought I could eat a pineapple with it's skin on.

Calumon: His teeth were red afterwards. >.<
Haven't seen/talked to you in a looooooooooooong while.
Like, LOOOOOONG.

So, just hi to both of you!
Hi!

I've been kinda on and off with my posting recently, for the past year, mostly for study purposes since it was a big year for study this year and I needed it, also because this year I've been playing non-stop catch up with all my games.

However the biggest reason for me not posting so much is Dark Souls, because that game was so fucking awesome I punched myself in the scrotum for not buying that son of a ***** earlier. That was back in february I bought it and was playing it all the way into June. That game was brilliant, in every single way, but did totally cut me off socially.

I'm not dead, I've just been lazy, is all.

Calumon: HE'S ALSO GETTING FAT!

Jack: WELL GEE, IF THERE WAS SOMETHING TO DO AROUND MY HOUSE IN THE ASS END OF NOWHERE THEN MAYBE I WOULD BE DOING STUFF!

Phantom Requiem of a Phantom. Reminded me a lot of Darker than black but I liked this more. Personally not a fan of DoB.
If you want other dark, and by dark I mean murder happy animes then Higurashi no naku koro ni and it's sequal Higurashi no naku joro ni kai are good. Deadman Wonderland wasn't terrible. Shame it ended.

Yea it's not dark at all, and unfortunately I believe it's going to devolve into a harem anime, based on the manga I've read. Hopefully I'm wrong :D

I really liked the anime, main character's screams were a little annoying, but past that it was good. Didn't read the manga tho, so I couldn't judge based on that.

Another reocmmendation: Fate/Zero, Fate/Stay Night
Stay Night was made first, Zero is a prequel, as far as I know.
They get you emotionally invested in each character and then they....I got so attached to them and then....Well I won't spoil anything but you get the point.

How is that spoilers? That's an opinion that may not even be true. I said might, not will. I don't even know for sure one way or the other. See for yourself what happens and make your own opinions :D. I don't think tentatively placing it in a genre is a spoiler(which some manga sites have done already), and it's still good mind you.

Monster if you're ready for something adult and Madoka Puella Magica if you're ready to have your gut wrenched again after enjoying Elfen Lied.

At first it may look like a cute little slice of life magical girl anime, but... I guess you'd have to make a contract with me to find out, right? ／人◕ ‿‿ ◕人＼

Also, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni.

Captcha: I want control. How appropriate.

Hellsing! I mean really, who doesn't love a psychotic master vampire kill all the other puny vampires eh?! :D

Mushishi. It's a very tranquil but mysterious anime. It's got a bunch of stories, all of them so humble and beautifully done that it's a treat to watch it.

Black Butler. Demon butler, homicidal kid. Woo, winner combo. It's a mystery/horrorish anime. Quite good and fun to watch as well.

Baccano. Lots of characters. A ton of 'em. And you'll love everyone of 'em. The story is solid and the atmosphere is alive. Do try that one.

Durarara!! Successor to the Baccano. Has its fair share of peoples. Lovely story, locale, characters. Nice mix.

Black Lagoon
if your going for a more realistic actiony show whithout much trace of chibisation(?) or moe then this is great

Angel beats!
i second as a good continuation to things like haruhi and i recommend to anyone if i get the chance

Claymore
may also be a good one for a dark fantasy slice'm'up

Birdy the mighty Decode
again an anime that i would recommend to anyone, has good action scenes and a more 'traditional' sci-fi aspect than most anime's but also contains some of the h school antics of shows such as haruhi

It has been scientifically proven* that it is impossible to ignore the fanservice in this show.

Now I don't mind me a bit of fanservice. In fact, thats probably the only reason I got Sekerei. Fuck knows it has nothing else to recommend it. But the fanservice in H.O.T.D is fairly unforgiving.

Back OT, seriously, if you have Darker than Black, why would you need any other anime? Thats the boy right there.

[sub]*not actually scientifically proven[/sub]

They've already been suggested but I found Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex fits your needs as well as Gunslinger girl. I re-watch GitS all the time, it's a very engaging show.

Well if you don't like the exaggerated style I guess any of the Key anime works well.
(Angel Beats!,Clannad,Air etc.)
Elfen Lied..That shit was fucked up man..Akira was very similar I hear.(basically the same story.)

If you like the "School Club" stuff like Haruhi then maybe Okami-san and her Seven Companions although it wasn't an amazing show and it was more of a Fantasy take(With the whole characters being based on fairy tale characters thing)then a Scifi like MoHS It also has your very Tsundere lead.(Okami even looks like grown up Taiga Aisaka)

Angel Beats! is also kinda "School Club" and Yuri is compared to Haruhi a lot. It is almost the perfect mix of MoHS's silliness and feel-good parts with Elfen Lied's deeper heart-wrenching tragedy.

Baccano & Durarara!! are great as far as characters go.
I know in Durarara!! Crispin Freeman does the voice for Shizuo in the english dub (He did Kyon in dubbed Haruhi and I think I have developed a man-crush on him comparable to Daystar and Nathan Fillion.)

TrevHead said:

Well, It wasn't as good and in the english dub guess who voices Ganta?
Fucking Greg Ayres!
I for one can not stand that guys voice in anything. I am a person who always prefers dubs to subs but in this case I had to go and watch it in subs because listening to this assholes raspy voice made me want to kill myself.(He is also my #1 complaint with Angel Beats!)
