Here's a couple of good sites that allow you to stream anime for free. They both have extensive libraries.

The first one makes you sign up for membership, but it's free, and they never spam your email or anything.

http://otaku-streamers.com/

http://www.gogoanime.com/

As for some of my favorites that I would recommend (in no particular order):

Welcome to the NHK
School Rumble
Hellsing
Hellsing Ultimate OVA (ongoing)
Full Metal Alchemist
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
Elfen Lied
Blood +
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumia
Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni
Eden of the East
Code Geass
Death Note
Ghost in the Shell
Black Lagoon
I think I've seen some episodes of Code Greass, is that the one where all the evil ppls are British, and some guy can hypnotise people with is eye, and theres some sort of megamech with some student guy who's British but actually not? Animes are very confusing you know that?

Another good anime is Mushishi.
It's kind of different but it is really entertaining and it is in English
if you can find a good download.

quoted for good taste!

I'll try to be different in my recommendations:

Lovely Complex: romantic comedy, can be mushy at times but is balanced out by good amounts of comedy

Honey and Clover: slice of life/ romantic comedy, if you need a change of pace and slow things down a bit

Tales of Agriculture/Moyashimon: comedy/ educational: in a similar vein with Yakitate! Japan except it involves agriculture/bacteria enlightening and entertaining at the same time!

Sword of the Stranger: movie/ historical/samurai, great art and animation, nice story that is palatable to western tastes(not as eccentric as your typical anime fare)

I would also recommend Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei and Bakemonogatari but you need more experience to fully enjoy them.

EDIT:

Almost forgot Tetsuwan Birdy Decode: action, crazy action is crazy nice animations too except for the last episode(studio ran out of money, try looking for the dvd version as they fixed it there)

In addition to what has been previously mentioned, if you want an idea of how wide anime's range is, check out Berserk, Moribito and the anime adaptation of Witchblade.

Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei is a good anime too, but the sense of humor is strange...
I enjoyed it though, but I agree, watch some different anime before this one, that way you can fully understand it.

Elfen Lied for those into violent inhuman girl battle royales.

Mai-Hime for certain.

His and Her Circumstances for romantic-ish types

Well if you'd like I created a thread a little while back and people have been posting a good amount of anime titles here is the link.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.236662-Suggest-an-anime

Another good suggestion is to go to http://www.animeseason.com and hitting the random button, I've found a few animes that are right up my alley because of it, good luck to you. =)

Ah right forgot to post some suggestions lol...

K-ON
Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Kaichoi Wa Maid-sama!

Those are all great suggestions. =)

Hellsing OVA(Hellsing Ultimate) is great.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is pretty good as well (if you can excuse the confusing plot at the end)
I would also recommend Karas: The Prophecy, as well as the sequel by Tatsunoko Productions. Has my alltime favorite opening to a movie.

To answer this question properly, we will need to know what genres you're into.
