I don't really play difficult games. Hell, I barely play games at all anymore, so I don't want to spend the couple of hours a week I do play being frustrated. The hardest game I ever managed to beat was Resident Evil 4 on professional. I know that'll probably get me laughed out of the place, but it's true...

That's a good screenshot representation, but if you could make a video of the section where you have to run ahead of the moving wall of spikes, that would probably be the best action representation. Or the part where you're on that moving platform going endlessly right towards the castle...

I did think of another game that had some nasty stuff - the dark portal levels and the mid-boss challenges on Disgaea 2. I mean, sure you can level all your characters to 9999, but they're still pretty nasty fights.

Oh, also the challenges on the Mercury PSP games. Nasty stuff.

I wanna be the Guy just isn't fun, but you may as well try it.

Megaman series.
DMC3
Ninja Gaiden
Ghosts n Goblins
Contra
STALKER
I think Deus Ex and System Shock 2 can be tricky if you play your cards right (or wrong).

Ikaruga. It's one of the hardest goddamn games I have ever played. I haven't beaten it once, I've died so many times, and it was the main cause of my swearing when I was in Grade 8.

Try DDR....with no legs.

I have to agree with the people who are saying STALKER I got my ass raped repeatedly by a couple of shitty Conscripts early on just holding a checkpoint it took me like a thousand tries till I got around it. Of course the bad part is you sometimes get cocky like I went into this lab with all this whacky shit going on so I felt pretty badass after defeating the monsters in there and walking out but I wasn't paying much attention when the Spetsnaz team that had fast roped into the compound put a bullet through my head as I rounded the corner.
Oh yeah. And the Anomolies can kick your ass sometimes too. Many are easy to see, but one type is nearly invisible and all you get is a brief warning as your 1 foot away from setting it off, and then a wooshing sound as it activates, and then you die. Ok, you don't die right away; it tosses you around helplessly for a bit, THEN kills you. If you're walking slowly these can usually be avoided, but god help you if you happen to be running. Also, backing up/strafing in confined quarters can cause you to step in one and die, while NOT backing up/strafing can cause you to die anyway as some bullets get too friendly with your face.
Ha thanks for reminding me about that especially when you are new to the game anomalies kick your fuckin' ass repeatedly and you just sit there scratching your head going what the hell. In fact I have a tale about when anomalies fuck you over it was early in the game and I only had a pistol I was doing some exploring when a pack of those fuckin' wild dogs started chasing me so I was like oh shit and started to leg it. Well I wasn't paying much attention since I was in a panic and just when I thought I was home free heading to a little village that some friendly STALKERs had set up in boom I go flying high in the air and died because I hit a damn anomaly. Not hard to say I wasn't very amused.

The Mega Man Zero series on Hard mode. Then again, I've only played MMZ3. It's also much more fun than the original series, especially because of the sweet boss fights that MMZ has. However, if you want a really hardass boss fight, go with Mega Man 7. The rest of the game is about average difficulty for a Mega Man game (by comparison, 9 is much harder than the average Mega Man game), but the final boss... oh... man. It took me at least 100 tries to beat him (NOT exaggerating)....unless you take the easy way out and use special weapons and healing items.

Contra 3 has kickass blast-the-shit-out-of-everything action. It's more combat-oriented than Mega Man's platforming style. You can shoot in 8 directions, and you get weapons from powerups that appear frequently, as opposed to Mega Man's "steal boss weapons" system. Plus there's the added difficulty of dying in one hit.

I also like Contra 3's "You're getting better! Now face a REAL challenge" (paraphrased) message that you get when you beat the game on Normal difficulty, only to be taken back to the beginning of the game on Hard.

If you want platforming and/or boss fights, go with Mega Man. If you want constant blast-the-shit-out-of-everything action, go with Contra.

DMC3 and Viewtiful Joe? Piss off they are easy
I see you are from the UK. The "normal" US difficulty is equivalent to "hard" in the PAL version due to a localization fuck up.

Viewtiful Joe is mostly straightforward except for the boss rush culminating in Fire Leo, which I found to be impossible.
Yeah maybe for VJ but not for DMC.
and let's not forget European Extreme Mode on MGS, something the Americans can't handle.
