Ok, to end the flamewar between WoW and gw here.

GW is NOT an MMO this has been STATED BY ARENANET (the creators) gw is a CORPG similar to an mmo but without persisent areas.
lol the two sides of the "flame war" have reconciled... but that post might just reignite it.

and on topic, i would recomend city of heroes if you like character customization although the game seems to be dying slowly and the graphics are somewhat dated, however the game world is very big and expansive, and relatively story driven in some cases. champions online seems to be a good replacement but as a previous poster pointed out it is still buggy as hell and not that rich on content, if you disregard the massive amount of customization, even your arch nemesis can be customized.

basically i would recommend you find an mmo that has some sort of story relevance, games like wow just seem like endless grinding to me, then again if you like that sort of thing i suggest unliking it :p

So I'm new to online gaming and my friends pointed me in the diretion of some MMORPG's, namely Shaiya and Final Fantasy. After trawling through the internet and looking at different MMORPG reviews I came to one conclusion: who better to ask than gamers?
So if you wouldn't mind, which MMORPG would you recommend and why?
WoW...don't bother with Guild Wars. It's hardly an MMO.
IT'S HARDLY AN MMO??!! WHAT THE F*** IS WRONG WITH YOU? GUILD WARS IS AS MUCH AN MMO AS ANY OTHER!
You sir are a twat Guild Wars is a great MMO and if you don't like that is your opinion and so I would recommend GUILD WARS.
Yes, it is my opinion. So don't you fucking flame me for it, twat. Quoting fail anyway, if you wanted me to get notified you should have actually quoted my post. Lucky for you I was skimming through. I've played Guild Wars, and compared to WoW it's demonstrably less of an MMO.
Em I'd like you to elaborate a bit on how it is less of an MMO and don't leave a giant hunk of flame bait and expect no reaction all i said was you were a twat and you were for being so opinionated that you had to add in that little extra bit.
Flame bait? Hardly. Maybe to those self-righteous people who can't stand it if others dare not to like the same game as they do, such as yourself. I wasn't 'being so opinionated', I merely stated it was hardly an MMO, which compared to WoW is true. In Guild Wars you can't even encounter other people in the open world unless you already find them in a settlement and group up with them. That, and it's really not that big, especially if you only have one of the several different games. You'll have to point out that 'little extra bit' because all I saw was my recommendation and the reason.
The "little bit extra" would be the bit about Guild Wars which unless you are an internet ostrich you should know that there is a lot of tension between Guild Wars and WoW gamers.
So yes it was flame bait. Yes you may not meet random people outside of towns but Guild Wars requires more skill to play in learning how to use builds which is something WoW doesn't have to same extent.
An internet...ostrich? Yeah, I do spend enough time here to know about GW and WoW tension, which honestly is pathetic because they're both great games in their own rights. Ok, I can see you want this to be a calm, civilised discussion. Right: I'm not saying GW isn't deserving of being called an MMO, just that when you consider the multiplayer aspects to be slightly lacking compared to WoW, or Everquest or whatever, it pales in the whole 'Massively multiplayer' aspect. But as you've rightly said, it does earn its money and then some in the strategy and tactics required. Seem fair?
Yes that seems fair I just got the impression you were dismissing the game for no good reason which I hate people doing regardless of whether I think the game is good or not.
Oh god tell me about it, I hate it when people condemn MMOs before even trying one.
Yes I know what you mean I just wish people could get along a bit more I don't understand why people judge a game because of second hand opinion especialy if it is from TV or South Park.

I dig me some Maple Story. People hate on Maple Story for some reason, and I don't know why. It's very simple to play and the quests are like just any other MMORPG.

MMO's... I probably shouldn't even be here. In my case, most of them either cost a monthly fee to play, usually with an attached software you need to buy, or else require you to download a plugin on your computer that inevitably fails, or makes the game lag like hell.

Being a cheap bastard who doesn't want computer viruses and worthless crap on his desktop, this leaves open a VERY thin selection of online MMOs for me to play. The best ones I've found so far are Dead Frontier, a zombie-apocalypse MMO, Nodiatis, generic fantasy MMO, and to a lesser extent, Kingdom of Loathing, a sort of parody MMO.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
I stumbled across Kingdom of Loathing a while ago, must be a couple of years ago by now. A few times since I've tried to find it, but could never remember the name, or any way I might 'stumble across it' again.

Anyway, on topic, Runes of Magic is a VERY good game. WoW-clone it may be, but it's one of the best out there, and it's free to play. It also knocked WoW off the top spot for MMOs when it brought out a disc in Germany (I think).
And from other reviews I've read/seen about Runes of Magic, I often see them saying how it may seem to be a clone of WoW, but in many aspects it goes so far as to exceed WoW.

Be hardcore and play eve-online

quoted for truth.

edit: and to the guy who said that he doesnt like spreadsheets, I'm guessing you just watched the zero punctuation review, or at most tried the 14 day trial. If you get into the PvP side of things it is imo the most complicated and intricate MMO around.

OK, I see the general populus suggests WoW as expected. I have looked into it and it does look good but for the time being I'm going to stay away from WoW because everyone says it's so good. Sounds stupid and rebellious I know but it's not meant that way.
You should have a go at it, i believe everybody should and its not as addictive for everyone, i played it from september until jan last year and now my character is sittin waitin on mr to reactivate.

If you do play it, make sure you find a highly populated server because i didn't and it drew me away from the game(i couldn't be arsed paying to 20 euro to transfer character).

Do what I did and take a tour- all the established MMOs have free trials. I was supprized by which ones I enjoyed the most and which ones were not fun to me.

Try them all, have your cake and eat it too.

Personally, I couldn't get into WoW. I'm really enjoying Aion though, I think you should try it out.

WoW is good, except for the fact that it's like 100 quid a year?

I'd go for Guild Wars 2 when it comes out.

Or just play free ones, some of them are very good.

I downloaded it once on my laptop & once on my home computer. My laptop was broken for two weeks due to an "unknown virus" and my home computer was suddenly a lot slower after installing.

Coincidence? (the computers were fine before)

Uh... I've been playing Maple Story for like 3 years and never had that problem. I guess it was a coincidence.

Runes of Magic is a nice play if you don't want to pay (or wish to choose when to pay), but I found it hard to play after a few hours at a time. It's got nice character customisation (you can have a slightly animé look, or you can be more "traditional" with it), and the gameplay is there.

Age of Conan, for me, had an amazing community, but the game just lost my interest quickly. There were still bugs, and I found the day/night system a bit annoying.

Guild Wars? Nah, sorry. Confusing, poor graphics (compared to more recent/more "expensive" MMOs), and no sense of multiplayer outside of cities.

LotRO? Yes, nice game. But as was said before, it descends to very basic/very simple questing very quickly, and it's also quite a daunting game. I do miss my characters, ofc, as visually one of them was very nice. I might pick up the 30 day version just to give it an unrestricted spin. The community is receptive, and the game world is well established. You have to remember that it primarily takes after the books, not the film. Places will look different, as will characters.

WoW? Unless you can honestly put the time in, I'd say no. WoW's one of those games, for me, where if you slip up, it consumes your life. You try to quit, but 3 days later you're installing it again because you accidentally came across info on the new patch coming in 2 months, or the next expansion (I bet Cataclysm has done this for a lot of players who quit). The community is often piss-poor (see MMO Champion for details), the graphics aren't amazing, but once you find yourself a guild or a channel to hang out in, you just enjoy the game a thousand times more. It's simple to get a grip of the basics, but to master some classes can be quite hard.

Tried D&DO, RF Online, Archlord, FFXI (rubbish!) and some others. LotRO, RoM and WoW are the only ones I'd consider playing. Wouldn't mind trying WAR though.

EVE online. Visually the prettiest game out there, the gameplay is deeper than the Mariana trench, and it has LAAAAZZZOOOORRZZZ!
