I have a sneaking suspicion that Rockstar actually modeled John Marston after Josh Brolin in No Country For Old Men.

Westerns died for a reason.
When did they die? Because honestly, with the success of the Young Gun movies, you would have thought that they still have some relevance in the entertainment industry.

Personally, I'm not sure about making a movie off of Red Dead Redemption. Considering that the best part of it all to me was the Scenery and the setting. It really did feel like a Western game. That's not to say that it won't be good.
It died in the 70's or a little before then. Sure the occasional western still gets made bu the genre as a whole is long gone. You shouldn't bother making more unless there's a good reason for it to exist.
Pirate movies were the same until PotC came along and became a box office hit. There's always the chance.

Although I'm uncertain if I like this news. Firstly it's a game turned into a film which is almost every time leading to an awful product and secondly the game mostly lived through playing with all the Wild West stereotypes and references to classic films... I really doubt the writers could reproduce that accurately.

I'd rather not see a movie about the story of the game, perhaps (Counter mentioned this already) Marston's life as an outlaw. Brad Pitt did do well as Jesse James in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward (I forgot his name)

Can't we just let a great game be a great game and call it a fucking day?

...Please?
Agreed.
Westerns haven't been prominant for some time. The last great ones I can think of are Tombstone and 3:10 to Yuma. There is no reason to make this into a movie. It was just a great game let's leave it that way.

If Brad Pitt plays John Marston it will be the biggest acting mistake ever.

There is no possible way he could pull off Marston's personality.

But Read Dead has made them slightly cooler again also for a good reason.

However I do agree with you, I doubt this would draw much attention from people outside of RDR enlightenment.

Well the story from Red Dead Redemption is good enough for a movie but brad pit doesn't have the beat up yet badass look Jhon Marston has.

I do like Brad Pitt as an actor and I do reckon he can do an awesome cowboy (i.e The Assassination of Jesse James) but he just doesn't fit into John Marston's shoes.
I reckon Josh Brollin would be an awesome choice, as he practically was a cowboy in No Country for Old Men.
I'm hoping for Steve Buscemi to play Seth Briars! I know he doesn't really look like him, but goddamnit he could pull it off! XD

I think as long as people keep looking at Cowboys as a symbol of rugged freedom from a time when the land wasn't tame and when technology didn't give us the benefits we have today, westerns will not die. It's the cowboy stereotypes that are keeping Westerns alive and as long as that keeps appealing to people, then it won't go away.
But they have died. In movie form at least. Western films are gone. People have attempted to bring them back but it's always failed. The imagery is around sure but it's still gone. And as I said they died for a reason.

This is a game based on the entire breadth of cinema Westerns. You'd be making a film based on a game based on films. BAD idea.

I reckon if I has the power of control over the production, well naturally I'd cancel it, since they're gonna fuck it up anyway, but if I wasn't allowed to, I'd break the story up into three films, with the being;
1. The start of the game until they assault Fort Mercer.
2. Going to Mexico until he goes to West Elizabeth.
3. The last third of the game.

I reckon if they got a preper cast of actors and a director who wasn't so far up his ass he could see the back of his head, then I could have a shot. I won't tho, since hollywood will totally fuck it up.

I agree, they have died in a sense. The only way they exist now is in the form of contemporary Westerns like No Country for Old Men and Gran Torino, which have the same structure but a different setting.

But wait! They're not dead! Check THIS out! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0409847/

is the reason that Clint Eastwood is to old to be a baddass cowboy?
No Gran Torino showed us Clint is never too old to be badass.

They died becasue the genre had no place left to go. It's been deconstructed, reconstructed and parodied dozens of times.

The movie adaptation of Prince of Persia proved to me that even talented actors and filmmakers cannot make a good videogame movie, so I want to see the thought of a RDR movie (as well as all other videogame to movie adaptations) to just disappear. Fast.

I personally don't think Brad Pitt could do John Marston justice but i don't know who could maybe Josh Brolin.
If a RDR movie must get made, I agree with you on Josh Brolin. When I was playing the game I was constantly reminded of him as John Marston. It still wouldn't interest me enough to watch it though.
I also agree with Josh Brolin as Marston. I find this an acceptable choice.

I'm having a hard time thinking of other actors, but I do want Ron Pearlman to play Dutch, and George Lopez to play Reyes.

And if they were going to pursue a single side mission to coinside with the story, it should be the "I Know You" missions, with Clint Eastwood as the Stange Man.
