I was a diehard fan of the first game (not so much of the second), so I had high expectations...

...and then it goes and completely reinvents itself. I would've been satisfied with a retread of the first game's gameplay, but they've twisted it around, turned it on its head, and made it superb.

Got this game through Gamefly. Pretty good so far, beat Parker district, into Dust. Really enjoying the destructibility, but not enjoying the atmosphere or "story" too much.
Pretty much the same here. Although im fine with the story. I mean, you dont need a good story when you have this much destructibility.

I love how if you crash a crash, into say, a wall, the wall just gets a great big expensive hole that the taxpayers gotta deal with while I drive away listening loudly to metallica and occasionally jumping out to throw an explosive charge at an edf Building.

I pretty much do this all day until the EDF lose the control of a zone. Im almost in eos, close to finishing dust.

I was disappointed with the singleplayer. It's fun for a bit, but the destructability gets old, and there's really not much else to do with it.

Please discus this game, I want to know what you lot think of it.
I definitely plan on renting it, maybe buying it.

Have you tried Mercenaries 2 or Saints Row 2?
One reminds me more of RFG and the other was made by the same people. Rent them; I'm curious to see which one you think is better.

The destruction is unmacthed by any game and is criminal that no other games have geo mod.

I also think that the story is good and that every one should stop complaining not everyone can write something = Half-Life2 or COD4

And so what if the vehicles flip over you can flip them right back over and there are hundreds of them everywhere

I can't wait for THe zero puncuation of this;)

I beat it two days ago. It is way to short, only 22 missions in length, but all the side objectives and hidden radio tags kinda makes up for that. The game reminds me more of the first mercenaries rather than GTA. You can blow up anything you want with anything you want, only red faction has taken it farther. I haven't played the first two red factions, but after hearing about them for the past couple of weeks I would really like to get my hands on them. To sum up, the game is at least worth a rental.

In general I have issues with games that include such heavy Communist undertones.

I won't go on a huge rant about it, but I will say that Communism is a system that sounds great on the surface but tends not to pan out very well in the long run. It's simply seductive to people who are at the bottom of a non-communist system. Various communist revolutions in places like Russia and China for "the workers" ended with those same supporters at the bottom and an even more corrupt and messed up regime in charge, whose first order of business was to do whatever it took to prevent the same things from happening to them (terrors behind the Iron Curtain, and China's current anti-democracy crackdowns).

I understand the theme of striking against a corperation for the benefit of the people, making a strong anti-capitolist, pro-communist sentiment. I can even understand how things make sense in the context of the game. But the way it goes about these things doesn't really show the true face of communism and where it ends up.

I enjoy Saint's Row (and understand some of the connections), but in general "Red Faction" is a game I generally can't condone, and honestly I'm pretty open minded to political themes, even those I disagree with (like with say Bioshock, or the satirical roguelike "Liberal Crime Squad").

I can see your point, I prefer my games not to get into political agendas.

I do think however that really the communist undertones are mainly just to do with the colour scheme (which is red anyway because it's on Mars) and a few of the images. I think whatever the political agenda of the Red Faction is, it is not discussed at great length anywhere in the game.

The idea of an oppressed people fighting back against the oppressors is hardly exclusive to communists and thier beliefs.

If you enjoy open world sandbox titles and smashing skyscrapers to bits then don't give this game a miss due to the political context as it is barely there and you'd be missing out on a great fun game!

I'm on the final mission at the moment and it's tough, the one mission in the game I found truly taxing was the Guns of Tharsis when you have to blow up the three power cells.

Well I have Prototype but I haven't played it yet. In case its horrible, I'm going to trade it in for Red Faction since I played the demo and loved it. Destroying a wall with a sledgehammer is the most satisfying thing I've done in a video game in ages.

Probably one of the best things I've ever put money into.
Couldn't agree more... endless replay value due to the awesome smashing of EVERYTHING.

Also I dunno why people are complaining about the graphics being bland in some reviews I've read, anyone who has gotten to the end of the game will have seen the absolutely stunning locations that are unlocked towards the finale.

I loved the old Red Factions but this is pure gold for me. A fantastic buy. My only problem is now I wont have money for Prototype :(
After playing both games, I can safely say you are better off with buying RF: G and renting prototype. Heck, RF:G may spoil you a little.

Yep, it's my game of the year so far.

Just finished it... the last mission was awesome, pretty tough but rewarding once I finally beat it. And man what an ending! Epic in the proper sense of the word.

There is just so much good about this game, I urge anyone with an old school sense of fun and challenge to give it a try.
