Just like the first Modern Warfare changed everything (for better or worse) for multiplayer military shooters with killstreak rewards, levels, and perks, Red Orchestra 2 (ROHOS) is going to set the new standard for military FPS games. Some will just look at a few screenshots and dismiss it as "World War II shooter Number 198372", but there is so much underneath the surface.

Features in ROHOS that I predict will be FPS standards in the next few years:

1) Ability to aim weapons independent of the movement camera, allowing you to shoot targets onscreen without moving your whole body to place the target in the center of the screen
2) Multiplayer campaigns where teams chose to attack particular maps, and the results of each map round affect subsequent rounds
3) Weapons that interact with the environment in first person, meaning you will be able to rest LMGs on ledges and longer guns like rifles will get stuck on doors frames and other objects, meaning players cannot just sit by a window and strafe back and forth while aiming
4) First-person sticky cover system
5) First-person blindfire over the top and around the sides of cover
6) Vehicles with over a dozen destroyable parts, instead of just overall HP like in Battlefield
7) When switching positions in a vehicle, the character crawls through the cabin in first-person
8) Scope system designed to completely eliminate quick scoping
9) Team morale system that affects tickets and capturing of objectives
10) Maps that scale according to the number of players playing

I'm sure there's even more that I forgot or that haven't been revealed yet. Can't wait for Q3 2011!!!

Hmm, watching this brings back memories of playing the original Red Orchestra.

I like the sound of all of these apparent innovations, but there is the potential for it to bite off more than they can chew and thus release a game unfinished or plagued with bugs. Moreover, while all of these things make for great gameplay, they don't make for popularity. The reason MW2 has become so popular is that levels, killstreaks et al give players something tangible to boast about and put everyone else down as 'noobs' in the kind of slagfests that online shooters usually degenerate into.

But, if that means that only mature people will play RO2, that can only be a good thing.

Although PC Gamer called RO2 the "Black Ops killer", I don't really see them as completely competing with Call of Duty. The way I look at, Tripwire seems to be releasing a game that compromises between the extreme realism of Operation Flashpoint and ArmA with the playability and intense action of Call of Duty and Battlefield

PC elitist much. I know its blunt but seriously?

Can't believe I completely forgot about Red Orchestra 2. Although I still want Battlefield 3 more than this.

To be honest, it doesn't interest me at all. The only feature listed that made me "huh" was the team morale system and the destroyable parts.

It's because of marketing and because it's so easy to play a retarder 6 year old can dominate it.
Wait, are you serious? The "new" features in this game make it look like Call of Duty mixed with Killzone 3 on Move.

Wow. I've seen some of these features before in games, like 1, 7, and 4. But damn, scaling maps based on team size? That actually is something that could revolutionize multiplayer online play. I don't know how team morale would work accurately though...

But 3? Weapons physically interacting with an enviroment? Awesome. No more run and gun nutjobs inside buildings.

Ooh, I really like the sound of the new gun mechanics. Though I don't think they'll catch on quite as fast as you say they will.

And to be honest I wish they were making a game with an original premise. I am so tired of World War II games. Almost seems like a waste of innovation.

Realistic FPS, yes. All FPS, no. I like Red Orchestra, but at the same time, I like Doom and Duke Nukem. Some shooters can be realistic and like this, while others can be over the top unrealistic and fun...

Agreed. Arena-style shooters like Halo, UT, Quake, and the upcoming Bulletstorm have their place and I have a lot of fun memories playing some of those games. RO's new features don't really blend with that style of gameplay

Been waiting for this for years.
There is only one server I can get decent ping on and has people actually playing in RO/DH.

Okay. Which of these new gameplay mechanics would be impossible on a console, precisely?

You're most likely right that it is very possible from a hardware standpoint, although at the same time, a console controller has far less versatility compared to keyboard and mouse. Either way, let's not turn this thread into a PC vs. consoles debate. RO2 is only being released for PC and is not even trying to compete with console titles

I know. I wasn't really trying to start a comparison, it just annoys me when people talk about console gaming like it's a physical entity that has somehow corrupted people's minds. Especially when the basic argument is something as ridiculous 'innovation is impossible on consoles because there are two popular series on them that I don't like'.

I'm actually looking foreward to this, and this is coming from someone who play's CoD. Still, that weapons getting stuck on things will be a huge hassle if they don't include a lower weapon option that prevents firing without readying it, but prevent it from getting stuck, and I'm not sold on the weapon isn't always centered. The only way I can think to include that are having your character only turn when you reach the screen edge, which is one of the main thing motion controls get complaints for, or adding a second mouse for moving arms exclusively, which would really complicate the controls.

While I don't consider many of those necessarily bad, there's also a lot of stuff that's not necessarily stuff that all shooters should have. Sticky cover and weapon collision might work great for some particular game or games, but I can't see how it would automatically be great for shooters in general.

There are solid design reasons to not include many of those in a particular shooter depending on what that shooter is trying to do and be.

Basically, cool, and I hope the game succeeds and uses those features well, but I very much doubt that they'll all become genre standards.

I love realistic games for some reason and this one looks like another one to add to my games list
