Well, some of the grandest pieces of orchestral music I know are the following (Omitting previously mentioned pieces):
Bedrich Smetana - Má Vlast - Vlatva ( http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=9j8857i4ZTI , http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=RcM84dhFfw8 )
Charles Camille Saint-Saëns - Danse Macabre ( http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=rZ_w_ZLmqAU )
Igor Stravinsky - The Firebird Suite - Infernal Dance ( http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=H4S64H4HXTw&feature=related )
Carl Orff - Camina Burana - O Fortuna (Everybody's heard this one http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=lF7_PhB9coo )
The only one I haven't heard there was Danse Macabre. And I certainly enjoyed the first one and Stravinsky's peice.

If you want something greater then Jupiter, it depends on what attracted you to Jupiter. If you like drama, try the requiem from Verdi, the part displaying the return of god and Jesus.

Wicked, I actually knew all those pieces :) and I like em all too. Maybe we got the same taste.

Another recommended is the requiem of Faure. Best requiem ever in my book because it isn't a drama queen.

For those (to whom I believe are few) who genuinely enjoy classical peices, I'd just like to say I love classical music beyond any onther genre. In my opinion a Rap song is a repetitive peice of music with somebody bumbling though slapstick poetry or just simply advetising violence, drugs or other immoral behavior.
Classical peices are magnificent peices of art that tell a story and emulate emotions and pictures. Just think of any Orchestral peice: the composor had to be nothing short of a genuis just to write it! Can you envision in your head writing notes for 60 people at once?

Oh, and for those who are condusive to my beliefs, does anyone know a grander peice than Gustav Holst's "Jupiter" from the planets suite?

In my opinion 'Pictures at an Exhibition' by Mussorgsky comes pretty close.
What's your take on classical music?
Hay now, I enjoy good classical music as well but I also enjoy other genres as well. Yeah most rap sucks but there is one exception. EminEm has at least 5 great songs. (Sing For the Moment, Coming Out Of--- sorry, CLEANING Out My Closet, etc. etc.)

Right. On to classical music. Everyone already knows about Mozart, Beethoven and such so I'm going to talk about more modern classics.

1) The Heart Asks Pleasure First - Micheal Nyman - from the movie "The Piano"

2) Cohen's Masterpiece (piano) and "Welcome to Rapture" - Gary Schyman - lets see if you can guess where it's from.

3)Requiem For a Dream and Deat is the Road to Awe - Clint Mansell - Requiem For a Dream and The Fountain.

There's more but I just want to see if anyone else knows these songs. Please tell me.

I love all classical music, first got into it when I saw the first Fantasia. My all time favorites would be:

Mussorgsky - A Night on Bald Mountain (Scary)
Beethovan - Moonlight Sonata
Grieg - Morning, from 'Peer Gynt'
Vivaldi - The Four Seasons - Spring
Vivaldi - Flute Concerto in G minor 'La Notte'

Rap is proof enough to me that there are no more geniuses out there!

I don't get how people went for rap when it's just clearly meaningless... rhyming to a beat.

Long after every song that's popular right now is gone and forgotten, Moonlight Sonata will still be played and remembered. Same with many other classical and orchestral scores of the time.

Hell, half the popular songs now are just jazzed up versions of a clasical song with singing slapped over the top and various computer effects added to try and hide they're really just singing over a song you've already heard a million times before.

That's not to say great stuff isn't being made now of all genres though, but everyone should learn to appreciate classics at the very least I say!

No mention of Elgar yet, personally I love a little pomp and circumstance, get the flags waving!

But I refuse to say I like this sort of music and not that sort, instead I judge each song on its own merits regardless of genre and try not to come to it with any pre conceived ideas or judgements about what I do and don't like.

Oh and somebody slandered RnB, please do not confuse what is currently labelled as RnB with actual Rhythm and Blues which is a different kettle of fish all together.

Although if i had to pick a favourite genre of music it would be either a Jazz Jam session or a Turntablist like Krafty Kuts, Scratch Perverts, DJ Shadow, DJ Vadim, DJ Yoda, I really like music when it's quite freeform and spontaneous.

I'm a classical musician. It's actually what I do. Seriously. In two years I'll have a shiny bachelor's degree from Oberlin, in four years I'll have a shiny master's degree from somewhere and in ten years I'll hopefully have an orchestra job.

I can't tell you guys how amazing it is that in this small segment of the population there are so many people who love classical music. As far as preferences go, I urge all of you to listen to everything you can get your grubby mitts on. I don't want to get into recommendation much, but in response to the couple of people who have talked about your love for emotional music, you'd probably enjoy Mahler a lot. And Bach.

You guys can ask me anything, though, if you want to know more about this stuff from someone who's devoted their life to it.

It's funny how when people want to make their music sound great they compare it to how much they think rap sucks.

Has anyone else noticed this? I mean. "Sure Avril lavigne's 'Girlfriend' was a total rip of of... HEY LISTEN TO THAT CRAP IT'S RAP OMGF AT LEAST IT ISN'T THAT!"

I enjoy classical music, just don't expect me to rattle of a list of concertos and sonatas that I adore. I'm familiar with the big guys in that I enjoy Bach's violin pieces, Mozart's woodwind and string pieces, the nine Beethoven symphonies, Holst's orchestral suites, Brahm's Piano concertos, Vivaldi's seasons and pieces by Handel and Hayden. It's just that in comparison to some of my friends, my knowledge is very limited. I enjoy the aesthetic of it in that I can appreciate the depth, form and complexity and how excellent the end product sounds. It's just that I only listen to classical music in ideal circumstances. I'm a bit of an audiophile that way.

Comparing Classical to any other genre, be it punk or rap or even jazz, is asinine. You can debate which Beethoven symphony is the greatest, just don't throw a Kanye West song into that debate lest you want a bounty on your head. Some people like rap, some people like rock, some like classical, and I'm particularly fond of bluegrass. Life becomes a lot simpler when you keep your cultural smugness to yourself and to people who can tolerate or appreciate it.

I'm a classical pianist, and I like music that I can play, so most of my favorites are either for solo piano or are piano concertos.

I'm a great fan of Rachmaninov. His preludes and etudes are fairly sublime. The piano concertos no. 2 and 3 are great pieces, I played the second one last year. As far as piano concertos go, I like Grieg, Schumann, Brahms, Shostakovich, the aforementioned Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven.

Ravel's music is also some of my favorite. Gaspard de la Nuit and J'eux Deau are two of my favorite pieces, both to play and to listen to. Pretty good concerto, as well.

To find a grander piece than Jupiter, you need go no further than Mars. However, I'd put my vote in for the 18th variation of Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini (you know, the famous one) for its seat among the grandest pieces.

I'm a Philip Glass man, myself, though he's more of a contemporary classical composer.

His Edtude No.1 is a classic. minimalistic, yet surprising at every tempo change
Yay! I'm not the only one! I like his operas. I converted a friend to modern symphonic music with a mix tape (it was tape back then) called, "I went to the Wichita Sutra Vortex and all I got was this lousy mix tape."

I love classical music from the Impressionists forward. 20th Century represent! Start with Debussy and roll clear on through to Glass and I'm a happy girl. I'm the reverse of most people who don't like anything written after 1863 or some such. Prokofiev is a particular favorite, Copeland, Gorecki. Stravinsky makes me want to hop all around the room. I need to check out Messiaen, too.

I'm pretty sure that's Beethoven. I like it too. It always makes me think of "Clockwork Orange."

Must go to bed, but fore I do, had to post in this thread. When it comes to good classical music, two words: Nigel fuckin Kennedy. Greatest violinist evar. Anything and everything he plays is the music of gods. His rendition of Monti's Czardas, his interpretation of Hendrix (yeah, you heard right), the way he plays Meditation from Thais.....brilliant.

Bleh. I don't *hate* Classical music. I just really, really can't stand it anymore. My parents and my teachers played nothing but Classical (or so it seems) until I was 10 or so. I've heard so much Classical that I am sick of it. SICK OF IT.

Monty Python says it all, could easily be the most underappreciated composer in history.

In all seriousness though I'm a huge fan of Chopin and Rachmaninov and the classic classics of course, Beethoven and Motzart (can't gaurantee correct spelling on any of that). I think my favorite peice of classical music ever is the full orchestral version of Ode to Joy. I know Ode to Joy is the one everyone has heard but when you hear it in full symphony its just ... unparalleled.

I honestly can't understand why some people dislike classical music (though, on the other hand, I also listen to techno so I might just be on the irritating music fringe). It's really great stuff.
