"I can do what I want as long as I say God told me to do it!"
- Religious extremist

I'm in a bit of a pickle. In my high school, we are allowed to download and play games, borrow comics (Japanese and American alike) from the library, and do whatever during free time. It rocks, somewhat. But out of the blue (or maybe there was a build up I'm not sure), a parent decided that she should throw her beliefs all over the school. She's trying to get all the comics out of the library because of references to Satanism and evil and ooh scary stuff, and delete all the games (a lot of computers have steam for gaming during free breaks. you need a special pass though) because guns were created by the devil or something.

Now, i'm all for freedom of speech or the right to believe anything you want, but when you think that God told you himself that you should save this school for the evils of entertainment (or should I say enterTAINTment) then you've got to be a little loony. And yes, folks, she did say that. Here are some quotes from her letter the teacher sent out, its part of a 'parents speak' section in the newsletter:

"Kids these days are being controlled by the evil that is contained within the manga and comics. I do not allow my son(Poor guy) to partake in these activities because they take time away from what is truly important - the love of God. Every day I come to pick up my son I see the children absorbed in killing people and reading about the devil. I want to do what I can to help these kids realize the waste of their soul. Together we can overcome this addiction (Apparently to her an addiction is something you somewhat enjoy and have done more than once).

EDIT: The son is fine he's a perfectly cool dude. He doesn't let his mother control him but he is religious. He plays games and reads just like the rest of us.

Also she doesn't seem to be doing anything else but the word has gotten around the whole school about the 'lady who wants to ban video games'. So far it seems like a myth and the teachers themselves are expressing their disbelief.

Ignore her. All what she is to your school is another bible-wanking fucknugget who's clamoring for attention. Eventually, she'll fuck off.

Argument: "I have the right to religion"

Rebuttal: "And we have the right to not have it forced on us"

1. She has no right, she's forcing her beliefs onto you. Just another case of self-important religious people, trying to be all-mighty and saint-like by abolishing something they consider unholy instead of respecting someone's else beliefs. If this happened at my school, I'd just say "You're intruding on my beliefs".
2. Everyone should keep their religion to themselves, not force them onto someone.
3. No. If you enjoy it, it's not a waste. As long as it's taken in moderation.
4. They have no proof, and they're letting their beliefs go out over their real life and other people. How many soldiers haven't said "I was sent by God" and goes out to kill people. It's stupid.

If the school's following along with this parents ideas, you have every right to sue them, and you should. If you're serious, contact the ACLU about this whole thing (if you're in the states of course)

This only applies if you go to public school though

Tell her that it is not up to her to decide whether some kids want to read comicbooks or play video games, regardless of their content, and God certainly haven't told anyone to try and remove these things from anywhere. In fact God doesn't hand out "divine right" for anyone to impose their beliefs on anyone else...

Is this stuff already starting to be taken away or is she still just ranting?

If it's the latter I think that the people who run the school will be able to see through her bullshit.

Is that seriously an exact quote?

Also, and be honest: Did you just come and ask this question to the Escapist because you knew that most most of the community is liberal and totally against religious extremists?

OT, though, I think certain people take their religion to astronomical standards, and try to force said religion on everyone else. I don't believe this is right, but religion tends to be a risky subject, so many people can get away with these sort of things. And I also feel very bad for that poor kid.

Burn her! [/Semi-Joke]
Seriously, we apparently just got out of the dark ages, if we take a step back we'll be doomed :|
and then there are people like this. I have low tolerance for people like that. I can tolerate religious people, door to door converters, but if someone wants to screw with my premium time, they better have the means to pay for it.
hell, I have nothing against people who want to believe, but they better not force anything...

write a counter article in the school news paper pointing out the first amendment and the separation of church and state, if you just want to make a point. Honestly though, unless she like, unionizes the parents in protest or something she's not really a threat to your school's library.

No, no no. She should simply tell the school not to allow her son access to it. She has absolutely NO right to push her religion and opinions on everyone else. Just because she is deluded does not mean the whole school must suffer. God, if I had gone to High School in America I would have gone INSANE!

Y'know what we should do? We should form a "Christian" church with views and beliefs the EXACT opposite(except for basic theological stuff, like God and Jesus) of most churches, and try and push our views on them. We could lobby, protest, and preach hate just like they do, and maybe they will start to see what they are doing.
The funny thing is her son does read that stuff and his mom doesn't know. I know her son cause he's popular and he tries to not let this bring him down. He's a pretty happy buy but I haven't gotten to know him.

I'm not Christian but isn't there something about 'loving thy neighbour' and respecting everyone regardless of background or belief?
