I'll be honest with you: I watched V for Vendetta two years ago, and fell in love. I actually purchased a mask, tailored my own costume (bullet-proof vest and all) and went out as him for Halloween. And then... I started to learn. Fawkes didn't want to overthrow a corrupt government, he wanted overthrow the Protestant monarchy and install a Christian one, like the one currently (period term) operating in Spain. The man fought for his beliefs, but by no means was he a "freedom fighter" or an "admirable hero". He was a terrorist. What the British government did to him afterwards was barbaric (tortured him, and planned to have him hanged, drawn and quartered). I do quite like the story though. A few months ago I picked up Moore's two magnum opuses, Watchmen and V for Vendetta, and had a rollicking good time reading them.
So what am I going to do today?
Probably pop on my mask and wear it to the theater in honor of him. I don't particularly like what he did, but any man who fights for his beliefs (within reason) is okay in my book.
