I considered overthrowing the government in a bloody, but hilarious badly planned terrorist attack on religious grounds, but the idea fizzled.

Just think, in a few hundred years, all the cool kids will be wearing bin Laden masks on September 11s.
I don't know excatly what to make of that comment, but I can assure you that I have no wish to overthrow the current government...at least not by blowing them up. I celebreate the ideas that come with this day, not the actions of a catholic trying to kill a king.

Ah yes, November 5th. The day we felt morally obligated to come up with a good reason to let off fireworks every year, so we executed somebody who wanted to blow up the government. YAY FIREWORKS

No, the idea that people can revolt and make a difference in their country. That ideas and words still have power, things that should never be forgotten.
Things like a false and romanticised view of the Gunpowder plot?

Because what's been remembered is a lie, and the actual events are largely forgotten. This is not a unique point in history, but it is a dangerous one. Even as Guy Fawkes masks appear on Occupy Wall Street in America, the majority of Americans have forgotten how we got to this point, though it is quite important. "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." And what will we take from this? Probably what we took from Guy Fawkes.

Guy Fawkes masks represent the importance of fiction over fact. You pretty much said it yourself.

I'm sure Australia has its own analogues. It's shit. Dangerous, hypocritical shit.
I'm not celebrating or even really talking about the gunpowder plot. I'm talking about the movie 'v for vendetta'. And while that may have being somewhat based on the gunpowder plot, I chose to follow the message both the movie and comics had. And besides, artists use lies to tell the truth, while politicians use lies to cover the truth up.

And you just demonstrated you missed the point entirely.

Where the imagery of Guy Fawkes as a hero has a huge part.

And while that may have being somewhat based on the gunpowder plot, I chose to follow the message both the movie and comics had.
Which still doesn't mesh with what you said just a couple minutes ago. So...what things should be remembered? You didn't answer that.

And besides, artists use lies to tell the truth, while politicians use lies to cover the truth up.
Trite, false, and silly.

Kinda like the Guy Fawkes thing in the first place.

Look, I'm sure you think it's awesome to guide yourself with popcorn philosophy, but this is every bit as silly as forming a religion based on the Matrix.

....a religion based on the Matrix? That's something I would need to see, and then I would no doubt only laugh at it. But back to the point, I can see the confusing, and I have never being good at explaining my self, so I'll just give a really cut down version of what I'm trying, and failing, to get across: "I like the movie V for Vendetta, I agree with some of the messages and so I decided to wear a mask on the day the movie's events center around. The original point of this tread was just to ask how people celebrate the day, not argue about politics."

I....wouldn't do that, everyone's going to think your an anonymous member.
That is something I have no problem with. I even support them, while not identifying myself as a active member.

I celebrate the 5th of November by receiving presents, money and cake.

And at least some alcohol for this specific November 5th.

How silly of me, I forgot that this important event must have music. So, I present this for your enjoyment.

At last I know what that piece is called! thank you!
No problem. In fact, that's only one small part. The full piece comes close to fifteen minutes long.
And that's just the overture. o.o

There is something terribly wrong with the world. The weak ignore it. The brave attempt to change it. The heroes are the ones that pull it off. Today should be a reminder that ideas and words are far more important than anyone gives credit to. That the world is ours to change. That we can fix things if we unite together and stand as one society and one species. That one idea can spread like a flash through the entirety of humanity. Things didn't used to be this way. It's time they changed.

That's what the mask stands for. A reminder that while no one may know who you are, you will fight for them regardless. And regardless of what opposition is faced. Regardless of how impossible it may seem. No matter the odds, the line will be held. We shall keep calm and carry on. In defiance of god himself, if need be. Humanity made manifest, and united.

Remember, remember, the fifth of November, gunpowder treason and plot. I see no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot. Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, 'twas his intent to blow up the King and the Parliament. Three score barrels of powder below, Poor old England to overthrow: By God's providence he was catch'd With a dark lantern and burning match. Holloa boys, holloa boys, make the bells ring. Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!

I just watched V on a livestream yesterday, and I don't have a Guy Fawkes mask, so... nothing.

I didn't realise there was any celebrating to be done today, aside from using it as an excuse to have a bonfire night in England. Does the rest of the world give one damn about today? Because I sure don't.

Shit, don't have my mask with me.

I guess I'll look around to see what everyone else is doing...

I'm English and not even remotely celebrating it. I'm neither Catholic, Protestant nor an anarchist so...meh.
