it has long been said that modern gaming consoles can't do horror survival. That it's too difficult, that it wouldn't sell, that the restrictions of previous systems were what allowed Horror Survival to exist.

And then here comes Resident Evil 6.

For those who don't know, Resident Evil 6 is divided into 3 game types played by 3 different sets of characters. Well...2 game types are virtually identical, but the first game type, in which you play Leon S Kennedy or his partner, is classic Resident Evil.

And it is GLORIOUS.

It's survival horror with you being forced to examine and manage your inventory and watch your bullets carefully. It's zombies, it's monsters it's...

it's so much fun.

So with this proof that Survival Horror could work on modern systems, would anyone want to try more classic Survival Horror games?

EDIT: it seems people aren't listening. I wasn't reffering to RE 6 as a whole but Leon's campaign. It made me think of the old survival horror games, granted it could've used more puzzles and it had its shooty moments, but largely it made me think of the classic RE 2, 3 and Code Veronica days.

Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha.

No.

There is absolutely nothing 'survival horror' about RE6 or Leon's campaign.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the game. What I've played so far has been relatively enjoyable. But it is not survival horror. It's a third person zombie-kicking game up to its ears in QTEs.

What the hell...?

Resident Evil 6 "survival horror"?

This just goes to show you how far the termites have spread. I guess if enough people call games like Bioshock "survival horror" then people actually start believing it.

It's not survial horror, just a servicable action game.

Resident Evil hasn't really been about survial horror since Code Veronica, RE zero, and Remake.

Even then, other than the Resident Evil Remake, Resident Evil hasn't never been that scary, at least compared to other games in the genre such as Silent Hill.

Resident Evil 6 .... Survival horror.

Those two do not belong in the same sentence.

In fact, Resident Evil 6 abused survival horror so badly it left town, changed it's name, had a makeover and is now in hiding so RE6 can't find it again.

I got you, OP. I thought Leon's campaign was awesome in comparison to the others. It's not as scary as I thought, but the tone is very much classic Resident Evil from the beginning, when Leon has to

shoot the zombie president, whom mirrors the very first zombie encounter in the first Resident Evil game.

It's the most fun the game has to offer.

Resident Evil 6 isn't the return of horror survival to modern gaming consoles.

For it to return it would have had to be gone.

Leon's campaign is quite a weak attempt at survival horror. Granted it's much much better than the other 2 campaigns, but it's still pretty anaemic. If Capcom removed all the intrusive QTEs, allowed the player to actually shoot at corpses they suspect might be zombies and bothered to add some tension to the whole scenario, then some elements of 'survival' and 'horror' might actually be able to shine through.
As it stands, Resident Evil 6 is a worrying example of AAA survival horror.

I expect more indie developers are going to end up going down the survival horror route simply because its become a genre that large publishers just aren't making games for anymore. There's a nice gap in the market forming.

It sucks that the best horror game I've played all year is bloody Slender!

Personally I think Resident Evil 6 is so utterly terrible in every way that I am now only playing it out of morbid curiosity to see just how much worse it can possibly get. It's become kind if hilarious to me in a farcical way.

And that's after only finishing Leon...

I guess this is the 'new' kind of survival horror Capcom is going for. :p

How long can you survive without rage quitting! Actually even rage quitting punishes you, putting you back sometimes as far as 5 or 6 checkpoints when you re-start. Well played, Capcom.

Wow that means Half Life was survival-horror all along. Think about it. You save up ammo to fight freaks of nature and zombies and occasionally one big dude.

Freeman has no one liners though. That maybe a problem.

If Leons part is the most survival horror one, as I have heard then no it's not, it's just a 3rd person action game decent on at its best somewhat stupid at its worst.

I have only played Leon's Campaign. It was really tedious for the first half (fucking catacombs), but the Second half of the game had a pretty cool atmosphere. I really like the part when the virus hits China and you are running through the streets for a bit, and the parts where you team up with other people when the campaigns intersect is cool. But the game feels less like survival horror and more like an action game with some of the worst level designs ever.

I am really hoping the other campaigns are better. I don't know how it could be worse than the middle part of Leon's Campaign, but I have a feeling Capcom will find a way.

Co-op cannot be scary. Even playing alone, you know there's someone there to watch your back. There is nothing scary about that. Why couldn't at least one campaign be solo (not counting Ada's)?

Remember how tense it was trudging through an unnaturally quiet castle with the odd jibe at the castellan to lighten the mood? If that were recreated nowadays, there would be explosions and hundreds of spawning enemies and ammo everywhere and the sound of your partner shouting for help and the castellan would be Wesker, and the jibes would be angry growling.

Resident Evil 6 and survival horror in the same sentence? Does not compute! Well, to be fair and honest I haven't played the game yet, I'm merely judging it based on Resident Evil 5 and 4 which is very wrong of me. But I never would have considered Resident Evil to be a survival horror anymore. But due to your views I may look into the game further. You've got me interested!

Besides, a return to survival horror would have to mean that it was gone in the first place.

What about, I don't know, Silent Hill?
As much as people ***** about the current generation entries to the series, they're still good games AND they're survival horror.
The atmosphere is there, you're always short on ammo and health packs (which forces you to run the fuck away on many occasions), there's no sidekick helping you all the time AND little to no QTE's (I honestly can't remember any, while in RE, there's a ton of them).
I haven't played Shattered Memories yet but Homecoming and Downpour are really good.

I guess you could call Condemned a survival horror as well and that game was also good.

I wouldn't call Condemned "survival horror". Any game that bases it's gameplay primarily on reflexes and knee-jerk responses is action.

Homecoming and Downpour prove chinangel's point. Niether of those games have sold well, AT ALL. Double Helix has been taken off Silent Hill, and Vatra is rumored to be in the process of getting shut down.

It also makes me cringe that you think Homecoming is "really good", but that's an entirely different discussion.
