I agree with this exactly. Also Resident Evil 5 was easily the worst game I played last year, and this is coming from someone who bought Fuel on launch day.Furburt said:Best: Resi 4.

Really, I'm not parroting Croshaw, I really found them boring as shite.
Sheva's AI seemed like instead of programming it to play like a friend, they programmed it to play like a griefer who would continually screw you. And the biggest problem with RE becoming an action game is they didn't change the controls to a setup that actually works for an action game.Voodoo_Person said:Best: Resi 2/3, they were my favourite games
Worst: Shevas AI on RE5, that got on my bloody nerves
With regards to 5, it was a good game, but i didnt like the way RE has gone from being survival horror, to action game, need the bloody zombies back
There's a pretty big distinction in gameplay between "old" and "new" Resi. Like you pointed out, the ammo is scarce and just staying alive is a real challenge, especially early in the game. That's kinda the point of survival horror, I won't rag on people who skipped the originals but played 4/5, my housemate did it and I had to explain who Chris, Jill and Wesker were. But for a series that popularised survival horror, the switch to action horror was bound to alienate some of the older fans. (Although if you asked me, this started with number 3, far too much ammo/health items).ForcastiaBluey said:I really, really liked both Resident Evil 4 and 5, but that's because I started the series with 4 and it was hard to go back. I played 2, and I thought it was all right, but not really anything I felt compelled to keep in my library.
I think I'm just not a fan of the slow-paced horror that old-style Resident Evil had. I prefer the action survival sort of thing that 4 and 5 did, where you're scared (or slightly nervous) that you could die at any moment because of the monsters coming to get you - sort of a Left 4 Dead style horror. Old Resident Evil seemed like it was scary because the damn game never gave you any ammo and it expected you to run away from everything. Playing a game where you can't actually fight anything because it won't give you any tools IS scary, but it's also frustrating and cheap, and really not what I'm looking for.
So I guess I'm a fan of Resident Evil, but one of those "bad" fans who came for 4 and stayed for 5 and ruined everything for the rest of you.
(Umbrella Chronicles was also pretty fun.)
That is a really good point, and you reminded me of the one thing that really bothered me about 5 and some parts of 4 - you're not alone. In 2 you were just Leon or Claire, wandering around exploring by yourself and you could not escape the fact that except for the zombies, you were completely, utterly, soul-crushingly alone. A big part of horror games is the feeling of being alone, far from help. Society makes fun of the people in horror movies who run off by themselves and get separated, but there's not really much horror when you have someone else with you sharing life stories and jokes about Wesker's amazing ability to talk through his nose.Dok Zombie said:That's kinda the point of survival horror, I won't rag on people who skipped the originals but played 4/5, my housemate did it and I had to explain who Chris, Jill and Wesker were.
