the resident evil films are quite popular and successful, to the point where non-gamers will pick up a resident evil game thinking its an adaptation of the movie.

why havn't resident evil games taken more inspiration from the films, because the games seem to be pretty rubbish by now why not take inspiration from the films?

i havn't played alot of resident evil because call me crazy but japanese action games should not hide behind a facade of western action/horror, but i would quite like a more film inspired game particularly if it was from the first three films.

edit: ok, to clarify what i mean by inspiration i don't mean narrative inspiration.

the thread thru all the films for me was a super human more or less as a shepard over less capable humans.

i guess this is the idea from the films i'd like to see in a game, becuase you never feel threatened in a RE game why not focus the threat on your flock? It works in the films, we all know mila jovavich(?) isn't going to die.

I'd say that they have tried playing off of the movies a little bit. The newer games are starting to have big-time setpieces and crazy camera angles like the films.

I hope the games get back to their roots in the survival genre. The new games are too action-y for my tastes. I remember when you had to CONSERVE your ammo and health items, but now you always have a surplus.

The games and movies are about as awful as each other at this point.

We have a series of awful games (apart from the fourth one apparently, although I never understood why) that inspired a series of awful films. I honestly can't decide if it would be an improvement if the awful games turned around and started imitating the awful movies.

Come to think of if it, I doubt that a game "inspired by the movies" would be significantly different. Hell, how would you even be able to tell? Well apart from the fact that it would probably have that Alice lady in there somewhere.

Cause of the quirky gameplay diversity and charmingly bad one-liners as opposed to more shoot-em-ups?

I'm sure we could fit more gratuitous slow-mo in there somewhere.

Eh, to me it's just another third person shooter, except with a painfully clumsy control scheme and dialogue that is woeful even by video game standards.

I suppose that's where the "charmingly bad" comes into it, but you'll have to forgive me for wanting more than "so bad that you might laugh at how bad it is."

The fourth revitalized a franchise that was at that point as dead and rotten as the zombies it depicted, by revolutionizing the controls, getting rid of nonsensical puzzle item hunting, ditching the Umbrella/Wesker bullshit, and becoming fully aware of how silly it was without actually winking to the camera.

Resident Evil 4 was subtle camp, as opposed to today where games feel the need to scream in your face at how quirky they are.

The games have already seemingly taken inspiration from the movies and are now action games as opposed to the survival horror of the earlier games. In my opinion, given the lacklustre efforts of recent entries in the game series, a move away from the movies would be more beneficial at this point.

That being said I do get a guilty pleasure out of the movies even though I know they are shit.

Well Resident Evil films are the most profitable game adaptations out there with every consequent movie getting more money than the previous. I believe by that point there's no use in comparing two since even the very first RE movie didn't really follow game plot.

The film plots make the game stories seem almost normal, so I'd rather they weren't borrowed for inspiration. What I want is just to see the Raccoon City outbreak from another point of view and without any superheroes, and to play the same thing.
