I played Resident Evil recently and it annoyed me. I understand the combat is restrained to keep the suspense thriving but with your character being highly trained in combat, you think certin individual would be able to move around while shooting. I wouldn't have a problem if the character was just some normal guy like James Sunderland then it would make sense but with Chris "the refridgerator" Redfield it doesn't fit. is he part fainting goat where his legs get stiff when he is scared??

Yeah the idea of having to stand still while shooting always kinda bugged me about Resident Evil. The gameplay still works fine but seems silly for a survival atmosphere. Then again if it was removed, Resident Evil would lose one of its most notable features. So I guess its easier to just accept.

Which Resident evil were you playing?

I'd say resident Evil 5 was most definitely not a survival horror. More of an action game partly because of the plentiful amount of ammo.

I was playing 5. They are definatly more Action than horror.

4 was fun though. I did play the others before that but they didn't scare me. how can you be scared if you're meant to be these tough military types?

Okay i don'T even know where to start. Firstly if you are talking about the series as a whole.Resient Evil is a horror survival. Resident evil 1 through 3 ( not counting the spinoffs ) are classic survival horror. Resident eveil 4 and 5 , is like a modern survival horror. Survivor horror as a genre, has evolved into more actiony kind of thing. But i think that is due to developpers trying to please the wider range of gamers. The Resident evil series really shows the evolution the genre has made. Some people like it , others hate it , as with anything.

Now for standing still and shooting, well, i really don't know what to say to this. Realism ? Run and gunning is not as effective as one might think. A person is A LOT more precise when they are standing still and aiming rather than running and gunning. Run and Gun makes more sense in a game like Left 4 Dead , because Zombies in that game are basically humans with a taste for flesh. Thus getting shot once or twice would make them topple over and die. Zombies in Resident evil , are more like, Super Humans with a taste for flesh. The T virus ( in the older games ) and the parasite bug in RE4 and 5 basically makes the infected, more resilient, stronger, more durable (as well as being mind controlled?) than classic zombies.A single bullet doesn't cut it. You really need to hit them where it hurts for them to die ( basically where the parasite is exposed ), and to do so you really need to aim .

Anyways this is my take on it , take it or leave it if you will .

The the original (And the HD remake) was certainly survival/horror. Zombies took several bullets to kill and if you didn't go back and burn their corpses they'd come back stronger than before. The knife was pretty much useless so you had to conserve ammo or you'd be screwed. It also had a fixed camera that made spotting zombies really difficult, usually the first clue that there was one nearby was some off-screen moaning.

1 - 3 were most certainly survival horror. Particularly good ones at that.

4, whilst IMO the best in the series moved the game away from survival horror to action more of an action focus.

5... Don't hate me for this but I REALLY hated 5. It just wasn't a RE game to me :/

Resident Evil 5 isn't a survival horror it's a co op third person shooter.

It's kind of sad they dropped the sh gameplay it could have gotten so much better with todays technology.

I find it hilarious that you cant reload while walking...Clearly Chris specced into arm muscles over multitasking :p

Resident Evil is survival horror, its just and always has been more about the survival aspect. Its about doing whatever you can to survive a hopeless situation. Other horror games like Silent Hill and say Fatal Frame are scarier, because they focus on the horror aspect of the genre. I think RE is actually a better GAME than other horror games because of that.

Well, in real life you don't usually see people shooting while running, or if they do it's more to scare their enemies then to actually hit something since accuracy goes to shit if you're moving. And by real life I of course mean news, documentaries, etc...

I understand that. But I like the fact that in most shooters when you aim down sights you can still move around slowly, and that movement usually punishes accuracy anyway. That works. I understand being stationary for the sake of accuracy, but I'd imagine being in the middle of an angry horde of zombies would create a sense of urgency.

I don't really care that much and it still works, but its still a bit silly in concept. Why not at least have the option to be mobile?

You should have at least played half or more of the games in the series before making a thread like this.

Without games like Alone in the Dark, Resident Evil, and Silent Hill there would BE no survival horror genre.

The inability to move and aim doesn't bother me as I've gotten used to it, it would be a nice addition but to keep things tense it would only have you able to walk and not run while aiming.

I've never really thought Resident Evil was scary, nor did I think Survival Horror was a genre, its just an adventure game in a horror setting.

I hated the inability to move and shoot simultaneously, but it does involve survival and it is a horror game, so your point is moot. Disliking a game does not change the type of game it is.

4 felt like a comedy-horror to me. I genuinely ran into some tense moments, especially the first Troll I fought since I completely ran out of ammo and had to fight it with a knife, but Leon's quips and the action set made it feel like Leon was AWARE he was in a horror game and was gonna make the most of it.

5 is a action game pretending to be horror with some monsters and icky moments.

What Resident Evil are you talking about specifically? I could be wrong but Resident Evil is a game in which you play as Jill Valentine looking for Chris Redfield with the aid of Barry and, Wesker who definitely isn't evil. Jill is still a part of STARS with is supposed to be a highly trained fighting force so I can see what you mean there but Resident Evil 2 is definitely more of a survival horror since Leon is a rookie cop and, Clair is a random person. Resi-3 is Jill again and if you don't play on Hard mode you don't get a shotty or, M16. I've still not had a chance to play Resi-4 though and Resi-5 was just too damned easy. Spam level 1 until you have ONE MILLION DOLLARS then buy your way to the best weapons and breeze through the rest of the game without a care in the world...in multi-player, in Single-Player there's the constant threat of Shiva using your best healing items on a paper-cut and, flicking peas at the big bosses when she has a rocket launcher up her ass.
