There are a lot of popular artists in the world of music today. The Beatles, Coldplay, Elton John, all popular artists, and great artists. There are so many more, I just threw out a few examples to present my point. But there are a lot of talented artists that arent so popular. Name a group or artist (or several) that you think are talented but not well known. For me, I would say Tom Waits. Hes extremely talented, but every time I bring him up in conversation, no one ever knows who he is. (And yes, Im aware that The Beatles are no longer together, they are just one of my favorite bands, and they are popular, so I used them to present my argument. :D)

Vocal Spectrum. They've been the barbershop champions for several years running, but they don't get the recognition that I feel they deserve. Probably because too few people even care about barbershop anymore.

Ah, what I wouldn't give to be able to sing in another quartet...

Tom who? Muahahahahha!

But anyway...almost no one knows who were the Traveling Wilburys. A rock group that had George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan in the same band!

I say Jeffrey Lewis. He's kind of like a modern day Bob Dylan, and he doesn't get nearly enough props.

Also The Most Serene Republic for creating probably the most enthusiastic and pleasant sound I've ever heard.

Trivium

But the whole point of Metal is anti-establishment. So hell with papularity and mainstream.

They probably just think it's old-fashioned. My problem is that I don't know anyone else with the talent since my old quartet disbanded after everyone graduated. Shame, cause we were pretty good.

I was under the impression that Trivium was fairly well known. Everyone I know listens to them.

Well then you and the people you know are cool.
Usually people outside of the metal scene don't know who they are, but that's just from my own experience.

Drowning Pool. Really well known for one song, Bodies (Let the Bodies Hit the Floor, for those long winded types) but they have many other good songs that I never seem to hear, except on my personal playlist. Good examples are Enemy, Soldiers, Sinner, and Shame (that's four songs, not one song with a long name. When I read that over it sounded like it could make a good name: Enemy Soldiers, Sinner and Shame :) )

Yay Tom Waits! His voice is somehow soothing, even though it sounds like Louis Armstrong gargling gravel.

Anyway, I like The Long Winters [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TknNcpAAlA] (hardly anyone knows who they are) and Ben Kweller [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pBx-vezzwc] (slightly more well known), both of which are indie rock.
Also, Old Crow Medicine Show [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2vJUadjdmo] on the country side of things. They are just flat-out awesome.

Never quite heard Tom's voice described that way... :p
