Reversing Roles in Video Games

So get this. I was watching a mate of mine play Call of Duty MW3 and Battlefield later that day, and I noticed (not for the first time) that it was all about American soldiers beating down the doors of pretty much every other country (I haven't played it, but apparently Uncharted 3 starts this shit as well) and I thought this- what if we could play a game in the role of a minority or a terrorist group or something. Alright, alright most war games used to about WW2 and rehashing America's sole moment of glory, but with the modern day FPS riding high, why not have a game set in an alternate version of Earth circa 2011 and play as the "bad" guys. It's not just FPS games that have got me thinking about this. My idea of an ultimate game would be a sandbox game where you take on the role as a central villain. GTA:San Andreas was a step in the right direction, and Saints Row the Third was good but a bit boring and repetitive. Even an RPG would be great to play like this. Not like the Fable kind of evil mind you, there still needs to be a middle ground so you're character is not basically Hitler all the time (unless that's your thing). I understand that there would be plot holes that would be challenging to fill in(especially if a sequel is involved), but that's why you hire professional writers for Christ's sake. Perhaps they could use some of the spare writers of MW3 that are kicking around because they only had to work for like 5 weeks.

Anyway, to the point, what kind of games do you think playing as a villain could have great potential, and why?

Yahtzee once talked about a hypothetical game in Extra Punctuation where you play as the villain in a superhero story. He called the game Mankind Has Yet To Recognize My Greatness (or was it "genius"?). I'm too lazy to find the link, but it's a good idea.

This is a great idea. Probably not for a realistic military shooter because, well... thats problematic. Yahtzee decsribed an open world supervillian game in the same vain as Batman AC. Id love something like that.

You mean what Haze did?
Haze ended up making the rebels be the good guys and made the organized military evil. I wont a game where your wreaking peoples shit because you want to take over the world, or for shits and giggles. Whichever.

Well, there was an RTS called Evil Genius on PC some years back... More comedy than anything, but still.

Perhaps you could do one of the Spiderman games as a strategy game by playing the Kingpin.

Then again, I can always look back fondly on the old Dungeon Keeper set. Ah, those were the days. Back-handing imps and dropping rebellious minions into the torture chambers for "morale adjustment" therapy. Capturing pesky "goody-goodies" and tormenting them into either turning to my side or rising once more as undead minions bereft of free will.

There's a Halo mod? And I was a bit ambiguous, I mean the actual grunts that go around screaming and tossing stickies.
Oh. When you said 'Grunt' I thought you meant like...a nameless, non-special soldier who dies like everyone else. But you meant the Halo alien Grunt.

Nevermind. -skips off-

I'm still waiting on the FF game where you play the 4 warriors of chaos , instead of the four warriors of light . In the original FF game , the premise of the story was , you were four warriors of light that came to the world to reinstate the balance between good and evil . Cosmos ( good ) was losing against chaos ( evil ) and you were to put the balance back . Anyways in the game there was a guy that said that many years prior to them coming , cosmos was wining against chaos , and chaos sent 4 warriors of darkness to bring back the balance ,Basically causing destruction .

I would really like to see that story unfold and be told by squaresoft ( now known as square -enix)

There was FFCC: My Life as a Dark Lord on WiiWare. Not the same, but you're the daughter of the main villain from My Life as a King. I think the game holds you to being evil, too, but I haven't played it myself.

*You play as the "bad guys".
