I make leaps of faith.

I don't really trust any reviewer. They're paid to get through the game in record time by deadline and if they must they have to use cheats to acquire said goal. It's not a pleasant atmosphere to get a real feel for the game. You're not sipping it like fine wine and delicately inhaling the aroma. You're chugging it out of a keg and you're going to wake up out if it bitter and sick. I prefer the former of playing video games, taking my sweet time. Which is why I usually disagree with reviewers, I suppose.

Then again, maybe things have changed... or I read something wrong once. My memory is awful.

I actually had a different reaction. Rather than look at reviewers I tend to look at other people, i.e. those on this forum. For example a lot of people seem to say Halo 3 is bad but I actually enjoyed it. Thats why I don't listen to people.

Prototype. It's hard to measure how pumped I was for that game just off the previews. I played that shit for an hour at best before I called it the most disappointing game of the year.

I don't bother taking reviews seriously any more. I usually disagree with them anyway. I tend to look at gameplay footage and write ups about what the story is about etc, and see whether I'll like it using those. Also i'll ask people who I know have similar tastes to mine and see what they think. Far more useful for me in my opinion.

I had this reaction to Metroid: other M. it looked awesome and I was all set to buy it... until I read reviews and heard the story (Which turns Samus into a broken, whining, self-loathing, insult to women, who can't even use weapons until her boyfriend tells her it's ok... WHO THOUGHT THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA!?!?!?)I am disgusted by what was done to such a great character.
It's strange but I don't even care if the gameplay is good or not, I just don't want Samus to be a symbol of the worst thing to come from men writing female characters.

ok nerd rage over. sorry you had to see that.
This was pretty much my reaction. I'm not even a huge fan of metroid, but I was pretty pissed when I heard what they did with Samus.

It sounds awful...

Shadow the Hedgehog. And I went and got it anyway. Now I wish I listened...

But most other times I've never given a crap about reviews, and that's never lead me wrong. One bad time does not mean I'll always listen to the reveiwers. Just see it as a bad sign.

one of them was Ghostbusters. I loved the movies and i thought the game would be awesome. But since i listen to yahtzee about which games are good, i decided not to listen to him on this one. unfortnatly because of my curiosity, i watched it and there were many problems with it. i don't ever listen to him again.

Spiderman web of shadows. I still kept the game though just to swing around the city.

None because i don't follow reviews like the people writing are some god and we have to take their word as law.
Your name is alarmingly appropriate.

Also, your comment is a bit on the wonky side. People don't use 'reviews' as 'law', they use it as 'guidelines' to 'see if a particular cash investment is worth the cash investment'.

But no, you're clearly right, it's a much better idea to sink $60 into something shiny without bothering to do any research at all about it.

Consumer advocacy is for suckers, I say. Especially when dealing with a market that is notorious for having incredibly dodgy policies dictating returns. (PC games tend to have NO RETURNS, you know. None whatever.)

Women love a man who just hurls his cash at shit he has not bothered to learn anything about. It shows character.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
the review for monster hunter tri on gamespot really annoyed me because they didnt like really stupid things and they said that the game was bland, the only way you could call the graphics of that game bland is if you spend the entire time looking at the fucken ground, now you could call them low res but not bland

Tales of Symphonia 2, I didn't think It was going to be good. But I had that niggling little ray of hope at the back of my brain that it would somehow just pull it together.

It didn't.

And I was sad.

Because the first one was so very very enjoyable.

Man if the OP asked if anyone listened to reviews instead of asking which game did you not buy because of a review, everyone would be OT....

Draconis, review talked about bugs that + the demo wasn't that great.

All Points Bulletin. I almost bought it, until I found a video from a Beta tester explaining (and showing, of course) exactly why the game was going to fall flat on its face.

Metroid Other M. It looked awesome but then, I saw Spoony's review and was kinda dissapointed. Considering he usually knows what he's talking about.

So I guess I'm going to be the uncool guy who listens to "The Man" and "The Corporation". I get a lot of use out of reviews. They often give helpful information about gameplay, bugs, and other things that can make or break a game. I saw previews way early in development for Mafia II and I was thinking that even though I enjoyed the first game greatly, the setting and the gameplay style has been done and done to the point that it would just feel to same-y. The game comes out, reviews come out, and lots of them point out exactly what I was fearing.

I was really looking forward to Alpha Protocol, but then when it came out reviewers said a lot about horrible AI and game-breaking bugs. I'll still play the game eventually, but only when I find it really cheap or when I hear that a patch has come out that fixes the bugs.

You can just watch gameplay videos, but then developers aren't going to show the bad parts and the bugs. I appreciate reviews for giving me a filter. There's lots of games out there, so it's good to have something that gives me some sort of guide of what to buy now or wait until it becomes cheap, what to rent or what to steer clear of.

I've had it happen a few times. One time I didn't listen to them. I got Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts. It was as bad as the reviews said (that is to say not terrible, just boring).
