Why don't I gift-purchase it FOR you, and YOU do a review on this fine website?

PM me if you're interested, OP.

OT: Going WAY back here, but the first Halo was almost universally acclaimed. Then I bought it.

And the Campaign was TERRIBLE.

(Bit of a twist there, I know)

So I guess I'm going to be the uncool guy who listens to "The Man" and "The Corporation". I get a lot of use out of reviews. They often give helpful information about gameplay, bugs, and other things that can make or break a game...
I agree, it seems that a lot of people on this thread seem to think reviews are irrelevant, and should have no effect on our purchasing decisions. I say this to these people...

you make Yahtzee cry.

That sounds great! I'd love to do that. What did you have in mind exactly? PS, It comes out in three days, so I obviously wouldn't be able to start playing it till then.

I never quite understood the whole "I don't read reviews, I play the games I like." argument. I get what people stating it are trying to say, but it also comes off as smug and superior, as if they imply that everyone else is blind sheeple. Also, how do you know you like a game you never played? Sure, you might like the artwork, the overall concept and such, but the game itself still needs to be played before any actual judgement can be made.

Personally, I never put much stock in individual reviews. They tend to be skewed and subjective. However, agregate reviews can offer a reasonable idea of the game. Reading several reviews, both positive and negative, finding commonalities and information that all the reviewers agree on and in the end forming a reasonable picture of the overall quality of the game can help guide one's purchases for the better.

Of course, you should look for games that you like. If you hate JRPGs you shouldn't buy the next Final Fantasy game, no matter how well it's reviewed. I don't care how well a CoD game is reviewed, I'm not buying one. However, if a hot new RPG comes out and I like the look of it, you can be damn sure I'll go to Metacritic and read up before committing to the game financially.

Unless it's a Bioware game, then it's a Day 1 purchase... :p

Crackdown 2 for me. I was greatly looking forward until I failed to notice a single bit of positive news on the subject...

None because i don't follow reviews like the people writing are some god and we have to take their word as law.
Yeah because EVERYONE ELSE is that fucking stupid.
I can't tell you how many times I've been burned doing this. If it's not just waiting a day or so to see how some game does on metacritic, it's ignoring reviews altogether...because how bad can Aliens Vs. Predator really be, right...
On the other hand, I was stoked for Mafia II, until a trusted review site I've used for years gave it a low score, but all the gamers I trust on other forums have really enjoyed it.... so it's not always that simple.

I ALWAYS consult Metacritic before going to the movies/buying a new game. Excepting the following franchises:
1) Super Mario (the main series, not the spin-off sports and crap)
2) The Legend of Zelda
3) Metal Gear Solid (note: Acid =/= Solid)
4) Anything from Blizzard
5) Anything from VALVe

However I personally feel that individual reviews are quite helpful, and have never completely disagreed with one (that I can remember). Don't forget, these people do this for a living. I would hope after years of writing reviews, they would become quite skilled at it.

Nothing, seriously go get the game, yeah reviews are there to give you an informed idea of what you're getting but if you were really psyched for it then just get it and decide for yourself.

I've heard no actual news on Sonic Colours, admittedly the only games journalisim I follow are ZP and PC Gamer, and my mind is telling me it'll suck, but look at it! Only Sonic and Tails, you're back to saving cute creatures, they give you Mario style power-ups and Robotnik is trying to take over the world... by building A THEME PARK IN SPACE!

I can't be the only one who looks at this and has some of their cynicisim dissapear
This is possibly because you are mentally 11.
Well, that's rude.

The previews seem to say it's actually not that bad, though since bias is rather perverse in video game journalism websites, who knows.

It was Singularity. I didn't care that much to be honest but it looked awesome,, it was gameplay video's, 3/10's, and not much actual enthusiasm that put me off. Shame, it was a good idea poorly executed.

Thats a pretty good rated preview I think.

Nothing Really.
Most of the time the game i want to get has reviews that fit pretty well with my pre-play opinion.
Only game i can think of is that Crossover game Cross Edge on the PS3.

I had this reaction to Metroid: other M. it looked awesome and I was all set to buy it... until I read reviews and heard the story (Which turns Samus into a broken, whining, self-loathing, insult to women, who can't even use weapons until her boyfriend tells her it's ok...
Questioning ones power is not "Self-Loathing" and yes she is whiny.
Her voice doesnt help much either and the Monolauge for her is dreadful.
But Adam is NOT i repeat FUCKING NOT her boyfriend.
He is her Former CO and a man she views as a father.
Yes its stupid that restricting some things liek the Vera Suit but, mosst of the things he restricts her from using make sense as they could hurt other people.
Like the Power Bombs and her various Arm cannons.
And because Samus greatly Admires and Respects Adam it makes sense that she would listen to him.
(WHO THOUGHT THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA!?!?!?)I am disgusted by what was done to such a great character.
It's strange but I don't even care if the gameplay is good or not, I just don't want Samus to be a symbol of the worst thing to come from men writing female characters.

ok nerd rage over. sorry you had to see that.
All in all she wasn't destroyed, she still kicks HUGE amounts of ass and there is only a few cutscenes that make me go WTF.
And even the worst one, the Ridly scene, wasn't that bad and lasted all of 2 minutes before she proceed to kick his ass.
By the end of the game she is pretty much back to normal.
Samus really needed some characterization, but i agree it wasn't pulled off very well, especially because of where in the time line this game takes place.

Yeah, same here. Granted I kind of expected this. Team Ninja(of Dead or Alive/Ninja Gaiden fame) aren't exactly known for the best representations of women...

Still though, sad. I was expecting Nintendo to cover the narrative while they cover the gameplay, that would have been fine.

I base my purchasing decisions on friends advice, reviews and my overall impression of the game from ads 'n' whatnot.

I can't really think of one, maybe the first assassin's creed, which was hyped to the point of ridiculousness then ended up being fairly mediocre aside from the graphics and free running.

You might have misinterpreted me a little bit. I did say I read several reviews, which means I read several individual reviews :)

However, what I meant in my previous post is that I don't base my purchase on one single review. No matter how experienced a reviewer might be, he might have a bad day, he might have an inherent dislike for the game's genre or setting or the game might simply rub him the wrong way for no apparent reason (or all of this in reverse), resulting in a less than objective review/score.

No, I was agreeing with you. If I was being snide it was towards the many people in this thread who say things like "Reviews don't change my opinions, and they shouldn't change yours". I just think this is a really ignorant thing to say. The only way a review should NOT change you opinion is if you did NOT ever read it.

EDIT: But I'm not at all saying you should always agree with the reviewer, just take their views into consideration is all.
