I always liked the idea that once a character died they were always dead (see Fire Emblem) if it happened in KotOR or another squad based RPG it would make it incredibly hard, but I would definitely enjoy the challenge. Maybe an extra game mode in which enemies were more sparse.
The Baldur's Gate games would either permanently kill one of your characters or "incapacitate" them, depending on how much damage they sustained when their hit points fell below zero. It keeps the game moving a little quicker if you don't have to reload to prevent a character's death or go back to town to revive a lost character. But yeah, it takes a lot of the challenge out.
Actually...at least in the first one a character either died or could be turned to stone, effectively killing them and removing them from the party. In the former this meant a trek to the nearest temple for a resurrection, for the latter a prayer that you didn't forget to stock some stone to flesh scrolls. Either way if either those happened to the -main- character it was game over, bit stupid really. But it was one of the things that made the game a little more difficult.

Plenty of old school rpgs did this (Name a Black Isle game they all did it).

Led to plenty of reload spamming. I still prefer it to the silly "oh the fights over I'll just get up with one hit point" thing but yeah most people just hit reload which breaks 'flow'. Hail flow, all must be sacrificed before it in the name of 'good game design'.

Of course you could be talking about some kind of hardcore rougelike no saving permadeath dealy. In which case you are a mad man but I like how you think.

Characters permanantly dying isn't a bad concept, but considering every other game is based on a narrative where this doesn't happen, I always end up replaying Fire Emblem missions not because I NEED that character, but because I'm used to my main characters not dying in games...it's a bad habit, but one I probably will never break.

The sphere grid type leveling system in FFX. I have yet to see another game since then which has had a similar system.

WWII, they made a few games about it but it never seemed to catch on.
They should move on to WWIII already, because WWII is just getting old. Even though it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it can't be historical.
Too bad you cant have Japan in WWIII. Isn't it against their constitution to wage wars now?

No they're forbidden to raise an offensive military.

I think there should be more games where you feed a gelatinous blob jellybeans in order to change his shape and navigate a variety of obstacles.

I'm just saying...

Also, this will keep you sex life interesting. just one thing though try not to leave the game in the wii while you invite your grandparents over to play some wii sports.

Dont forget it people, you heard it here first.

Failed wars, any war where a superpower failed to do good in was never made into a game, besides some Nam games

sorry boss, I've heard that one a long time ago, from many different people.

I'd like to see a game where I just pretend I'm playing a musical instrument like I really have skill because I won't take the time to learn how to play it, but imagine that I do. Like piano.

but seriously, I'd like to see good space combat make a revival. Tie Fighter nailed it years ago, but anymore it's a long stretch finding a good one like that.

Soldiers: Heroes of WWII had a great unit control mechanic. A little clumsy at times, but all together amazing.

LOL. Only problem with that game was all the times when you needed a hole in exactly the right spot and ended up yelling at your TV- "Stand over there... no, *there*. No! Don't jump over to the other side of the screen! Fine- I'll give you another cinnamon so I can pick you up and drop you where I want you. ARGHH- I whistled for you to change back- not to change back and then jump over to the other side of me!"

That's a good example, though. I can't think of any good other games where a companion character was as integral or as versatile. It seems like there's rich territory for mining there.
