Vampires and Mind Flayers in Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn are two of the most obnoxiously over-the-top ridiculously ludicrous enemies you will ever fight in a game.

Vampires level drain with each hit, and a swarm of them can reduce that fancy level 15 warrior to a lvl 1 punk within seconds. Even worse with mages as they loose all their spells and you have to manually re-memorize each and every spell they lost after the battle is over. Same with cleric.

And Mind Flayers ***EAT YOUR BRAINS!***

Enough said.

I grew up on Megaman (the originals). My friends and I traded off after every time we lost. The goal was not to beat the game, not even to beat the boss, but rather to get his life bar lower than your personal best.

Also, Ninja Gaiden 2 for the 360. Two Armadillo bosses that instakill explode when killed (you're only allowed to carry one revive). If I hadn't have gotten the game for such a great price it would have been returned the second those came up.

You would be the first I have ever heard of to be honest, I can't remember ever having real trouble in any j-rpg to be honest. Was there a game/moment in particular?

My pick would either be Left for Dead with expert being almost impossible to pass the final part of any campaign or Death Trap Dungeon for the ps1.

Trust me, it's very possible. If you push a certain block down a certain pit, you can block off a hallway that leads to a small key. You'll never be able to move the block out of your way for some reason. I can't really remember the specifics, but that's the main idea.

The water temple isn't hard just tedious because of the menu. I still don't believe that you can get stuck.
Yeah, it's impossible to get stuck. In my experience, if you're 'stuck' in the Water Temple, 90% of the time it's because you forgot to get the key that's underneath the central tower. The whole thing isn't bad at all if you're methodical about it - check every door and tunnel in a clockwise fashion with the water both up and and down, and don't unlock any doors until you get all the keys you can (I think there are 7 available without unlocking anything).

For really difficult games: anything with the words "Ninja Gaiden" in the title.

Call of Duty: World at War, veteran difficulty setting. Although that's really more "grenade spawns in lieu of actual challenge" than it is "difficulty"... And that's really not so much a "difficulty curve" as it is an exercise in endurance and self-hatred...

In terms of a game that had you constantly learning/re-learning/re-thinking how to play the game, I'd probably go with an obscure tactical RPG called Operation Darkness; more mainstream, probably Braid or Portal...

No wait, I got it! Star Wars: Force Unleashed!! The difficulty curve in that is just STUPID. They spend 3 missions getting you acclimated to controlling your guy in a 3D environment and then stick you in the HARDEST battle in the entire game while LOCKING the camera into one, STUPID location. Oh, and he's only hurt by thrown objects. And there's limited objects. And trying to grab & throw the objects while avoiding his CONSTANT attacks is like trying to simultaneously type on two different keyboards, while blindfolded, and drunk. And he's got four health bars. Two words: 'FUCK' and 'YOU,' Kazdan Paragus.

The dwarven area in Torchlight. I was playing on Hard, having a fairly easy time of it. All of a sudden I start losing 3/4 of my life bar from a single attack... from these tiny little robot things? I have no idea how that works, but it's brutal at times.

Of most recent games I've played, it has to be Prinny: Can I Really be the Hero? Dear lord, it's pretty much inspired by IWBTY but set in an utterly hilarious universe. The fucking levels are harsh and the bosses are flat out douchebags, I'm looking at you Chefbot-9000 and Sir Sweet!!


This game is fucking evil...but dear god will not give up despite how many times this game slaps you around.

Thats probably because your a "filthy vermin!" as he would say. Also on my second play through I forgot how to get to the boats working and ended up fighting Kvar and unlocking Sheena before fighting him, that made the difficulty curve weird.

Something that ruined a game for me was Baten Kaitos Origins after the disk swap since they made me save and then threw me fight into a boss fight that i wasn't strong enough to beat with no chance of grinding, that pissed me off, i've yet to finish that boss.

Right, well, I'm gonna go ahead and say "Demon's Souls" second run through. First time I played I powered throught the story, not really bothering with leveling. Then on the second run through I'm getting raped by mummies with broken swords.

A3s6, DMC 3 had the oddest difficulty curve. First was a normal lvl fight, an annoying bss, and that was a good first lvl. Then in the second lvl you get ashotgun and it makes mince meat outta the enemies. It just builds your confidence being able to pull off all these amazing moves, then suddenly you have to fight Cerberus, the overpowered doggy.

I gotta disagree. The game wasn't as bad as hype makes it out to be.

If it helps at all, I played the Gamecube version. I've heard that some versions fix it, and others don't.

Another crazy difficulty curve: Oblivion. Everything's going along great. You're a bandit-killing, Mud Crab stomping madman. Then come the trolls. They have a pretty high damage resistance, and their health regenerates at about the same rate you can take it away at that level. Soon after, the monsters become brick walls, taking at least 5 minutes of continuous whacking with your Sword Of Ultimate Power to topple just one of them.
