For me, and I might just be an RTS noob (very likely), the Kingdom under Fire games. Especially the second one. For the second one, I could get through like the first one or two levels on most of the characters' campaigns, but on the easiest character I got to about level four or something. I was is a gigantic cave and kept getting trapped in gigantic ice storms of death that my enemies kept throwing at me. I beat the two "easy" campaigns on the original, though, but on one of the other ones I just got stuck and couldn't ever move past it.

Granted, this was about five years ago.

Left 4 Dead 2... Expert was easy for me in Left 4 Dead, but when the second one came around, I just straight up couldn't do it. But I'm stubborn and I will not play on anything but Expert even if I get destroyed at it.

I think i broke about 6 x box controllers playing one level in Mass Effect 2 on insanity. I looked it up and saw that i brought the wrong weapon haha. I eventually finished that fucking level and beat the game on insanity and got the achievement and yes it was worth the 6 controllers.

For the record, it was the disabled collector ship where your on those floating platforms getting constantly barraged by Harbingers and flanked by collectors left and right with that cheep black spell by the harbinger that knocks you down ready for fire and blind sighting issues! And how that scion is following you around dropping your shields in one hit!!!!!! And once you kill THAT ONE ANOTHER POPS UP and he keeps dropping your shields YEARGGGHHHHHH!!!!!

Apologies......

No one's mentioned it yet? Seriously?

The Water Temple from OoT. Everything's a breeze for the entire game, and then BAM! Lowering/raising water levels, going all the way to the clothing menu to change into your iron boots, and worst of all, being able to get yourself stuck forever if you do things wrong with absolutely no warning that such a thing was even possible.

Still haven't beaten it.

The water temple isn't hard just tedious because of the menu. I still don't believe that you can get stuck.
Oh ya you can, use those keys up on the wrong doors and your toast

I don't know why, but in Super Mario RPG, all is fine till I get to sea side town and have to fight in the ship... Can never pass it no matter how many times I restart the game.

I know allot of people on these forums will be too young to know this game. Populous 2 got INSANELY RIDICULOUSLY UNFAIRLY BRUTALLY hard towards the end. Never managed to beat it when i was young, now that im older I like to think that I could find a way, but i doubt it. the mechanics of the AI you fought were just unfair.

MW2 online was quite a bit harder for me to get the hang of than CoD4 online was, seriously; 2 hits and you're dead, spray and pray; you're dead, stop moving/finding cover for more than a second; you're dead. But I got the hang of it eventually.

Either Ninja Gaiden game on the hardest difficulty. There is no difficulty curve, the game will beat you mercilessly right at the beginning.

I don't know if anyone else found this hard, but the boss in Bubble Bubble drove my friend and I to a state of insanity.
Talk about drastic changes in difficulty...

Call of Duty: World at War on Veteran absolutely destroyed me. That part early on where you have to kill the German sniper? On Veteran, one hit will kill you and you have to hit him 3 times. Then there's the grenade spamming enemies that appear in every freaking level (And I swear on Veteran the game is altered so that any grenades thrown immediately target you). I got all the way to Heart of the Reich (2nd to last level) and gave up halfway through because of the infinitely respawning enemies.

Modern Warfare 2 on Veteran wasn't much better. I've finished all but 3 levels in it: Contingency (90 seconds to reach a checkpoint, complete with infantry, tanks and a helicopter), Loose Ends (Guard multiple entrances for god only knows how long, then break through the enemy lines to run away) and The Enemy of My Enemy (You versus two armies. Do the math).

Its not actually that hard, its actually easy to make yourself untouchable but the interface is really bad and confusing. Using a custom tileset (like May Green) helps a lot.

Left 4 Dead. Normal to Advanced or Expert seems impossible.
Gotta agree that expert is just .. well, play it if you are a masochist. Advanced is my prefered difficulty.
In L4D2 however.. im getting pulped in normal!

on topic-

Hard difficulty?
Lester the unlikely SNES(due to the fact the game is just BAD)

Tyrian on Lord-of-the-game difficulty, IIRC.. ennemy bullets were ultra-fast.. so you die REALLY quickly. "Good luck" Indeed.

Oblivion (modded or not, doesnt change anything in the long run) when you arent a magic user (because magic is broken-powerfull), when you are around lvl 20+ as a "rogue" or "warrior".. you die fast, and it takes litterally ages to kill anything. It can easily go in the hundred of arrows/sword blows (even when its your good skill).. to kill one bad guy.

Resident Evil 4; Countless QTEs and baddies that insta-kill you gets old very, VERY fast.

Operation Flashpoint: Due to some game bugs/unbalances.. ennemies spot YOU and only YOU even when you are behind several hundred allied soldiers. If you shoot and kill something, ALL ennemy AI shoots to kill YOU. Oh, and you die in a bullet or two (just like everyone else)
