X-Com: UFO Defense has a pretty steep difficulty curve, and I say this even in light of the fact that I am terrible at it. The missions start off easy and the basic aliens are easy to kill, but once you play a Terror Mission and the aliens start getting bigger, it is just SO HARD to get out without any casualties.
The X-com games are about as amazing as they are unforgiving. On some of those levels if you fuck up just ONCE, just ONE mistake - you're done for. My main solution is to just save like a banshee.

Doubt anyone knows these two, but the Final Mission of Ace Combat Zero was goddamn impossible.
You have 5 minutes to shoot down your former friend before a nuke goes off. Thing is, he can only be hit in the frontal ventilation exhaust (in front of the plane), and his plane is faster than yours. Even if you do somehow get him, you have to do it TWICE. That's right, pull off the destroying the Death Star TWICE.

And the campaign in Steel Sentinels is really hard too. (funorb game)

Battle Toads is probably the most difficult game I've ever played, and the biggest pain in my ass was the hover board section where you literally had to press the button two seconds before you could see the obstacle. My cousin and I managed to beat it though after a few tries.

Ninja Gaiden 2. Got to Venice, then it's all just a blur.
im with you. first couple of levels were fine, then the worm boss... that god damned worm boss. then all hunky dory until venice, then comes i believe its level 8, when enemies get homing lightning speed insta-kill rockets. sold it. gamestop was a better option than a broken controller and a snapped game disc lol
I can never call myself a hardcore gamer because I could not handle that game ( -.0')

God of War on God mode, and especially God of War 2 on Titan mode...couldn't beat Ares part 2 on GoW1 on God and couldn't make it past the first translator in GoW2 on Titan

Unreal tournament 3 on insane. I mean without glitching your way to the final boss on casual.
It's impossible. They get near perfect accuracy, double health and double damage.
So any close quarters map is impossible because they pick up the link gun then laser you to death within 0.1 nanoseconds of you seeing them.
Oh yeah, and they can choose where to spawn, so say you have the flag, and killed 2 enemies getting it out of their base. They now will spawn in front of you continuously with a 5 hit kill gun, to such a pace that you'll have to kill them 7 times EACH walking down a 6 meter corridor. And it's all corridor. And your allies suck so badly they basically say "Here, have a free flag and shoot me in the head." to every enemy that comes anywhere near your base. Finally, the enemies travel in packs, so if you kill one, you'll immediately be killed by the other one. Or two. Or three. then if you survive this long, they'll all spawn around you and kill you instantly.

Am I the only one that thinks Ninja Gaiden 2 wasn't THAT difficult? I thought the original presented more of a challenge

No one's mentioned it yet? Seriously?

The Water Temple from OoT. Everything's a breeze for the entire game, and then BAM! Lowering/raising water levels, going all the way to the clothing menu to change into your iron boots, and worst of all, being able to get yourself stuck forever if you do things wrong with absolutely no warning that such a thing was even possible.

Still haven't beaten it.
indeed

ninja gaiden. i cant get past the second boss. yes i suck but on the other hand i played it only for a week at a relative house and never played it again. a game i did beat however was kh2. sephiroth fight in proud mode. that bonus boss has been arguably the hardest boss fight in video game history as said by game informer and g4 tv as gamespot a few years back. even ppl who maxed out all their stats and weapons got there asses handed to them. the forums were blazing and g4 responded about 1 week after the game came out directly with a video telling you how to do it and even they said at a certain part you of the fight you are pretty much on your own. it was just that infamous

i must be weird. it was the ONE game i couldnt play!! freakin' ghost recon. FREAKIN GHOST RECON!!! COULDNT KILL THE STUPID TANK! must be me. no one else had trouble. it was the only game, i could play pretty much any other game forever.
The first one, or the second? If its the first, I think you can outflank the tank via a back alley, and use the rocket launcher on the rear. Just wait till you get to the final level:
A guy in a helicopter gunship, armed with missiles that lock on to you in about 5 seconds. One hit, you're history. No explosive weapons, you have to run around fixed machine guns and spray a few rounds before legging it.
If its the second game... I'm thoroughly in agreement, that first tank is a bullshit sandwich. Not helped of course of friendly NPCs with the intellectual capacity of the average goldfish.
