Hmm maybe that console(forgot it's name; the one in witch you use the internet to connect to a super PC) could revitalize PC gaming, because yeah, PC's are loosing ground to the console, still I could never play an RTS or FPS on the console, it just feels odd.
OnLive? That thing uses a gamepad too.

One question, how many consoles have died in the time that PC gaming has being in the processes of dying?
That doesn't make as much sense as you think. You can't upgrade consoles that's why they "die" but most of the time we get new consoles to replace the old ones.

Better question; how many PC setups have died between 1st Gen and 7th Gen (ie: now)?

What people are often very, very wrong about PCs is they assume the PC is some single entity. It is not. I'm on my 4th PC at the moment, with the last three being disbanded as hopelessly obsolete. Trying to run a modern PC game on, say, my second PC would be rather like trying to run Metal Gear Solid 4 on the PSX... only with fires and the sound of screaming metal.

When Consoles become obsolete, they bring out a brand new one and say "that was the GamePlayer X. This new one is the GamePlayer Ultra X, and is a whole new machine."
When PCs become obsolete, you buy a new PC. It is just as different to your old one as your new console is to your old one, but you still claim it is the same machine. That is not the case.
The difference with PC is that you have a choice. If you want to keep on playing X-Com on your 486 then you can do so and if game makers think that you are a good market for a new game they can make one that will run on your PC. If you want to upgrade every month then game makers can decide if they want to make a game for you. With consoles the platform holder can close up shop one day and prevent any new game being released. You get new hardware when they say you can get new hardware.

Considering I can play Starcraft on any new (Windows) computer out of the box, I'd say that platform has been around for a while.

I dunno. How much sense do you think I think that I was making?

Uhm. No. You buy a new GPU and a CPU (maybe). Recommended memory has been 2GB for like 3 years already, especially for Vista. CPU? I'm still using a Dual Core E2160. Only my GPU is great, a 9800GT overclocked. I can run Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Bioshock and so on on Medium/Max, and that looks much better than on Xbox 360.

Maybe it doesn't look better than PS3, but I would rather get a new Quad CPU, two new HDDs with 1TB total and a power supply for more overclocking... And it still will cost a bit less than a new PS3.

Oh, and games are twice as expensive on consoles as they are on PC. Prototype on PC = 100-120PLN. On consoles? I bet it'll be 220-250 PLN. No point in buying them over a PC version.

No, if it does, I think it will be because of Piracy. Not it being a real problem and bankrupting developers, but the developer's perception that piracy is all consuming on PC, and thus turning to consoles.
This is my biggest concern, that if PC's were to die out as a gaming platform it wouldn't be anything to do with technology, or what platform is easier to code for, or gamepads and small monitors.

It would be because of game publishers / developers making bad decisions and seeing the PC platform as a bad investment a second class customer.

Seeing how hard it is for indie developers to find a place in the gaming market most decent games in a year come from the big developers and it seems that they prefer consoles as a platform (apart from the likes of Blizzard and Bethesda oh and Valve can't believe I forgot them been a while since HL2 Ep2). The DLC, better support, regular patches and bad ports from console to PC all point towards this. You only have to look at the websites of major games companies to see people with PC's struggling and then deciding not to buy anymore games from the company, I myself bought and XBox 360 so that I could get the DLC for GTA and PoP.

Now TV's are hi-def and consoles are becomming more and more capable I can see companies moving away from PCs.

On the other hand, as consoles become more capable, maybe PC's and consoles wont kill each other and will instead become one... that would be very zen; though many people wouldn't like locked hardware (myself included).

I would get a 360 only if I wanted to shoot myself in the foot. The console wasn't even delivered prematurely, it was practically aborted out of the womb of microsoft, dressed up and called the new best thing to have. Naturally if the console is like that then games don't have much hope either since the acorn doesn't fall far from the oak tree. I'm surprised console gaming is still alive with the atrocious mistakes made in the current generation, and I mean by all parties.

PC gaming will never die, however consoles are now almost equal, but many PC gamers are little babies and won't admit it. Though really, consoles are morphing into PCs themselves, and eventually there will be almost no difference anyways.

What the fuck are you talking about?

It's the consoles that will die out.
With the technological progress come two things:
Everyone needs a PC
Consoles are getting more expensive.

There is no logic in buying a separate pricey device that does the same fucking thing as the PC, but has no productive use. The only reason why consoles haven't gone extinct yet is the fact that people used to like playing on their TV's instead of tiny monitors and that the developers didn't make pad-reliant games on PCs. And...
You can plug a pad into a PC

I see the future of gaming as people playing MMOs on laptops.
I'm inclined to agree, but I think it will be a long while yet.

As much of a PC fanboy as I am, I can't claim that PCs are more convenient.
As long as console makers remember convenience, they'll survive. If they become as complex to setup and get playing as PC games (as simple as PC gamin is to those who can be bothered to learn, it's a big step from console to PC level complexity), then consoles will die.

Think of the scenario: Kid wants a games machine. If you're a parent, what will you buy them? They won't have the concentration for a PC, so you'll buy a console (and they're cheaper overall. Though a PC may be cheaper if you include a TV in the price of a console, it'll be more expensive, but most people will have a TV anyway and won't buy a new one for the console).
(but if I was a parent, I'd just throw my old PC spare parts at them and let them build an older PC. But that's just me)

If consoles continue to get more expensive though, this will change- parents will go for the cheaper one, and if the cost of the PS3 on release is anything to go by compared to previous consoles, it won't be long.

Also, reading back this argument, it's crap and kind of all over the place. Whatever.

I love both console and PC gamin and I doubt its on its way out not with titles like Dawn of war 2 and Sims 3 coming out.

he support and knowledge it will just work and potential for yet more 360 exclusive content on the console is hard to argue against.
You know what's also hard to argue against? The sales reports saying that despite all the naysayers, the pc is still growing.

Remember how the NES was supposed to completely annihilate pc gaming?

I have to say that PC gaming is definately not dying

However, gamingshops are doing their best to assist with the down fall. So many gaming shops have really scaled back their PC sections to what is now a joke section all-in-all.
It seems that all they stock is what just got released and too many bopxes for coming soon.

and what makes it worse is that gaming shops refuse to drop prices on PC games half the time!!!! (I still haven't bought gears of war cause its selling for bloody 80$. give me a break!!!!)

So next time you go games shopping, tell the game stores to screw themselves and say that they are the reason PC gaming SEEMS to be dying out.

I strongly dissagree.

Pc's can run most console games.

+ no joystick will ever be as easy to use as keyboard + mouse.

Uhm. Use Steam (if you are from the US/England), Direct2drive or any other online shops to buy games.

Last time I checked, Gears of War 1 is 60 PLN, which is about $18.

PC gaming has pushed forward all other gaming. The following genres on PC will NEVER be matched on a console:

FPS
RTS
RPG
