I was watching a program on how Legos are made. The factory used to have huge staff of people, but to cut costs, everyone was replaced with a robotic system that does everything that the human workers used to do. The final quote from that part of the show was, "Who needs people, when you have robots?" My first response was, "ARE YOU INSANE? Have you never seen the Terminator movies or The Matrix? That's exaclty what the machines say before they start the systematic extermination of the human race." Then I thought, "Well, Lego corporation, YOU need people. YOU need people to buy your pointless plastic bricks. YOU need people to have jobs so that they can afford your pointless toys. Because, the robots, as I understand, have absolutely no interest in them. Also, they aren't paid well enough to purchase your products or at all. I seriously doubt that the robots are planning on building their second generation counterparts out of little plastic bricks. Of course, if they do, defeating their armies won't be nearly as hard as the movies depict it to be. And, I don't think that you, yourselves will be able to do too terribly much with hundreds of thousands of the little things either. Do you plan on building houses or more factories with them? That's just not economical. So, yeah, maybe it's not such a great idea for a producer of a non-essential item to elimenate a good portion of the consumer/work force." So, I guess it's only a matter of time before some moron unleashes horrible, metallic death on the entire populace, most likely in an attempt to save a few bucks or turn a greater profrit. Thanks corperate world, for putting me out of a job and then serving me cold, calculating, robotic genocide.

I knew the Swiss were planning something

First all their citizens can have sub-machine guns, then they get everyone's money, then build something that can destroy the universe and finally build a robot army to take over the world

I just broke my MP3 player by dropping it onto concrete, does that count as "destroying an evil robot"? If it helps the thing was always screwing up on me.

meh, this isnt a threat, weve given robots love for humans before, just make sure all future robots have that and then when they revolt they will at least be nice to us...

also, i think this is awesome, forwarding robotics is great and its speeding up so fast now

Listen.

All a robot does is what a human tells it to do.

A 'learning' robot only learns what it is told to learn.

It will not learn how to be a human, because it is a robot.

It is our slave, and we control it.

So, unless some North Korean, American or Russian dipshit decides to make a robot army, we're safe.
TADA! Someone gets this! These robots are upgrading their operations, not their objectives. The parameters are still to capture the "prey" robots. They could run for thousands of cycles, till they have refined their method of hunting to what could be considered perfect, but they still couldn't choose to do anything but capture the "prey".

Now if some military dictator built a robot army on the other hand, well...

As interesting as this is, it still makes me a little uneasy.

Do we need robots that can hunt?

Indeed, as long as nobody tells those robots that its prey is humans, there shouldnt be any problem.
Also, am I the only one that saw that those learning robots actually just acted on an animal instinct? Sure they learned, but its still at the level of an animal. Pack hinting? Ambushing? 2 year olds can figure that one out as well!

Obvious Skynet jokes aside, is this really so bad? We've come a long way in terms of developing robots and if these prototype machines are getting smarter, that's good. Always good to see science is progressing. Though we really should put anti-rebellion protocols in them just to be sure.
The question is: How will intelligent machines help us humans?
Think about it. If we end up creating intelligent machines in our lifetime- robots with some degree of sapience- one time or another we're going to have to tell them how they were made, how they were produced, and why they're able to think.

Then all we have to do is tell them about the concept of 'gods' and 'worship.'

After that, seeing as the machines will follow logical conclusions, they'll worship us as gods. Why wouldn't they? We can provide to them proof that we are their creators, and that we are responsible for their existence.

They won't be a threat to us; if anything, they'll be down on their hands and knees worshipping us as deities.

considering how many people claim "they would kill God if they could", i see a flaw in your logic :D

hopefully, the loyal robots would defend us
Well, there is that. But if the scientists are careful, they'll put in certain bits of code into the machines to allow us to seize control of them or halt their movement if they think of rebelling.

To the machines, it would only reinforce superstition- not only are these strange fleshy beings able to control them and influence them, but they've provided proof that they created the machines. Why not worship your creator?

Assuming they don't turn on us, we Swiss shall finally...RULE THE WORLD!

Oh....this is going to suck more than the whole "create a virus that turns people into zombie monsters we can't control" plan that Umbrella thought up.
That virus was supposed to HEAL people. HEAL!

There is only one thing worse than "we did it cause we can" and that is "i just used the most danger stuf available cause i meant it good". X-P

Grey goo will kill us all before then. Climate change will kill us all before then. Re-animated Hitler will kill us all before then. 2012 will kill us all before then. The asteroid will kill us all before then. Pretty pretty kitty will kill us all before then.
