When Matt Smith announced last weekend that he would bow out as Doctor Who in the Christmas special, many fans hoped that the BBC would use the opportunity to replace him with a woman or a black actor.
They are, however, likely to be disappointed, as Mandrake can disclose that the role of the 12th Time Lord has been offered to Rory Kinnear.
"He has been offered the part and we are waiting to hear if he will accept," says my man in the Tardis. "He is the perfect choice."

I have seen Rory Kinnear in Richard II on stage and he was brilliant. If he accepts, he would the best actor to ever have taken the role. This guy is on course for a knighthood in about 30 years time and is a lead RSC actor.

He can't be The Doctor, his hair isn't crazy enough!

Well ok, Christopher Eccleston didn't have crazy hair, or Peter Davison, or Sylvester McCoy, but come on, The Doctor should have crazy hair!

I'll give you that the 1st, 4th and 6th Doctor had crazy hair but the others were just of their time. Believe it or not there where plenty of people that had the same haircut as the 2nd 3rd Dr at the time.

Don't really watch Who excluding a few episodes but this guy seems really for dark compared to the others. Still, wait and see.

Looks alright to me. I'm glad he's a bit older, the show could use a good change in dynamic. I loved Matt and David, but I was worried the role was going to permanently become a younger man's role. I was hoping for either old or not white (or both), and this guy fits the bill.

Thank god they aren't keeping the 'quirky' theme they've been aiming for. Matt Smith drove me away from the series. Hasn't Doctor Who run out of regenerations though?

I'll be happy if he accepts. I wanted an older doctor more than I wanted a female, particularly.

With how fast and loose they play with thier continuity? Especially given the the regeneration limit hasn't been mentioned in the rivived series (that I'm aware of), The Doctor will only ever run out of regenerations if the BBC kill the show for good, which I can't see happening any time soon.

On Topic: This could be awesome, an actual dynamic shift between Doctors would be good. Especially early in the run, Smith just seemed to similar to Tennant.

I think they've got that sorted on a few levels for the time being due to:

A- Retconning it out
B- All the Time Lords got a new cycle of regenerations at the beginning of the time war.
C- It's entirely possibly The Doctor got a new cycle for some reason, given the time lords are shown to be able to give new cycles like they did to The Master. Plus I think Rassilon had unlimited regenerations didn't he?

Plus even going with the standard 13 regens, Smith would be the penultimate one, so still one left.

I'm hoping for a more serious or stern Doctor this time round, not that I have an issue with quirkiness, it'd just be a nice contrast between the new one and Smith, and to some degree Tennant's quirkiness.

He has avoided comedy roles because his father was best known for his comedy appearances.

This actor is fantastic. The best example of his talent is when he was the Prime Minister having sex with a pig.

That's "The Doctor," not "Doctor Who." Anyway, I was hoping for a woman or someone not caucasian, or both. Would have been interesting. Or at least someone old, like the very first Doctor.

I thought they were only just starting to look for Smith's replacement?

Anyway, if this is true then... we'll have to see. I like the guy's work, but he's never struck me as particularly Doctor-ish. I'd give him a chance of course, I'd love for someone to completely surprise me by being brilliant.

I still want Mos Def as a the Doctor after seeing him as Ford Prefect. I mean come on, the character was basically the Doctor already and he nailed it.

OT: I'm up for pretty much anything, but although I liked Tennant and Smith, I would like it if they got a more sarcastic older Doctor, but that's just me.

In original series canon he has two left including this one, but the writers are almost certainly going to retcon this.

OT I think this guy looks good. Love his voice.
