He looks like he'd make a fine choice - different enough from Smith (and Tennant) that they're not just giving us more of the same, without being so 'radical' that the traditionalists will have fits.

But this is all rather iffy.

There was a rumour going around that the BBC would make an announcement on Saturday to preempt one of the Sunday papers, who had the new name. This rumour gained enough traction that the BBC made an official announcement on their twitter that they wouldn't be making an official announcement that day, (oh, you know what I mean...) and that the process had only just started.

So either the Telegraph is completely wrong, in which case expect the BBC to dismiss this over the next day or two, or the Beeb is playing it really really cool, which would be entirely at odds with the half assed hysteria that's characterised the Doctor Who hype machine this year.

I really doubt this guy is the next Doctor.

With how fast and loose they play with thier continuity? Especially given the the regeneration limit hasn't been mentioned in the rivived series (that I'm aware of), The Doctor will only ever run out of regenerations if the BBC kill the show for good, which I can't see happening any time soon.

On Topic: This could be awesome, an actual dynamic shift between Doctors would be good. Especially early in the run, Smith just seemed to similar to Tennant.
Plus, there is the fact that the Doctor Fought in the time war where many parties got a fresh set of regenerations because. . . well because they could?

While The Daily Telegraph is normally a fairly reliable newspaper, you should take that report with a pinch of salt.

Having said that, he could be really good in the role.

The timing on this, combined with what people have been saying, seems very wrong. They made it sound like they'd only just started looking. But then, there have been a lot of highly accurate leaks recently and it's possible they're trying to damage control so that it can be a surprise

Thank god they aren't keeping the 'quirky' theme they've been aiming for. Matt Smith drove me away from the series. Hasn't Doctor Who run out of regenerations though?
In original series canon he has two left including this one, but the writers are almost certainly going to retcon this.

OT I think this guy looks good. Love his voice.
I have high hopes that it's going to be a justification instead of merely a retcon

Do we know why Matt Smith resigned from the show? I would really like to know what happened.

I haven't really seen him in anything so I don't know if he's a good choice :/

Well as it stands,12 hours on, the BBC have neither confirmed or denied the story and the bookies aren't taking any more bets on Kinnear. I have no idea if its true or not. Personally, I would have thought that Kinnear would cost a few quid more than Smith and Tenant at the start of their runs but Ecclestone was already a lead actor when he got the job. So it could work either way.

And he's not exactly a bad actor.

Can't say I've ever seen or heard of this guy before, but if his Hamlet is anything to go on.
Go watch the hollow crown they are both in it and see what you think.

Well, when Smith started he had a few minor roles to his name and now he is currently shooting a movie with Eva Mendes and directed by Ryan Gosling. Its really rather simple, he is getting better offers now. 4 years is about the average for a Dr anyway, only Tom Baker went longer at 7.

Kinnear best TV work was as Henry Bolingbroke in Richard II, you might want to watch that.

I don't see how making the Doctor black or female would change the dynamic very well at all. It's not like show is lacking strong representation in those areas. The race of the doctor should define him, and the gender would throw up too many questions (especially among the "initiated" who haven't quite reached "super fan").

It'd be nice to get a serious guy at the helm, one who can have fun, but is ultimately about business. The wacky hipster thing is something that Tennant did, got audience approval for, and was replaced with the intention to harvest more of the same fans. Frankly I loved Eccleston, think he did a sterling job, and would enjoy seeing more in the ilk

If he accepts, he would the best actor to ever have taken the role.
Well, John Hurt will technically have taken on the role.

I'm excited.
John Hurt is a red herring :p He isn't actually taking on the lead role.

OT:
Oh, that makes me feel a little better about the whole Smith leaving thing. I'll miss him, but he isn't gone yet, so it's fine.

What? But this can't be the doctor! He looks far too old for the 13-15-year old girls on tumblr and deviantart!

Hm. He's a good actor, but I just can't see him as the Doctor. He's just too... Normal. He looks like an extra from The Office.

Plus, this all sounds fishy to me. The beeb usually keep it much more under wraps than this, colour me skeptical.

Don't really watch Who excluding a few episodes but this guy seems really for dark compared to the others. Still, wait and see.
He's doing Hamlet, dude. How bright and chipper did you expect?

Similarly, David Tennant did MacBeth. No "wibbly wobbly, timey-wimey" there.

Though I thought his performance was godawful, but that's another story for another day.

Honestly, I thought that's what the BBC was going for.

"Better offers" seem to kill off a lot of shows, so they should probably be thankful the Doctor has a built-in mechanism to deal with it.

I'm really not sure how.

I mean, honestly, I don't really care if we ever see a black or female Doctor, but I also don't see how it'd be a big deal if it happened.

Not really saying it's a bad thing, just surprised me considering Tennant and Smith's performances.
But now that you mention it, yeah, I forgot about Tennant doing Hamlet. I should check that out sometime.

Looks alright to me. I'm glad he's a bit older, the show could use a good change in dynamic. I loved Matt and David, but I was worried the role was going to permanently become a younger man's role. I was hoping for either old or not white (or both), and this guy fits the bill.
I now have images of Morgan Freeman playing the doctor...
And I'm okay with that

If this guy is not taking the role then there is still hope that Dylan Moran could play a curmudgeonly Doctor who just wants people to leave him in his book shop...I mean TARDIS to read and drink? Just imagine it, Bill Bailey and Tamsin Greig could be the companions. I'd watch it.

Nope. Kinnear has virtually denied being offered the job, and is frankly sick of the rumors.
Somehow I suspected this might not be totally true... Whether I'm happy about that, I still have no clue. Thinking about it though I saw an article saying Dominic Monaghan was interested. Now THAT I'd like to see.

How's he a Red Herring? He's playing the part of a Doctor that went against his own code or whatever, he may not be playing the lead, but he will be playing a doctor. Even if he doesn't refer to himself as such.
Technicalities aside, he isn't the lead role. You sounded like you thought he was going to be the next lead rather than just another character. xP double misunderstanding.
