CRPG was used to differentiate video games from Pen and Paper RPGs like D&D, Shadowrun, Call of Cthulhu, World of Darkness, etc.
I love the Infinity Engine games and Fallout 1 & 2 but I wouldn't recommend them to someone new to these style of games. I advise you play something newer and easier to get into as not to scare you off forever. I haven't played Pillars of Eternity yet but I've heard nothing but good things and it's meant to be a pretty good introduction to this kind of games.
For a game I have played and highly recommend, Shadowrun: Returns/Shadowrun: Dragonfall. Other people have recommended it already and with good reason. It's cyberpunk so think Ghost in the Shell or Deus Ex but it also has fantasy elements like magic and elves and stuff. Combat in it plays like XCOM: Enemy Unknown if you are familiar with that.
