CRPG was used to differentiate video games from Pen and Paper RPGs like D&D, Shadowrun, Call of Cthulhu, World of Darkness, etc.

I love the Infinity Engine games and Fallout 1 & 2 but I wouldn't recommend them to someone new to these style of games. I advise you play something newer and easier to get into as not to scare you off forever. I haven't played Pillars of Eternity yet but I've heard nothing but good things and it's meant to be a pretty good introduction to this kind of games.

For a game I have played and highly recommend, Shadowrun: Returns/Shadowrun: Dragonfall. Other people have recommended it already and with good reason. It's cyberpunk so think Ghost in the Shell or Deus Ex but it also has fantasy elements like magic and elves and stuff. Combat in it plays like XCOM: Enemy Unknown if you are familiar with that.

Avernum.

Most of those are kind of old though, I haven't been into the genre so much of recent years.
Avernum was based on the older Exile series, and there's a new Avernum series being made (they are up to 2 so far), only with the same names and, IIRC, much the same graphics as the first Avernum.

So, there are 3 versions of the first 2 games in the series, which might seem a bit odd.

Yeah, I said Avernum cause that's the current name (and Exile's graphics were literally MS-Paint even if you find that version). I had it back when it was Exile though. Even made several campaigns for Blades of Exile.

Oh really? Are they still around? What were they called?

Currently replaying "Nephil's Gambit" on BoE.

Try Arcanum it's like Fallout1/2 but it has magick and you can switch between real time and turn based cobat
Good lord sir, are you trying to turn him off of CRPGs before he even gets started? Don't get me wrong I love Arcanum, but that is not baby's first CRPG

I'm gonna echo the other people saying do Shadowrun first. Seriously neat little CRPG that is nice to newer players. Dragonfall is even better.
