I am more than willing to accept the idea that this is just me, but I seemed to be so often ruined by seeing the best example of something first, especially in gaming.

For a non-gaming example, the first Star Wars fan fiction lightsaber battle I ever saw was . . . Ryan vs. Dorkman.

"This is awesome!" I said to myself, and I ran off to go find other great battles . . only to find nothing but crap. I was ruined by RvD.

Now back to gaming, I did what I consider to be the best DLC for Fallout 3 first, Mothership Zeta, followed by a close second (probably a tie) of Lookout Point, then the Pitt (which I hated) and Anchorage last (which was only good when you left the sim and got the good stuff).

Now I feel I'm doing it again with New Vegas. I happened across Old World Blues first, and I'm liking it a lot. Then I hear how it's probably the best one of the three that are currently out, and now I'm dreading Dead Money, thinking I popped my cherry on the best DLC only to go to crappy ones next.

Does this stuff happen to you guys?

EDIT: Oh, and about Mothership Zeta being my favorite, I had zero bug issues and I came out from that SET. Tons of caps in the form of those cyrstals, and the alien disintgrator was one of my top three weapons.

I also enjoyed the ship to ship combat, as brief and non-interactive as it was.

played time-splitters before any other shooter, I miss making WWII germans V robots where the only weapon is baseball-bat, now I have to play online or campaign in games that are all about realism rather than fun, I mean, story is important but how much plot do you need in a shooter?

Can't think of any video game examples personally. I can play other games and appreciate them, even if they're not better than what is currently out there. But I'm suprised you think Mothership Zeta is the best DLC for 3, considering most people think that it's the worst, or tied with Operation Anchorage. Never finished Zeta, ran into a crippling bug really early on and couldn't finish it. I really liked Old World Blues, but I also really liked all of the other DLC, which most people don't. (It's usuaully one or the other, or neither with people *shrug)

I haven't played Old World Blues, but the other DLC was fucking terrible, Dead money had to be the most boring thing I've ever played, it had about 3 different enemies and everywhere looked identical, it only really hotted up when you got in the casino, but by then you're 90% done.

Honest Hearts was better, but I did it in about an hour, which was horrifying considering I'd paid money for that.

Now what I said above ^ is the answer I would have given, had you not said Mothership Zeta was the best DLC...

I know what you mean man, Once you go black you never go back....

I can't believe I hadn't tried black coffee before it's so much better. ;)

This happens to me a lot when ever I play a sequel to a game first before I play the original I try to avoid it but it sometimes happens.

By the way did you know that there was a sequel to Ryan vs Dorkman

Yes, I was well aware. Ryan also has two out against a guy named Brandon, not quite as good as RvD, but still enjoyable. Very few things without Ryan or Dorkman in them are really any good.

I had no bug issues with Zeta, and I came out of that SET. Tons of caps, great weaponry, tons of other tech. It was awesome.

The Total War series has this problem for me. I played Rome first and now no other will do.
Medieval II is better in my opinion. Although Rome (despite being extremely unrealistic) does have a really awesome old school charm that makes it one of my favorites in the series.

Have you tried Empire or Napoleon? A lot of people didn't like them, but if you look in the right places you can find some really awesome mods for them (DarthMod for Empire, the Blue and the Gray, LME for Napoleon).

I feel like a masterpiece game can do this to an entire genre for a good, long while. Once something has been superbly executed, and spawned a dozen imitators, it could just ruin the whole field for me. I can't make a statement like that without naming names, so...Alpha Centari, Rome: TW, SF III Alpha, RE4, Torment, Gears, ME2, and L4D turned me off to other titles in the 4X, RTS, fighting, survival horror, RPGs, 3PS, RPGs, and coop FPS genres respectively for a good, long while.

It comes back eventually, but how do you follow up on an experience like crushing Sister Miriam Godwinson?

I did this when I played Oblivion for the first time. Did the Shivering Isles first, and after doing that nothing in the game ever came close to the fun I had there. Closest was the Thieve's Guild, but even that was meh by comparison. As a result I've never been able to play Oblivion again without feeling cheated.

Another close example but not nearly as bad is doing the DLC for Mass Effect 2. I did Lair of the Shadow Broker first, and holy hell that was amazing. By comparison the other two didn't seem as good. I still enjoyed them, don't get me wrong, but they weren't as good as that one. Overlord came pretty close though.

Age of Empires 2 was my first ever RTS. I've now given up on the genre completely because I could find nothing that compared.

Civilisation (with an S not a Z, Americans!) series. Played Civ 5 on my boyfriend's PC, then went out and got CivRev, because I don't have a gaming PC.

It's a damn good game, but Civ 5 is just so much more in-depth and involving that I can never truly enjoy CivRev any more. I like it well enough, but it just comes across as too "casual", despite how much I hate that word.

The second Ryan vs Dorkman ruined the first one for me. Fortunately I saw the first one first, so I got to enjoy it for a bit.

But the game itself is spelled with a 'z', therefore it is a title/name, and not susceptible to nuances of languange.

OT: I played Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires years ago, and can't really get into any of the others in the series. It was just so damn good.

I thought the Mage questline was pretty cool. The Knights of Nine also, since it gives you what appears to be the best armor in the game so far. I'm nearing level 40 right now.

Shivering Isles was awesome. I played a bit of the game, wasn't really interested in it, so I tried the Shivering Isles. It was great, and when I came back, it just didn't feel the same. The world in the Shivering Isles reminded me quite a bit of the world in Morrowind, in a good way.

Sort of a retroactive case, but Assassin's Creed II ruined the first game for me. After playing AC:II and Brotherhood; I can't go back to the first one, it just seems so damn primitive and slow and tedious.

And I guess there's Saints Row 2, which I played before the first one, but I still find the first to be very playable, just not as good.

I'm not saying it's the best by all means (although it is for me), but, I haven't been able to get into any FPS since Unreal Tournement.

I used to be in a team that did quite well in the UT leagues in the late 90's early 2000's (when I had time to play) and loved the community and little rivalries we built up over the years.

I've tried all the latest FPS games and the multiplayer parts and they just don't have that same appeal to me.

Hell, that ruins all lightsaber battles including the in-film ones.

I played Gears of War 2 before Gears of War 1. It's hard to play through a prequel for nothing more than the story, when you already know what happens.

And I watched the '97 Batman and Robin film before any of the others in that 'series'. It ruins them all, knowing what they'll later become (and Batman/Batman Returns are actually pretty good!)
