Kinect is a good peripheral, why are people bitching?
My initial reaction is that some people are just lazy and do not want to have to get up and move around. However, I think gamers who are very sensitive about their hobby, people who?s parents called it a waste of time and told them to go outside, and who were called lazy, perhaps fat and useless by their peers, get very defensive at the suggestion by the games industry that they should do something which has negative connotations for them.
I think these gamers view the casual consumer of games as a threat, and fear that no more games which they grew up on and love will be produced. As a result, they attack anything and everything related to casual gaming, and insult the majority of the population because they know the traditional gamer is in the minority and that the game companies do not need gaming traditionalists to make a profit. So this creates a great deal of fear and animosity towards new things and casual games. Anything popular is viewed as a threat to gaming, and brutally attacked (such as Call of Duty).Kinect is viewed as Microsoft?s answer to the Wii, and the Wii has no hardcore, traditional games, and so a hardcore game joining hands with Kinect is viewed as an extreme threat.
I think the anger is also because Bioware is seen as one of, or the strongest, root of RPG traditional gaming, the one place where ?we,? the traditional gamers can go regardless of what the rest of the world is doing. For this reason, Bioware joining hands with Kinect is viewed as a major assault on hardcore gaming, or even the beginning of the end. This combined with Bioware making a draw prize which was only available in the majority of the United States and Bioware being bought by EA, creates the perception that this is the beginning of the end, or even that hardcore gaming is already over, and ?we? have already lost to the casual masses.
All that from being able to stand up, have a lot of fun getting exercise, while saving the galaxy from the Reapers. That's human nature when we feel threatened. I?ve been waiting for this for half my life. Thank you Bioware! Please DO NOT make the controls finicky and Wii like. As for the delay, DEFINITELY worth it if it works well.
