http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-04-08/microsoft-said-to-adopt-amd-chips-for-next-xbox-console.html

Do to the rumored change in architecture, Xbox 360 discs won't be compatible with the new system. I can't say that I'm surprised at all, but this coupled with the rumored always on internet connection requirement will keep me from getting one. It is cool that console makers are trying to use x86 architecture which is easier to code for, but I've got limited space and don't really want to have to hook up a bunch of different machines to play an older game.

What does the Escapist think about this if it turns out to be true?

Will you still buy the Nextbox, or does turn you away from the console?

I like how every rumor about the Xbox has been bad. Consistent, but bad. That alone is enough for me to say "fuck it" and wait for the actual conference

So was every single rumor about the PS4 and the vast majority of them turned out to be false. Its because negative news gets far more hits then anything positive.

Rumour: Bill Gates is actually a turkey disguised as a spy, disguised as Bill gates.

This has precisely as much validity as that bloomberg article.

As such, it's better to just wait for the reveal and stop bothering with rumours.

I've grown to accept the fact that only Nintendo cares about backwards compatibility...

Really, as long as it isn't always on, or it does allow pre-owned games, I'll probably get it. But those are probably true, so I'm probably gonna avoid the Nextbox.

Ironically, most ps4 rumors turned out to be true but they weren't the good or the bad ones. The touch screen controller, focus on streaming, I think the 8 gigs of ram started as a rumor.

On topic, personally I would have been surprised if the Nextbox was backwards compatible. I personally think both Sony and Microsoft should release a backwards compatible version with a price jump. If everyone wants it as bad as they say, then they'll pay and $100-$200 for them. I think I'll just keep my ps3 on hand. I still plug in my Gamecube from time to time

As for the Nextbox though, I'm not sure about some of the rumors. The dev kit is always online but does that really prove anything? Doesn't it make since for Microsoft to keep an eye on their prototype hardware? I'll wait for the conference too... Where they'll talk about how its a Windows 8 compatible media box with a bunch of nongaming related shit on it no one wants

Can we please just stop reporting rumours, or at least so many of them?

I'm half expecting to see the next thread title about this Xbox to be

"Rumour: Xbox shits on your chest whenever it isn't powered up" or perhaps "Rumour: New Xbox teabags you during your sleep"

At this stage it would be a surprise if it WAS backwards compatible.

Don't forget, the PS4 isn't either, and no re-buying your PS3 games to stream via Gaikai doesn't count.

I think if Xbox does have some limited backward compatibility like they did the last time then it will give them a leg up on Sony. They really need that too. I am not sold on any console at this point. I getting the vibe I should just make a small PC tower for steam and hook it up to my TV.

Changing to the x86 architecture pretty much kills Backwards compatibility. We know this. However, the Xbox and Xbox 360 suffered from a similar issue, and we still got some degree of backwards compatibility.

So, it could go either way.

I'm still waiting on the poison darts in the abdomen rumor.

Well Microsoft is supposed to unveil it in MAY, so Ill reserve continued judgement until it is officially shown to the public.
Actually the preview in May is just a rumor as of now too. Microsoft hasn't confirmed or denied it.

I wish Microsoft would at least confirm or deny the worst bits. Everyone (here anyways) knows that a change in architecture will make backwards compatibility go away, so that isn't that upsetting in and of itself because it was kind of expected. But if the always online bit is just a fabrication, they are only hurting themselves by not coming out and saying that it was just a rumor. Heck, if they denounced it, it could create a lot of positive buzz before the official announcement of the console...

Rumour: The next Xbox will be made of cake and offer free handjobs during loading screens.

Petty humour aside, rumours are rumours: Great to discuss, but almost inevitibly incoreect on some, if not all, levels.

This one could quite easily have been sourced form some guy on a forum similar to this dropping false hints purely because he is well aware of the power of Chinese whispers on the Internet scale.

Hell, I don't even know how this rumour will work with the Blu-Ray they are implementing.

Unless you yourself work for Microsoft and are part of the team planning the Next Xbox, I think the Bloomberg article has more credibility. Not to mention a lot of the content of the article are things that people already guessed around the time the PS4 was revealed, but now we have "people with knowledge of the matter" confirming it. Could turn out to be bogus, but I'm inclined to believe it at this point.

Wait, AMD is incompatible with BluRay? My laptop has a blu-ray drive in it and has x86 architecture...

That is the cost of being the second... Now, and until they say something official, Microsoft has to play catch up with the PS4 announcement.

I think they are only hurting themselves keeping this level of confidentiality. Even when they haven't officially unveiled the next xbox, we all know its coming and they will show it, at most, during E3 2013. At this point, it would mean little harm in their plans if they made some statement about all these rumors, but it would also restore some confident.

Silence gives consent...
