If it's set in New York, does that mean we can reenact the end of the original Planet of the Apes?

I wouldn't expect another game this gen... Fact is, Skyrim wasn't even supposed to be out on this gen because Bethesda know they need a new engine, and those things take ages to build.

When you say things like how good the Skyrim engine is, you betray the fact that, with respect, you know nothing about game engines. The Creation engine(Skyrim) is the Gamebryo(Morrowind onward, Fallout and a fuckton of other games) engine with a spit shine and some snow effects, and the cracks are definitely evident. Just look through the forums and see how many threads there are about Skyrim glitches/bugs/lag.

I thought I would be alright with gamings current trend to market their game engines and all the behind the scenes tech talk to the masses...
It is more then a spit shine. Rendering has been rewritten entirely, physics have been improved, and facial animation now uses the physics engine. The engine has changed a lot between games, look at morrowind compared to oblivion, oblivion compared to fallout 3, fallout 3 compared to skyrim. The Creation engine is by no means a "good" engine, but it handles consistent management of props across multiple "dimensions" far better then crytek's engine, or frostbite 2. The lag is more attributed to how the game works (move a sword on the ground, game saves it. Do it a thousand times, and your game is loading too much, hits the RAM cap, and slows down.). I would rather Bethesda stop releasing their games on PS3, rather then remove the freedom and consistency that has come to define their games.

I don't care where it's set, as long as Bethesda learns from New Vegas.
Learns what? Not to lease out their acquired franchise to the franchises original developers, who haven't made a game in a decade and are really, really shit programmers - more so than Bethesda?
To learn never to let obsidian near a computer, but let them do some the writing if they ask nicely.

I didn't know Skyrim had its own engine! Whatever direction they go with Fallout, I really hope they keep in the humor that they went for with Old World Blues, and take the linearity introduced in Lonesome Road OUT of the game.
It is called the Creation engine, bethesda built it from the modified gamebryo engine that morrowind-new vegas used.

I don't understand this line of thought. Fallout 3 was soo much better than New Vegas. I didn't even finish NV. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't anything special compared to FO3.

I'm hoping it'll be Bethesda's project.
Beyond the lack of WHOA HOLY CRAP COOL stuff in New Vegas as opposed to 3, which was actually intentional, it's difficult for me to think of a way New Vegas isn't better.

1. Far more weapons, more enemy types, more characters, more armor and clothing options, weapon mods---just more in general
2. You take full damage while in VATS now
3. Iron sights
4. Far more quests out of the box than 3 had with all expansions
5. Those quests are much better written and make more sense---no one's preoccupied with robot emancipation, converting cannibals to vampirism or rare kinds of 200-year-old soda when every day is a struggle to survive
6. People are DOING things---in New Vegas there's farms and communities and factions on missions, in 3 everyone who's not a main character is just kind of faffing about
7. New Vegas' main storyline doesn't fall apart with an 11-grade level of scientific understanding
8. New Vegas has a much better companion command system, and every companion has a detailed backstory and accompanying quest related to their history
9. Better-balanced with the different ammo types
10. Super Mutants are a community with character now, instead of being basically orcs
11. Far more branching dialogue options, and more skill checks so your character build affects more facets of gameplay
12. More ways to resolve quests in general---there's 4 factions for which you can complete the main story, all of whom have variations within them
13. Much grayer morality; none of those four factions can really be called "good" or "bad" and there are signs that even their good points could deteriorate
14. Game's smarter in general---just talk to Caesar, and compare that to any dialogue at all from 3
15. S.P.E.C.I.A.L. has been fixed a bit---you will feel the effect of lacking any one of those attributes, whereas in 3 you could easily make a sniper with 1 perception
16. You can't just max everything out and become a demigod now
17. Speech is a VERY useful skill now, used all over the place in loads of dialogues
18. Better perks---most of the ones in 3 were just skill bumps, and even the cooler-sounding ones like Lady-Killer didn't actually have many opportunities for use
19. A better sense of progression in the weapons---in 3 you used Assault rifles and combat shotguns at level 7, and you used combat shotguns and Assault rifles at level 24
20. You can only pick a perk once every other level now, so you don't become overpowered as quickly---and since the perks are better in New Vegas, it's actually a tough choice
21. Hardcore mode, which brings with it the extremely-useful Survival skill
22. Tutorial is short and you can walk away at any point during it
23. Traits are back, adding yet more personalization to each character, and the goofy stuff is in the Wild Wasteland perk so that it doesn't smack you in the face when you're trying to take the game seriously

Off the top of my head.
The obsidian did a great job at making the factions in new vegas morally grey- at least until you realize that the game considers helping one faction to be bad, and another to be good.
The game had no set up or backstory, and little character development.
The same 11th grader who can debunk fallout 3's science is running around freeside with an orbital laser designation gun.
The different ways to complete the main quest didn't matter, there might as well have been zero ways to complete the main quest considering you didn't get to play after it was over.
Fallout 3's super mutants were never orcs, they had a community, dialouge, and an objective. Just because there was only one faction of supermutants, and there goal was to kidnap and make more super mutants doesn't make them any worse then new vegas's super mutants.

I do think that new vegas is a better game, but it is important to note that obsidian built off mechanics that bethesda had to spend time making instead of developing other things. It was nice talki[fallout: new vegas has encountered a problem and needs to close]

freaking sweet, did not expect that, maybe some info about the exploits of the chosen one will be layed out in the game.

I would welcome the idea of it being set in NY. I wouldn't however like it to be set outside of the US. It just wouldn't have the same feeling to it.

If anything though, they should take their time with it, make it the best they can get it :)

Yes it does; the opening movie explains the NCR discovered the Dam and headed east. When you talk to Caesar he talks in length about the creation of the Legion and the build up to the conflict. Mr. House talks about how he saved Vegas and became the de facto ruler of Vegas. Plus all of the other minor stories such as the creation of Jacobstown, the Bitter Springs Massacre, the "founding" of the Powder Gangers and many more.

As for character development, the companions all have major development during their time with you and most of the faction leaders and major characters change depending on your interactions with them.

The same 11th grader who can debunk fallout 3's science is running around freeside with an orbital laser designation gun.

Nope, they look different and are clearly not the same person. Also is it so hard to believe that in over 2 centuries a targeting device from a solar power station may have had some scavengers snoop around, find an interesting device, discover it does "nothing" and then sell it to someone?

The different ways to complete the main quest didn't matter, there might as well have been zero ways to complete the main quest considering you didn't get to play after it was over.
I'm not entirely sure what you're saying, but it does matter considering the endings are all completely different. Not just for the initial factions involved, but every single faction, location and major character in the game. Depending on what choice you make can completely change a character's life or what happens to a particular society.

Fallout 3's super mutants were never orcs, they had a community, dialouge, and an objective. Just because there was only one faction of supermutants, and there goal was to kidnap and make more super mutants doesn't make them any worse then new vegas's super mutants.
what makes them worse is that they are a pointless addition to the game. They start off being an antagonistic force who then disappear from the story and get replaced by the Enclave. Their members are almost entirely stupid and uninteresting and their objective is similar to some medieval bandit party.

I do think that new vegas is a better game, but it is important to note that obsidian built off mechanics that bethesda had to spend time making instead of developing other things. It was nice talki[fallout: new vegas has encountered a problem and needs to close]
This particular double standard really irritates me.

Fallout 3 had plenty of bugs, so calling New Vegas out on that is pointless.

I knew New York would be one of the possibilities. It'll be very interesting to have a Fallout set in Manhattan. Central Park could be a deathtrap for radiated fauna, the subways could be perfect passages around New York, and the climax of the main storyline could be set on either the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty.
Wonder what they'll have in place for Ground Zero though. Suppose a bomb crater?

I would love to see a Fallout game set in Hong Kong, it would fill in a lot of information about the war, and let another perspective be viewed.
I am a resident of Hong Kong and I approve this message.

An unfortunate result of hanging on to the dumb "karma" system from FO3. Fortunately, you may notice that karma affects practically nothing in New Vegas, so in actual effect the whole thing remains intact.

False. Fallout 1 and 2 provide a lot of its backstory, and you get a little refresher course in the opening cinematic. The whole game's about tension between factions that has been building up for years; the story relies on previously-established narrative. If you think there's no character development you obviously didn't do any of the companion quests. Boone and Veronica in particular are much more than they seem.

There's nothing unrealistic about that. It's an experimental weapon from an abandoned facility. Some scavenging kid got ahold of it and was using it as a toy, but willing to sell it in exchange for enough caps to make all his wildest dreams come true.

What? There's a dizzying number of possible endings to the game. Are you seriously saying that a game may as well not have happened if it has a definite ending?

Their "community" consisted of standing around in groups waiting for people to come by so they could attack them. Their "dialogue" consisted of lines like "I WANT SMASH!!!" The "kidnapping people to turn them into Super Mutants" goal is lifted from Fallout 1, but the problem is that The Master abandoned that objective. It's not inconceivable that the Mutants would try and continue anyway, but then how do you explain the fact that all they do is slaughter and eat every human they encounter? How come you never see them actually turn anyone into a Mutant? Where are they doing this, anyway, and HOW, with such pitiful intellects?

Fallout 3 was roughly as buggy at release; I'm not sure why it gets a pass and NV doesn't.

At this point everything is speculation supported by oh yes the wiki that can be edited by anyone and if anyone will remember for 3 and NV was full of unsupported information that later turned out to be false, heck we don't even have an announcement that the games being developed yet let alone any specifics. It's obvious Bethesda will be the publisher, the developer is most likely going to be either Bethesda or Obsidian, the use of the creation engine seems very likely, and it'll probably be set somewhere in the U.S. for obvious reasons, thats about as far as I'd think ahead until we get some official word which may not be for some time depending on wether their looking for one more current gen release or are willing to wait the 2-3 years for the next gen consoles.

I'm pretty sure that a new Fallout game would be set in the U.S. and it'd have to be take place in a place or time period that's relatively unaffected by the previous games (No going back to D.C. or Vegas).

Denver was apparently conquered by the Legion so that's a no-go (Lanius explicitly references besieging the city). Seattle might work since there's a lot of potential for some beautiful scenery. J.E. Sawyer stated that he thinks that Louisiana would be an interesting place to see.

I do agree that the writers at Bethesda are quite poor and plots being more an excuse to run around and do shit and characters being little more than tools for quests or selling shit. That simply will not work for Fallout. Obsidian, for all their faults in programming have worthy writers capable of making interesting characters and did try to make some interesting additions.

I must admit, a more Urban themed Fallout could be interesting but I want to see how London fared in the great war (Also, cockney ghouls).

Also, thanks to what happened in Lonesome Road, I'm more interested to find out what happened to the courier before and after New Vegas.

I think the real acid test is to try out the city name and see if it sounds catchy.

Fallout: Calgary
(no. Just no.)

Fallout: Montreal
(I don't know why but I can't stop laughing and I can't understand 1/2 the NPCs)

Personally, I'd like to see a story about a Brotherhood of Steel initiate-turned-exile. That way we can fix some of the non-cannon crap that's cropped up re: the new games and the original Fallout series (esp. Fallout Tactics) in first-person format. The Brotherhood is on its way out as of New Vegas, fragmenting and dying out because of fanatical leadership, bloodline-only recruiting and techno hoarding. I wants me some Powered Armour and a main quest that's more than a set of rails that changes the map when I get bored of the quests I WANT to do. Unless, of course, that's LITERALLY the story.

Something along the lines of a lone warrior cross-crossing the country between diverging Brotherhood factions and influencing their politics and policies through his own actions a la Seven Samurai, Yojimbo or Zatoichi. Or if you prefer, The Magnificent Seven, Fistful of Dollars, or The Dirty Dozen. That would let the hero re-visit all the main Brotherhood fragments either out of the box or through DLC and spin a grand story about the death or re-invigoration (for good or ill) of a dying techno-feudal warrior tribe.

The Base storyline could even be about the California Brotherhood (and maybe the NCR) re-establishing the transcontinental Railroad in a bid to bind the Brotherhood back together before it degenerates into civil war. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Transcontinental_Railroad

I'm thinking:

Fallout: Sons of Steel
-or-
Fallout: Steel Highway

"am i the only one thinking of Alaska? snow, forests and kinds of predators to fight. I dont live there, so i dont know for certain, but isnt full of isolated towns?

plus if it was Alaska, theres the whole "month" of darkness thing to play with. I can see lots of night time only creatures coming out to play.

i didnt read all the comments so if someone did suggest Alaska my bad."

Kind of. The 'thirty days of night' thing is a misnomer- even above the Arctic Circle, there's only about a week of 'no sunrise', but there's a month-long period with only 1-2 hours of sunrise, yes.

Operation Anchorage did open it up a bit, but it wasn't 'Anchorage' (I live in Anchorage, Alaska) it was a fictional 'snow and mountains' area which we were *told* was near Anchorage, but it could have been anywhere from Colorado to the Yukon.

Remember, though- the entire basis of the Fallout series isn't 'After the Nuclear Holocaust'. It's 'After the Nuclear Holocaust, from a 1950's US Perspective'. Really, what did the average American know about other countries, back then? In the 50's, it was the Cold War, and we had Allies and Enemies, and we knew a lot of stereotypes and not much else. I can't truly imagine having Fallout in a non-US country, because there isn't much info to go on- the 1950's American pictured The Future as centered around the US, as a Shining Model of Progress, and saw everywhere else through that lens.

But.. If the game has not been announced, if the developer has not been announced. And if in august, when the developers of Skyrim were largely done, there was no-one in their gamestudios even working in pre-production. How can we know?
