So, Skyrim has just been released, meaning there is a new game to come within 1 year +. Me and some friends were talking about the next fallout, and to be brief, we talked about the following.

The new fallout is said to be set in a New York area, which I personally am really looking forward to, because going to the statue of liberty seems so fun and look amazing to play around with.

The engine is said to be Skyrim, which again sounds amazing! I cracked a joke of you coming across random strangers sitting in a house telling you 'I used to be a wanderer like you.... Then I took a bullet to the knee.'

Thats all that I can remember, if any more arises, I will update the thread.

Thoughts and opinions on these?

I cant see it set outside America, but New York would be nice, although I wonder how they'll implement skyscrapers without making everything an endless mass of stairs and hallways.

It could be fun, I was wanting somewhere in Europe but to be honest I don't think New York with the shit kicked out of it will ever get boring. If I'm unemployed by then, it's the perfect way to pass time!

It'll be Canada.

Skyrims engine involves dynamic snow, Canada was annexed in 2059. It was the site of the huge civilian suppression and could offer the most out of Skyrim's engine and Fallout universe.

New York is a stupid place to have it, we saw it in DC and Vegas (city & desert, check) and a too many bloody games have been to NYC this year and last. The only way the could cock that up more is if they turned it into a modern military shooter.

It would be cool to see the snow engine or whatever they used to make ash rain down.

Fallout:NYC would be cool but I thought I heard it was going to be in Los Angeles.

Source on the New York thing? I haven't heard a single word about Fallout 4 as of yet; just speculation based on the safe assumption that one will happen.

I REALLY hope that Obsidian develops it. If Bethesda does it, we'll get a ton of cool setpieces and fun environments for exploration, but the game's IQ will drop 70 points.

Are we finally going to see that nuclear winter that NCR troops have been longing for?

Canada would make a fair bit of sense. The only possible problem is that a lot of Fallout's vibe has to do with the ghosts of 50's Americana and optimism, and Canada obviously isn't the USA.

I was kinds hoping for the The Commonwealth (new england) due to all awesome Blade Runner/Do androids dream refereneces made about it in FO3 (mabye a few in Old world Blues). It would also act as a good staging ground to expand upon places like Canada and Europe.

Although I doubt it'll ever be outside the USA, I would love to play Fallout: Glasgow. Running around the town square with half the population trying to knife you? That happened BEFORe the nukes landed.

I don't suppose the rumours say anything about it not being made, published, or even looked at by Bethesda and their crummy engine?

I don't care where it's set, as long as Bethesda learns from New Vegas.
Learns what? Not to lease out their acquired franchise to the franchises original developers, who haven't made a game in a decade and are really, really shit programmers - more so than Bethesda?

Washington state, Seattle maybe? I just expect a 'twilight' easter egg if they set it there.

Still routing for outside the US, since the war was with the chinese in Fallout it would be nice to see one game set there, Beijing or Hong Kong.

It stands to be the only logical choice to me:-
Europe wont get a mention in this series,
The middle east has been done to death in shooters,
Russia has run out of men to spare after the last 3 CoD games,
Asia doesnt get mentioned that much, but could be an interesting premise,
South America would just become FarCry, dense jungles + dense glitching......no thanks,
Africa looks like its been nuked already, so it would just be Resident Evil 5 but first person.

I've been thinking about ways to generate power the local areas (in the vein of Hoover Dam) and I wonder if Old faithful and the city of Denver might not be an interesting place. You've got the yellowstone national park area to explore and a largish urban center in Denver that wouldn't have been too decimated by the war. It might also give a way to explore the rise to power of caesar--if memory serves, he came from the east and headed west.

New York would be fine too. I think people underestimate how big some of the buildings are--it wouldn't be three rooms and a staircase leading up/down to the net three rooms. I'd also like to see what changes they'd make in the various museums. Mole-rats could just be replaced by rat-rats and the large flying insects could be replaced by the rat-of-the-sky: pigeons. The central park zoo also offers a way to introduce some exotic mutant animals. There are the subways and, given the sadly popular representation of my former home-state, you've got the ability to take a quick trip down to the mutants at the Jersey Shore.

Given what the team has learned from FO3, NV and Skyrim, I am excited to see what will come next.

The Skyrim engine? Woohoo... wait no, it's still the 10 year old extremely buggy Gamebyro engine.
I hope they put FO4 on ice for a year or two and pick up a new engine, a tried and tested new engine that is, that some one else made.
Please Bethesda don't make your own engine, Rage went up in flames only because they went completely experimental.

I think it will be the US, probably West Coast. The writers are usually good about using previous game references, and there were a lot of them referring to the area (though the Commonwealth is also a good location, somewhere in Massachusetts.)

What worries me is designer's tendency to try to avoid everything about a previous game- even when it's *good* things. I saw too much of that in NV.

Speaking for myself, if they basically remade Fallout 3 but put it in a different place, with different names and quests, I'd buy it and play it cheerfully.

To those mentioning New York, from fallout wiki -

New York was the location of the United Nations headquarters.

In 2065 a nuclear reactor, struggling to power the population of 17 million people, went supercritical for a period of about 5 minutes. While there was no explosion, the NYC incident coined the term "hot summer" for a heat-related electrical overload on nuclear systems.

Maybe it fried 17 million people and now it's a giant mass grave, do you really want the next Fallout to take place in such a city? :)
