I was around when they ruined it. Added the wilderness wall you must jump over, made the wilderness safe, made the wilderness kills not drop all their shiny dragon gear. Made the graphics 'better' with 'animations' and 'cutscenes' which were all just really poor using stock emotes. Yes...it went to hell.

I played through the first 40 or so levels without membership (I specialized in cooking and fishing so my combat was lacking) my membership expired at level 69 and my inventory and bank were full of member items i didnt want to get rid of and i just couldn't get back into the game.

Good times. I was addicted to that game when I was like 12. First and only MMO I've played...and got addicted to... shut up I was 12. Is it the same as it was 6 years ago?
The last time I looked it was. The animations are all over the top now making it look really really stupid. Maybe that's just because it looks weird to someone who hasn't played it properly since he was 13 (5 years ago).

If I ever go back on Runescape, it'll be with the following steps in mind:

1) Hack to get infinite monies
2) Buy millions of everything on the grand exchange
3) Watch as hyperinflation begins and Runescape turns into post-ww1 Germany
That would be an excellent troll. I would love to find a way to do that.

Yeah, like everyone I played it in my preteens and stopped around the time I hit my teens. The quests were pretty good, mostly because it lacks any "Go here, kill this, bring back x of these" quests. I loved how it was a browser game, no downloads needed.

But still, it was a grind fest, it didn't look that great and the community wasn't the best.

However, I loved being in the forums there, made some good friends who probably have long since left it. I fucking loathed however that you needed a membership to use the forums, and that Jagex were a bunch of 'think of the children' do-gooders who wouldn't tolerate the least amount of bad or dirty language.

I got to level 70 and gave the account to my little brother, now he kills his friends my brother is such a legend.

I really hated my time in the game, the community was bad, I was in a clan filled with idiots, the game was boring without membership, and after a while it just got boring, the only thing I liked was the quests that were actually good and didn't involved getting 20 of something or kill 100 things and Castle Wars when everione wasn't eating fish while fighting.

I used to play it ages ago, then moved onto other online games that I got myself addicted to. I still occasionally log in to get holiday-only items; they?re still Easter, Halloween and Christmas only right?

While we are at it, I always think Runescape is not that bad of a game and curious on where it got so much hatred from. Considering it's a web-game which I personally think there are worse ones out there, it got huge contents, its own pretty deep storyline, decent graphic for a web-game and even flavor notes on every items if you care to read about and wide variety of skills and other related things and etc.

So, what's wrong with it? Other than its not-so-competitive combat system (yes, I admit it was a bit dull but then all I did was mining coal for several months straight during my play just to get my Smiting level up).

Level 82, same name as <-.

I used to love Runescape. Got to busy, though. Never picked it back up, and now I've always got something I'd rather play.
I remember playing the GE, though. Got a mil or so. Just gotta pay attention to the merch'ers. Good times, good times.
Incidentally, does that actually still happen? The merch guilds price fixing on everything. It was a constant occurrence when I played, but...

The thought of such pro trolling gives me hope for this world. You have my aid brother. With the botting plague in Runescape now would be a most excellent time to strike. Most excellent indeed.
I'll have to learn how to hack first. :p

A man's allowed his pipe dreams, it's just that some are more constructive than others... though I have a friend who's pretty pro at hacking and computer stuff...

I remember Grindscape back in the day. My brother and I used to run a clan called the Sands of Time (which died then resurrected under the leadership of one of the shittier clan councilmembers) and we would give out free beer to random noobs.

Good times.

This has already pretty much been done, except instead of a hack, it was done by the hordes of bots.

OT: I played it for a while, finished all of the quests (the free ones that is) and then stopped, because all there is left to do after that is grind. Also, almost every action you can take in that game amounts to the exact same thing. Mining: Click rock, get ore + mining XP. Fishing: Click fish, get fish + fishing XP. Combat: Click bad guys, get loot + combat XP.

It really gets dull after you've finished the quests...

No I don't think there is one.

I used to love the game but the nostalgia no longer weighs up against it being dull, I'm a high lvl and everything just takes too long and the game itself really isn't that enjoyable to me anymore.

I actually played quite a fair bit of RuneScape, although it was solely for the Quests which were actually really good. However most of the time was spent skill grinding so I don't have much motivation to start playing again.

Played it when I was in Jr. High, got most of the free content completed, didn't have income to buy the rest of the game, got bored, tried replaying it again, got bored again.

Fun fact: When my sister first saw me playing it, she made fun of me. Few days/weeks later, she is playing it herself.

I remember Runescape. Played it a TON when I was younger. The grind was terrible but I actually enjoyed some of the quests. As I got older I decided there were better ways to spend my time than having my virtual avatar doing the same task over and over again. I loved talking to people, loved the quests but that grind was just too much toward the end (a funny fact someone told me on there - from lv1-lv92 is about the same experience as from lv92-99. How's that for a grind!).

I used to play it, there's not much wrong with the game at all. It's just a very simple MMO that's accessible to everyone and easy to get the hang of. It's a game that you don't have to play hours and hours at a time to do something.

The only thing I do hate, and what killed it for me, is the community.

My girlfriend and I log in to Runescape from time to time and just troll if we're bored. Two monks with pink capes, being mockingly religious, grammar Nazi, who damn people to Hell, and stalk randoms.

I used to play religiously about 6/7 years ago. Haven't been back since then. It was the only MMORPG I ever got into. Probably because I used to play it with friends.

I'll be trying The Old Republic with a friend though.

I used to always pronounce it as "run-escape" until told otherwise. I don't get the hate, it's just a little Java game, is it because it's popular? Because if it is then... Damn Hipsters!
