It was okay when I was younger and poorer, but now that I can afford nice looking MMOs I play those instead.
Are you implying that i'm poor because i play Runescape?

From a design perspective it is a horrible peace of shit. I played it when I was very young, but I have since realized how blatantly bad the game really is.

Sooo how about we kill it with fire and improve the value of MMO's as a whole :D

Good for you for liking it though :p

RuneScape was the first MMO I played, over 6 years ago now. It still has the most time sunk into it out of any MMO I've played, and I come back to it every now and then. I'm not currently playing, but the new boss they recently added actually looks challenging, unlike the vast majority of bosses in the game, so props to Jagex for that.

That is a bit harsh, and i don't believe it is as bad as you say it is, but hey; that is your opinion.

Runescape is fine in it's place. It is most people's first experience of an mmorpg and is something of a stepping stone to greater things. It does a better job of capturing an mmo experience than any other free browser game I've played.

If I never played Runescape I might never have picked up Guild Wars.

i stopped playing when we lost free trading and wildy, and tbh even if they did bring them back i dont think ill go back , i enjoy wow more nowdays and i felt that jagex had abandoned there costumers in order to stop real world trading , imo they cut off there nose to spite there face and lost allot of players that day =(

Honestly, I got put off from it when I got what I wanted (a complete black set of armor which is shit in the long run) and turned to Diablo II, which is faaaaaaaaar superior in every aspect (Just play Diablo II if you think I am flaming, seriously...)
Only reason I picked up playing Runescape was that half of my former class was playing it.

But later on, I found out one of my former classmates that was 14, had pimples covering HIS ENTIRE FACE LITERALLY, spoke very dark since puberty had struck him hard and always played Runescape on the recesses.
I was mortified, thinking he reflected the entire Runescape community, so I took a step back...
(That's bullshit AND unreasonable, I admit, but I was a kid back than, and that's how my mind-set worked.)

Today, there are a lot of genres and medias I can turn to before even getting a single thought about Runescape. It hasn't even crossed my mind when I have descended into utter and complete boredom at times.

Wall o' text is dull, so let me put it this way; Get Diablo II, and Diablo III when it comes out.
Runescape can't compete nor compare with them. Not flaming, just do it, says this long former Runescape player. That's where I turned to anyways when Runescape couldn't deliver "it" to me anymore.
Must had been 7-8 years since I played RS... Not given it much thought nowadays.

Apologies if I provoked anyone reading, but this is the truth for me, for better or worse. Felt I had to show the other side of the coin if you know what I mean. Can't have a topic with only praise.

Probably the first and last MMO (unless new republic convinces me otherwise) I'll ever play, I played when I was around 12 or 13 and it got boring after a while.

But meh, fun times for a while.

EDIT: shouldn't this be in the gaming section?

If it wasn't for Runescape, I wouldn't have had my current username and/or internet persona.

It was a while ago, back in 5th grade or something, when I was playing Runescape. I stupidly made my character's username my own name and my birth year. Not a good thing to do at all. But one time when someone said my username, I didn't know if they meant me in real life or in the game. So I got scared, and asked my dad to create a new account for me. When thinking of a username, he just put "Jumplion" and it stuck.

So, yeah, I never play Runescape nowadays. But I like to think of it as "My Little MMO", something to get people into. Still, it is terrible compared to many other MMOs, but it is from a browser so that helps its success.

Eh... I still play it sort of, I used to play it a lot more than I do now, mostly I only get on a couple of times a week for like an hour before I say I'm bored and get off... long live the Xbox for having good games FTW. =P

I think Runescape is a pretty good starter MMO, but I don't think it's extensive enough for more mature players. If you look at other MMO's like WoW for example, there's much more customisation in the characters, the world is much larger and varied, there's a wider range of classes and so on. Runescape has very strict "Warrior, Ranger, Mage" classes, and the combat is pretty boring to watch.

I quit Runescape about 8 years ago because I'd got bored with it, I don't think it would be enough now to satisfy me if I started again, especially as I wouldn't want to pay monthly for the membership thing.

I'd completed every quest, and got very very bored very very quickly.
The game isn't just about completing quests, lol.

There is tons of Professions you can take up to make cash, and level up.

There is also
-Minigames
-PvP
-Wilderness
-Tons of other shit to do that i can't honestly think of every single thing
Yes, the professions are amazing, better than a lot of P2P MMO's, but the quests really make it stand out.

OT: I like it a lot, and go on it every so often, and I always get annoyed at it being called a 'Kid game'

I played a bit of it a while back but it wasn't really my thing.

Also i seem to remember hordes of identical people crowding round trees and everyone getting annoyed at them.

I think the reason people say it is a kid's game is because of the whole graphics and browser MMO thing, I stopped playing it a looooong time ago due to me getting hacked, security of that game could have been better at the time.

It was insanely addicting at the time but I just can't go back to it, I don't need ANOTHER MMO addicting me again.

didn't cover all your bases dude.

Whattya know, I'm sucked back into this addicting game. That's a good thing and a bad thing... It's fun and kills time... But it also takes a lot of time from my day, because of the ridiculous exp rates.

Yes i have had my fair share of WoW. I'm just taking a good break from that game because my life was slowly being ruined by it.
So you're addicted to a game, while taking a break from a game you were addicted to?
Also, you can't Inb4 runscape sucks when it's a thread about people's opinions of runescape/

Its way too grindy, and while it does do well at providing plently of things to do, pretty much all the non-combat aspects boil down to doing simple tasks over and over again as a massive timesink. And even the combat is as basic as they get.

And it relies even more heavily on operant conditioning than most mmorpgs.(see that skinner box extra credits video)

Even other Free-ish MMOs like D&D Online or LOTRO offer deeper character types and engaging gameplay.
