Well,

I'm going to have to go with Eli's death in Half Life 2: Ep 2 as well. It was the saddest character death by far. The death of Big Mama (Eva) in MGS4 was a heavy one too though.
WTF!? She dies? I don't remember that part

Because you just had to put this in Gaming Discussion, Srg. Johnson in Halo 3. For non-gaming deaths, Joyce Summers in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The entire episode "The Body" had me in tears for 40something minutes.
Yeah I can see people rolling out the deaths in animes already.

For me personally:

When Sergeant Avery Johnson died in Halo 3. If you've read the Halo novels, then you'll know that he went through a lot. He even was a SPARTAN I himself.

or

When Dom 'sends' Maria to a better place in Gears of War 2. The music, camera angles and voice acting was all quite touching. I'm surprised he made it through to Gears 3 though. What can you do for a man who has lost his wife, children, parents and brother?

I think you quoted the wrong person. mine were Johnson and, for non-gaming, Joyce in Buffy.
Sorry, I didn't see it under the white. In fact, did anyone see it?

When Crono gets Vaporized by Lavos saving his friends in the Underwater Palace. Sure, they "save" him later but still. How many RPG's kill off the MAIN CHARACTER halfway through the story?

Non-game saddest character death is
Spike. Just the whole last few episodes are depressing as hell and then he goes and gets himself shot.

I kinda found my own character's death in Dragon Age kind of sad. Especially because all the main party members were there. Yet it kind of made it more heroic.

I haven't got to that bit, but I know that
Final Fantasy VII:
Aeris dies in FFVII. So yeah, needless to say, that.

My memory is terrible, so I can't think of any more. Unless this counts:
Final Fantasy VIII:
Raine in FFVIII. Although you don't actually -see- her die, but hearing about it was sad. And when Laguna visits her grave, that made it sadder.

Zack Fair's death in Crisis Core never fails to make me cry.

And I refuse to put that in a spoiler because if you don't know that by now, you've been living under a rock.

Oh and..
Ghost's death. He was such an awesome character and then they had to go and kill him. Makes me wish that I had the option to kill Shepherd slowly and painfully. [sub]Traitorous bastard.[/sub]

John Marston. You have no idea how much I enjoyed killing that balding, fat little wretch at the end.

My favourite, ever, is
Jenny, during the Orphanage scene
. Incredibly well done with the best voice acting ever, atmospheric music and location...everything about it was perfectly sad and depressing.
That was a quality scene. Shit, it was a quality game. You were like totally powerless to do anything to help save her. Then, after you die, you wake up in world war 1 and its like GOD THIS GAME GETS MORE AND MORE AWESOME!!!!11111 >:) /rant.

I agree with that post.

No really a death per se, but what happens to Angela the last time you see her. Death would be better than the perpetual hell she chose imho...
Of course, In Water is one of the best endings in history. Unbelievably sad, yet so very, very fitting...
