Hmm, i haven't actually played that many sad games, to be honest. But incase I had to pick one sad Game, I'd problaby pick HL2:EP2.

Goddamn, that ending. Manly tears we're shed.

Also, do VN's count?

The ending of FF7 crisis core

You know from the start of the game how it ends for zack but when you finally get there and he gives his life to protect cloud against unbeatable odds but you fight on doing all you can. He still dies, and his last words to cloud "did i become a hero?" so many manly tears were shed over this
^ THIS.

Actually, probably out of nowhere but when Mordin dies in ME3, that dug into me. Maybe just me since he was by far and away the best thing I could see turn up after I'd heard about the endings but the scene
Where he's trying to fix the Shroud, everything's blowing up and all he can do is hum 'I am the very model of a Scientist Salarian' and his last words to Shepherd 'It had to be me, someone else might get it wrong', MANLY. TEARS. Makes it worse that there's no way I'd ever opt for the way to save him because... damnit, it belittles what he did.

Other than that, uhhh... maybe inFamous 2, but just because I was having way too much fun with the game and when it hit me that either Cole died or everyone who was human did I had to dig deep to make the right call. Perhaps weirdly since it's such an obvious moral choice, I actually did struggle with that and felt a little lost during Zeke's ending narration.

I had totally forgotten about that ! That was one of the saddest endings ever !

I was pretty sad over the ending of Mass Effect 3 because...

I spent the whole game romancing Kaiden, only for him to get lasered to death by that damn reaper !

I am not ashamed to admit the following:

I can't think of another game that has really done this to me

Hardly anyone who played it but Nier made me cry hardcore. The end bit was one shock after another and leaves your emotions in turmoil and I garuntee you cannot predict what happens in that games plot. Seriously underrated gem I can see myself replaying years down the line.

And the first Alundra was a tad ridiculous, the whole game revolved around people dying and suffering in a colorful anime world.

I could second (or third, fourth etc.) quite a few - MGS3, 'In Water' from SH2, but both the ending of FFX and seeing Auron's story during gameplay both made me cry shameful, shameful amounts...but then again I cant really say sad because true heroes...don't need happy endings.

The Longest Journey has always been the game to provoke the most emotion from me, and much of that emotion sadness. It starts out as such a cheerful adventure with a quirky and lighthearted protagonist but by the end becomes incredibly serious.
Great, now I have this nefarious urge to jump into April's shoes again. Indeed, you are right.

Planescape: Torment.

I don't want to spoil anything but I'm pretty sure most people who've played it would agree.
I didn't consider it as "sad" as it was moving, somber and gloomy in that uncanny way, where the true gloom hangs just over the horizon. The truly sad part was Deionarra of course, the others were more..."stop and reflect" thing, at least from my experience...I've been through the Planes fifteen times already. And now I need to go a sixteenth as well.

One more I'd add, that I didn't see mentioned yet: Terranigma. Crystal Blue is in the air, indeed...

Oh yeah...and the Project Zero/Fatal Frame series...that is, once you get past the stunned horror at discovering the history of the places bit by bit, those histories are sad.

Fragile Dreams ~Farewell Ruins of the Moon~ (Wii)

You play as a young boy in world where everyone except him has died and is now inhabited by hostile ghosts, but what's really sad is that you can pick up items left by other people, and they all carry their memories. They KNEW they were going to die, and the items tell how they managed to cope with the end of the world. Some are funny, but most are heart-warming tear jerkers. Also, heavy spoilers
Every other friendly ghost, robot or character you meet dies in the end.
Also, everybody except the main character gets a ridiculously dark and sad backstory.

Looking back now, this game was sad to the point of being ridiculous. Didn't stop me from crying all the way through.

Also, Pandora's Tower (Wii)

Since the game revolves around human beings being horribly transformed into monsters in order to stop a terrible war that is killing millions and leaving the rest famished, and you get to see as women and children die for the mistakes of their leaders. Adquiring all books throughout the game also reveals they were using their own soldiers as lab rats in order to test the power of the experiments, with horrifing results.

There are many, many more sad things about those, but I will stop now, or my post will be nothing but spoilers.

Also, Mass Effect 3. I don't think I need to explain that.

MGS3, John's ending in Red Dead Redemption and Roman's ending in GTA4.

I know it's not manly but I was actually sad when Soap died in MW3. Not tears but...sad.

Lufia and the Fortress of Doom was a depressing game. Getting through the entire game with the main character's childhood friend only to discover that she's the sacrifice to save the world was tough. Even though you find out she's alive later on in the end credits, it was still tough. (almost 20 year old game. Don't care about spoilers.)

Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinestrals. Same thing. Maxim and Selen sacrifices themselves because two of the other characters made appearances in the first game, so... Yeah.

Hell, the whole entire Lufia Franchise was depressing to get through.

I second the tears for nier, when I completed the game once and saw that EVERY time you play for another ending a core part of the game changes it just tugged those emotional heartstrings everytime.

R.I.P Beepy and Kalil, I have never felt so bad for my actions in a video game

Mother 3, that game can just get heartbreaking at times
That scene where Flint breaks down and lashes out at the townspeople after learning of his wifes death was a really sad scene. The saddest part of course was the ending, when you learn that your brother Claus was the Masked Man throughout the game, and was brainwashed, with the spirit of his Mother being the only thing powerful enough to break the mind control just long enough to fire off a bolt of lightning at you, knowing that it would be reflected off of the Franklin Badge you have, causing Claus to kill himself, breaking the mind control in the process. That whole scene is just about as sad as it gets.

Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter
This game makes me so sad and so depressed that one of my favorite RPGs ended on such a bad note. This game single handedly killed my favorite RPG franchise. The story is sad and pathetic, the entire story only the palest of shadows of the glory that used to be the breath of fire series. Your a person born into an underground world and your goal in the game? To get to the surface. That... is just depressing.

Every short story from Lost odessey( thousand years of memories) . Iv'e renamed it manly tears: the game . When you put yourself in Kaim's shoes , everyhing is so immensly sad . Great game.
It got me in one of the first towns you visit.

The little girl who was ill and couldn't leave the town and he came to visit her and tell her stories and then she died waiting for him to come back.
Ding ding ding.

Jesus, that part of the game was sad. I actually started avoiding the Dream triggers just because I was tired of crying after a while. There were a few happy ones, but those were sandwiched in between a horde of soul-crushingly sad ones. Still, did wonders for characterization, and it made me sympathize a lot with a guy I thought was a fairly boring character at first.

Ok, this is gonna sound like small potatoes next to the likes of Mother 3 and MGS4, but what really got me is Gears of War. The whole series. I know, I know, it sounds stupid. How could I be honestly moved by the template for every ironsight, third-person, chest high wall game made in the last half a decade? Look at the backstory and the sutbleties. Gears has a setting so dark and bleak that it's approching Warhammer 40k territory. Even before the Locust showed up, the world was still pretty depressing. What really made me tear up was the scene with Maria in the second game. I remember being online with some random guy who was playing music down the mic, and I asked him to turn it off until that cinematic was done. It was a freaking powerful scene, at least for me. And then there was that scene at the gas station in the third game... I don't think anyone saw that coming.
