Shirley's death for a few reasons, Lelouch trying and failing to use his Geass to save her which may have speed up her death and the fact that it was really just a case of bad luck. She just happens to remember everything thanks to Orange boy and then accidentally mentions it to Rolo who goes bat shit insane and shoots her. After all the shit she's been through from both R1 and R2 plus her little death speech, the scene just got to me. This sadness was turned into my fire hot anger for Rolo that I'm glad Lulu shared.

Also the episode of FMA with Nina and Alexander. again I turned my sadness into anger aimed at her rat bastard of a dad.

Urutsokidoji, when the dude gets caught wanking at the schoolgirls in the gym.

That was very sad.

Seikono, well not sad per say but extremely depressing.

Seriously if you have suicidal tendencies or a hopeless romantic, don't watch it. And it only gets worse the closer you get to the end.

When
pretty much the entire cast died except for Kei in Gantz. Katou was amazing and the way he died along with the clips of his little brother wandering around lost were soul shattering.
God that was so sad.

It was in an anime movie so i think it counts..

OT: Metropolis. At the end were the boy's trying to pull up the robot girl. It really got my heart going as each cable snapped agonisingly slowly. And when it gets to the last one and you think she's going to snap out of it the last cable snaps and she falls into darkness, leaving the boy crying cluching his end of the cable thing.

That really choked me up in a way nothing has come close to since. Tragiclly sad but brilliantly done.

The Tachkomas (Or whatever, those little robot tanks) in the end of Ghost in The Shell season 1. No spoilers unless you already know what happened.

That was, uh, very touching.

Also, I suppose the fact that
Kira ultimately failed in Death Note is pretty sad. He deserved to win, dammit.

Some of the ones I can think of have been mentioned already, but there's also this:

Towards the very end of the first Negima anime, where Asuna dies. It's especially sad when you see poor Negi crying his eyes out...

EDIT: Now that I think about it, Axis Powers Hetalia, while primarily a humor anime, has some pretty sad moments, for example-

the end of the "Chibitalia" arc when Holy Roman Empire has to leave, especially when you know he won't see Chibitalia again... that is, if you don't believe a certain rumor...

I can't wait to watch that...

I've only seen the original 1930s German Sci-fi movie on which the anime is based on. It's pretty good =/
