Saints Row IV Had to Drop Bollywood Dance Number Ending

Saints Row IV creative director Steve Jaros talks about the pain of having to cut ambitious ideas.

Saints Row IV is the kind of game where you play as the President of the United States of America, wield a "Dubstep Gun" gun, and save the world from anal-probing aliens. So when I hear that the game's original ending featured a three minute Bollywood-style song and dance number, i'm not entirely surprised. Volition creative director Steve Jaros tells a Comic-Con panel about why the number had to get the ax.

"It was on our schedule, and we were trying to do it the right way" Jaros said, telling us that Volition was looking at choreography and searching high and low for "the right Bollywood song" to license. Ultimately, despite the team's enthusiasm, the number had to be scrapped when the Saints Row IV motion capture team detailed the cost and complexity of adding the song and dance gag. "Time kills jokes, is what it boils down to," he said.

Other cut content included a flying, fire-breathing dragon, which was also given the chop due to cost and time restraints.

"The stars didn't line up," Jaros said of the Bollywood dance, but assured Comic-Con attendees that "the spirit of the Bollywood dance number happens [at the end] and it is poetry in motion. It is so good."

For those of you worrying that Saints Row IV won't appeal to your artistic side, Jaros also revealed that the game's in-game radio will feature enemy alien Emperor Zinyak reading monologues from Shakespeare plays and the entire first chapter of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

Saints Row IV is currently due out for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on August 20.

Some games are meant to be serious, others wacky. SR2 is still the best of the series, but saints row is still fun. Don't worry, this won't injure any "Serious" games. Beyond two souls will still be a kitchen chore and quicktime event filled pretentious X-men rip off.

Fun Fact: Pride and Prejudice is the only romance novel I will admit to enjoying. I know which radio station I'll be using!

Anyways, the cutting of the Bollywood number is tragic. Utterly tragic.

GUYS. THIS WAS ALMOST IN A AAA VIDEO GAME. WE WERE SO... CLOSE...

If the Emperor is the Alien at the end of the video then I'm sold!

Yeah, that is the Emperor at the end of the video.

After reading about the radio stations in SR IV, I'm having a hard time deciding which I want to listen to: The Classic Station, the 70s/80s station (which has "What is Love" on it), or the EDM station (which has the news reporter from the past SR games, Jane Valderamma, as the DJ, "talking about the finer points of Dubstep").

Also, hearing about all this cut stuff kinda makes me sad, but also more excited for what DID make it into the game.

Guess i won't be buying this.
Nothing wrong with silly games, and i did enjoy playing Saints Row 3, but it just veered of too far from what Saints Row 2 was (not to mention poor Gats fate), and cut too much of the activities SR2 had.
This sounds like a fun game, and if it had a name other than Saints Row tagged at the top of the box i would probably buy it.
But as i disagree with the direction of the series has taken, i will not buy it.

SR2 was hilarious, dramatic, fun game, with great characters, decent enough writing, and gameplay that could keep my hooked for hours at a time.
SR3 was good game, with decent gameplay, and mostly entertaining story, but every change from SR2 they made, seemed to make the game worse, and 4th game seems to follow the same track 3rd did.

Maybe they're telling us they cut this stuff for the same reason they told us about the fart jar last time...anybody have a petition ready because a Bollywood style musical number would make for an excellent ending.

Completely forgot about that! Looks like I'll be waiting for the complete edition of this one.

I'd like a radio station where you can import your own mp3's.
Every sandbox should have this feature.
GTA4 did, which I liked. Not sure why SR2 or 3 didn't, with modding it's possible.

Maybe it's because that they spent a lot of money licensing those songs and required to play because of sponsorship/endorsement deals. Why there wasn't native import support though.

Yup. We're virtually guaranteed to see all this allegedly "time constrained" content reappear as paid DLC. I'd rather Volition be honest and admit that "we cut vanilla content from the game so we can sell it as overpriced DLC later down the line", but that would be asking too much.

I would have loved to see a Bollywood ending. Especially since they have, what, 7 different voice actors?

Every time I read something new about this game I feel like someone's describing a rejected Family Guy script.
