Almost all gamers have played or seen a sandbox and often it's fun to go completely away from any hint of plot and concentrate on building your evil empire (or whatever). One thing that's greatly annoyed me is the lack of variation in the settings, nearly all of them being set in some American city. So what's the most interesting sandbox setting you've seen or would like to see?

Morrowind wins hands down. If theres a better setting, tell me now and I'll play it.

Just a thought, so don't call me out on it, but Left 4 Dead can be viewed as a half sandbox. Go on multiplayer, play as infected, and there. A whole map for you to screw around it. Just an idea....

Besides Fallout 3 all I have seen is either Today standard City or Medievil type countryside. What I would like to see is a Space Sandbox. Ever play Freelancer? Something like that.

Actually, now that I think about it there was this game I played a long long time ago (and my memory is bad) but it was called Scrapeland(?) It was like a city of robots near space or something but you could like control different robots with different abilities and fly around in cars etc etc. Like I said it was a loooooong time ago and the detail are sketchy, but I do remember it was "unique".

Not really a sandbox. Hard to put my finger on exactly why but probably because there is nothing to do. I might accept g-mod as a sand box (with reservations) but there isn't much to achieve and the map isn't expansive enough. Others could probably express that better than I have.

Yes but the same cities in the same style? All the American cities get recycled. Even transplanting it to say the future or to ancient egypt or even another country (I'm aware they did that in a GTA expansion but that was an exception) would make it a bit more interesting.

I could go for Steampunk. I thought I heard about a Steampunk FPS being developed...

But, yeah, a kind of Terry Pratchett-y world would be good. We also have Assassin's Creed 2 on its way.

But you don't have to kill survivors. Others will do that. In fact, you could team with the survivors [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyIWcfhujeY] for major laughs. It's not like the game punishes you for that. That's the survivors job.

While it is nothing like all of the games you guys have said I absolutely love Garry's Mod. Its the ultimate sandbox game I've spent countless hours screwing around in it. I don't think it is the type of sandbox game that you were referring to however.

Touche. However the overall question of what you can achieve (besides choosing which side you're going to kill) in a L4D map still stands and the maps are still far too small to be considered sandbox.
I wish I had a friendly tank for L4D.

I like the idea of a Pratchett based sandbox game. You could have it city based in Ankh-Morpork or in a rural setting like up in the Ramtops.
