That sums it up.

Its hurting everything and everyone. In more ways than one. This can hurt all of us. It might mean that even Zero Punctuation being posted on youtube might get theescapist in trouble if this passes.

Do everything in our power to shut this down.

"If ACTA comes into effect there will be NO schools because it will be ILLEGAL for teachers to teach the students what they learned in college or from books. "

Link me to the petition and I'll sign it.

There are several virtual petitions going around. This thing is bad, and the news is spreading like wildfire as fast as I, and anyone who opposes it can. Help spread the word please, so we can get something done about this.

It'll never pass in truly democratic countries.

Too many people would be against that.

But, all the same, if this gains any ground, it'll be a terrible thing. I don't openly protest as I despise politics, but this, I'd be out on the streets screaming at the supporters. It's just wrong.

...Didn't you already make a thread about this, that was just a copy paste of the escapist news thread?

Wrong to me seems like the understatement of the millennium.

That seems likely.
Why must people over-react to everything?
Chill.

Old news is old.

That said, I applaud you for taking the initiative and spreading the word about the abomination that is ACTA.

EDIT: Revised since a lot of people posted stuff before I finished my post and brought up several other points.

It would suck if this came into action, since it would likely pressure some countries into adding this law, and might also convince some of the people high up in politics that don't really "Get it" (I say it like that since there is a lot of things I could put right there that this would affect) that something like this has a chance of getting passed.

Actually quote from another person against ACTA. And if you think about it for a bit, she's right. They won't be able to teach because all the books are copyrighted. Even if they don't, they can only choose from so many publishers, and they will regulate the prices, so education cost will go up, and quality will go down.

Ok to make this clear to everyone, although this may be old news, it is now being voted on by Parliament and will soon be introduced to the public in the US. This whole ACTA "Treaty" was started by unelected officials, who want to stop all of these things because it doesnt effect them !!! They are billionaires, Lobbyists are PAYING OFF CONGRESS MEN to pass stuff like this!!! We have to stand against this, Just because it is old does not mean it is not a threat!

Fuck yeah!

I welcome you internet police overlords. Burn all these pirates and people who use the web for questionable purposes!
its not just the internet you fool. This entire thing will restrict EVERYTHING. Music, Television shows, any form of genetic engineering, modifications to parts by different companies. YOU are the short sited one. I can see several ways to improve the hydraulic quick disconnect, and even though my great grandfather was the one to sign the patents, if ACTA goes into effect, I can't touch it without the company consent to try and help make it better.

You don't realize that this also effects the drug companies. Generic store-knockoffs will be banned and we will be FORCED to buy expensive, high-price namebrands on EVERYTHING.
*Runs into the room frantic*

"The Consequences Will Never Be The Same! The Sky Is Falling, The Sky Is Falling!"

EDIT: Calling me names helps you get your point across really well btw...
*facedesk* okay look at this from a logisitics point of view. If everything and thier brother copyrights something, whats going to happen to the cheep, still functional nock-off brands like the Kroger or Meyer cereals? They'll disapear and we'll be forced to buy name-brand products at cutthroat prices.

I first heard about this around one year ago. Slow uptake.

I'm sure the EU already voted pretty unanimously against it. Hooray for Europe I guess.

Yeah, this seems a little fishy. Don't get me wrong, I do think ACTA may be a real thing but they must have a legitimate reason to police important drugs and internet usage. There is two sides to every story and even if everything that video said is true, there is no way that would pass in a highly demographic country without some sort of revolt (as if there are not enough of those these days), so I believe there is little to worry about at this current time. I'd need a hell of a lot more information before I get my pitchforks and torches ready on this cause; both the good side and the bad side, not just one or the other being biased.
