The thing is, older laws were attempted to be passed by congress, this is being voted on by un-elected officials being paid by lobbyists (people who want something and pay for it, LOTS OF MONEY) to get this passed, its very different in the sense that it is not only going to effect torrenting, but TV, Medicine and Much MUCH MORE!

On the one hand, it's completely evil and needs to die in a fire.

On the other hand, it could potentially find nearly all sources of child pornography and destroy them.

Actually quote from another person against ACTA. And if you think about it for a bit, she's right. They won't be able to teach because all the books are copyrighted. Even if they don't, they can only choose from so many publishers, and they will regulate the prices, so education cost will go up, and quality will go down.
Exact book content, maybe, actual information, no. The point doesn't actually make any real sense whatsoever. Fear mongering is silly.

Fuck yeah!

I welcome you internet police overlords. Burn all these pirates and people who use the web for questionable purposes!
its not just the internet you fool. This entire thing will restrict EVERYTHING. Music, Television shows, any form of genetic engineering, modifications to parts by different companies. YOU are the short sited one. I can see several ways to improve the hydraulic quick disconnect, and even though my great grandfather was the one to sign the patents, if ACTA goes into effect, I can't touch it without the company consent to try and help make it better.

You don't realize that this also effects the drug companies. Generic store-knockoffs will be banned and we will be FORCED to buy expensive, high-price namebrands on EVERYTHING.
*Runs into the room frantic*

"The Consequences Will Never Be The Same! The Sky Is Falling, The Sky Is Falling!"

EDIT: Calling me names helps you get your point across really well btw...
*facedesk* okay look at this from a logisitics point of view. If everything and thier brother copyrights something, whats going to happen to the cheep, still functional nock-off brands like the Kroger or Meyer cereals? They'll disapear and we'll be forced to buy name-brand products at cutthroat prices.
Again, your alarmist interpretation of this is absurd.

-'To counterfeit means to illegally imitate something. Counterfeit products are often produced with the intent to take advantage of the superior value of the imitated product. The word counterfeit frequently describes both the forgeries of currency and documents, as well as the imitations of works of art, toys, clothing, software, pharmaceuticals, watches, electronics and company logos and brands. In the case of goods, it results in patent infringement or trademark infringement. '- wiki

You're all for people who counterfeit? Of course not. If you think all cheaper goods are going to considered 'counterfeit' then I suggest you stock up on tin foil hats too before it's too late.
Okay put it this way, yes, there are pirates out there, but go to Notch, the creator of minecraft, go to Valve, the creator of Portal, Halflife, Halflife 2, Portal 2, and look. Ask them how much they make from people who actually buy the real games, and ask them do they really mind the .01 percent of people who illegally download their games. Notch doesn't care, valve's opinion was 'don't get caught, we don't care'

That said, I applaud you for taking the initiative and spreading the word about the abomination that is ACTA.
old saying is old.
'Old meme is old', to be exact. But I see your point, anyway. ^^°
Doesn't make my post any less valid, however; the ACTA boogeyman has been looming over the internet for well over two years now.

I thought that ACTA already bit the bullet and was replaced with COICA, which also died, and got transformed into the PROTECT act, which suffered an early death as well. Or am I off my rocker and someone revived this piece of shit legislation?

Looming isn't really the appropriate word.

Slinking away in the shadows so that most of us don't notice or care would be proper in my opinion.

Yeah, i somehow doubt that part about the education will happen. even if you think "logically" about it, you cant copywrite history. Besides, as is now in the US, some company in texas does most of the books for education, so they decide whats goes in and what doesnt, and whether its liberal or consverative.

Anyway, Im not sure what really to think about it, mostly cause that video was fear mongering, but if this passes... eh. Life will go on, and those desperate will get around the law.

I refuse to suckered in by your scaremongering! This ACTA shit has been floating around for years now. It has never passed and it never will pass, assuming it is even real and not some tabloid scaremongering bullshit.

Even if does manage to destroy nearly all sources of child porn (which it probably won't) it won't stop the act itself. It wouldn't be recorded and uploaded online, but that's about it.
