I'm not religious but I still use terms like "Oh god" and "Christ" to express stuff.

Or just say "By the Emperor" to get some weird looks

Personally I use "By the Allfather"/"In the Allfather's name" alot. Once when I was very pissed off "By He who hung upon the tree Yggdrasil for nine days and nine nights" Along with some other references to Norse deities (Tyr grant me courage/Thor protect me/Fenrir take you) Mostly since I am an atheist but really really like the Norse gods.

Oh, I just say 'oh gods' for the same reason I say "By the Nine!" or "Thank the Maker!"
It's not for political correctness or anything.

We would not offer the sacrifice of men to the Thunderer, to him we offer the blood of goats. Men are sacrificed to the Grey God, The Originator of War, The Spear-Shaker, The Wise One, The Allfather, Odin. By hanging a man from a ash tree and piercing his side with a spear, as Odin was pierced when he hung himself upon Yggdrasil, we dedicate their souls to the Raven God.

I have a friend who says Oh Gods, as he is an openminded fellow who believes theres a likely chance theres more out there than just one god. We both have a laugh at Christianities expense sometimes but its in good fun. Personally Im agnostic though.

You know the name of Christian god is not God... It is El-Shaddai, Jehovah, Theos, Kurios and Pateras. If we go with what the bible says so.

God is just title for A god not for ""THE" God". There are many religions in this world and one cultural form of a single religion shouldn't be able to boss the world around about what to say.

But this is just my opinion - and I act along it.

Also - I haven't seen this kind of mutation amongst the language of internet.

I wasn't aware of this, and that is kinda silly.

I mean, if it's used in a mocking context like 'oh noes', that's fine. But people using it as an actual expression just come across as actively not trying to sound religious, which is a little childish.
Yes, shame on those assholes who want to express their own thoughts and beliefs without bending to what society would consider normal. So childish.

More On-Topic, my best guess is that people doing it must have been playing too much Fire Emblem: Awakening.

Because it's a show of exasperation.

Why is your made up god worth any more than multiple made up gods that someone else might believe in?

Hell I'm an Atheist. I just said without shame that all gods are made up, and I still say "Oh god" and even "Jesus Christ"
Or "Oh your god" But that's just a line from Futurama.

But for a polytheist, or an atheist in a polytheist community, they say "Oh gods"

Or maybe, since they know they're worshiping made up gods they pick ones they like. Why are the Seven from Game of Thrones less valid than the one from the Bible? They could be swearing to them or any other deities they might feel like following.

Interestingly enough I've never heard "gods dammit"
I've said stuff like "May multiple gods damn you to every conceivable hell!" But that's just because I like being melodramatic.

The inconvenience of adding an extra sound to an expletive is worth the distinction I guess.

Coming into this thread, I thought it was going to be about Battlestar Galactica because the human survivors worship multiple Gods and often use phrases like "oh Gods" while the Cylons worship just the one God.
These.

I would defiantly say it's just a side effect from watching to much TV and movies. And maybe video games too.

In Fantasy, Sci-fi, Amine and things set in the past (300, Spartacus ect) very often there are multiple gods that come up somewhere. And you hear people say "oh gods" or "by the gods" in these shows/films all the time.

Then it's just a case of monkey see, monkey do.

I bet if you actually asked them anyone you heard say it would ether tell you they only actually believed in one or no gods.
This is what I always assumed it was. I've seen several Bronies around here who have picked the incredibly annoying habit of using "pony slang" casually as well. You know, like "everypony" instead of "everybody". Frankly, I wish people would cut it the fuck out, no matter what franchise they're referencing.

As for the theory that it "sounds less religious".....How so? Seriously, I don't think I should have to back up this question with additional arguments. You're obviously still referencing a supernatural, all-powerful group of beings. Polytheism is still a thing, even if it might not be native to your area. So...how is using a polytheistic phrase "less religious sounding" then using a monotheistic phrase?

Then there's the "'God' singular is blasphemous to Christians". Well....isn't referencing non-Christian gods even worse? Seriously, I'm not a Christian, so I don't know. I'm actually asking.

The most convincing reason I've seen so far, apart from the "franchise reference" one, is that it just sounds funnier. I don't personally see the difference, but that's just me. And fortunately, humor is subjective.

I feel really awkward whenever I say "bless you" to someone who just sneezed, so most times I don't say it. I expect people think I'm rude but the nature of the saying just irks me. Are we suggesting that evil spirits are released every time someone has an irritation in their nose?

I don't think twice about saying "Oh God" and I'm a true atheist. Then again were so desensitised to the word that it's lost all meaning to most people. That's probably more insulting to religious types than actually making an effort to take God's name in vain.

As a seasoned Markiplier viewer on Youtube I have adopted "Holy Balls" as my blasphemous curse of choice.

Language and meaning change through history, once upon a time people actually said "my God" and actually believed in that God. Now some people have started pluralising it- I guess swearing by multiple god's is better than one god.
For some of my friends it's GoT for me it's Battlestar Galactica

It's because people associate polytheism with things that are pleasant to them (fantasy novels, comics, favourite cartoons, Xena the Warrior Princess and so on) and monotheism - to things that are unpleasant (bad priests, terrorism, religious hate, being forced into something that you don't want to be a part of and so on). It's not to say that monotheistic religions (Christianity, for example) invoke only bad associations, it's just that people would much rather watch Thor and play Skyrim than read Bible.

Also, maybe people you see using "gods" instead of "God" are hinduists or shintoists (not sure if this words are correct)?

There are probably different reason for different people. Some probably want to avoid Christian connotations, some may believe in a polytheistic religion, some may actually like Jar-Jar Binks.

I find it hard to imagine people actually saying that sincerely.

I've never heard anybody do that. Honestly that sounds like some fictiony shit, the kind of thing you'd hear from some cultist in Skyrim.
As you say, "Oh god", despite it's reference to a deity, is essentially a secular term by now, since it's so commonplace. It hardly references any god at all, really. Adding the plural, to me, makes it more specific, like you're actually referencing a particular pantheon of some sort. Ah well. I don't think it'd really bother me if anybody said it.

EDIT:
It'd be the same thing if instead of saying "Jesus Christ," you said, like, "Prophet Muhammad."
Again, I'm so desensitized to hearing people of all religious persuasions saying "Jesus Christ" that saying, I don't know, "Joseph Smith" seems oddly specific. I'd probably either assume you're a Mormon, or ask if you were.

I mainly use the plural for roleplaying, as my characters come from a polytheistic culture. My favorite form is an exasperated "Gods above...." as a reactionary phrase.

Otherwise, I typically say "Oh crap/aw shit!" instead of "Oh god". Blame that on my mum saying the later is blasphemous, as a few above me have already pointed out.

I often use "gods" at the plural simply because i prefer the idea of a menagerie of gods over just 1 singular super god. Furthermore due to me being agnostic and having no clue if there are gods or not, it just seems safer to invoke all of them, counting the primal goo that gave birth to us as a form of deity in the worst case scenario.
