Portal.

a hundred fucking times portal. This game created the perfect spooky and unknowing atmosphere on the first play through and GLaDOS' voice was just so creepy and unassuring (not to mention the things she said)

Although it wasn't considered to be a scary game by many, it was scary as hell to me. You never knew what was going to happen and although you knew that there weren't going to be any monsters or shit jumping out, there was always that feeling that there COULD be.

I'll go with Demon Souls, mostly because i don't play many other scary games.

You feel really vulnerable through the entire game because it's so easy to die. Then you're put in the creepiest over-the-top prison ever with these freakish octopus guards with lanterns that are incredibly hard to kill.

Even the non-creepyprison levels are fairly scary.

What do you think is the scariest game ever made?

My vote goes to Demon's Souls. On my first playthrough in particular this game was horrifying. Knowing that something is trying to get me around every corner and knowing the huge price that comes with letting it get me quickly created an environment of extreme paranoia and caution within my bedroom. I tiptoed one step forward, two steps back, with my shield up, through the whole game. Levels that can be done in 15 minutes took me upwards of two hours because of my overly cautious approach.

In the end it was effective because I died on only a handful of occasions (mostly thanks to Flamelurker and Old King Allant) but my first trip through Demon's Souls legendarily hostile world was a terrifying one. Also The Tower of Latria still scares the crap out of me despite the fact that I know the layout by heart now.

Anyway what do you think is the scariest game ever made?
I agree with your choice completely. I've never walked so slowly through a level in a game before in my life. I was so paranoid I was going to get jumped or ambushed or spring a trap (all of which have happened often mind you) that I had my shield out constantly and moved at a snails pace. The tower prison level made me so twitchy too. Going through the second time though was more of a cake walk though, since I knew what to expect.

While I don't play many games universally held up as horror I can nominate a few in terms of different kinds of horror.

In terms of running for your life overwhelming panic I'd have to say the recent release Alan Wake (If you're on the fence, get it. There hasn't been a 360 exclusive like it for a long time and it's incredibly well paced and fun to play), this is only enhanced by the times when you'll pick up a manuscript page and it'll say something like "Then I heard the rev of a chainsaw" and then a few minutes later you hear that chainsaw, and you cake yourself.

In terms of off-putting atmosphere and enemies I'd have to say Bioshock (While they're both very good in this aspect I'd have to say the original over bioshock 2, though number 2's multiplayer more than makes up for it).

In terms of startling scares...don't laugh at me...Half Life 2. I can't think of a game that gave me more shocks than Half Life 2, some of the enemies were just downright horrifying (Case in point those bloody venom zombies) and considering the fact that for the most part the game leaves you with little music and no sidekicks or support characters combined with the fact that it demands exploration to find the most goodies and the hard to reach areas are where they shove the most enemies you're almost always on the edge of your seat in the lonelier sections of the game.

Penumbra: Black Plague. Its so scary I've never beaten it. I could only play it for ten minutes at a time because it was so scary.

Dead Space.

To me, it was a perfect combination of action and horror.

[sub] Okay, maybe a little heavy on the horror. [/sub]
I didn't find dead space to really be horror. Sure, it startled you occasionally but that's not scary. I was startled when a june bug was in my shoe. Not quite horror.

I'm gonna go with System Shock 2 on this one.

Yea, I guess your right, I just guess I'll just-

[HEADING=1] OMG! NECROMORPH! [/HEADING]

See? Pretty damn scary, huh? :D
yeah that is pretty scary (and an ugly ************ at that) but you don't ever see a necromorph look like that up close in the game. I only really found the first levels of Dead Space scary. Running down the dark halls with the first necromorph running behind you trying to cut you up. Freaked me out! But after the first two levels were over, I had adapted and wasn't really getting scared at all......Until I got cocky and tried my hand at impossible difficulty. That is a true "Shit just got real" moment.

It depends on which kind of scare.

For jump out scares, Aliens Versus Predator 2, Condemned and Resident Evil 4 are definitely up there.

In terms of pure, crushing atmosphere, System Shock 2, STALKER (any of them) and Eternal Darkness are my choices.

I think out of all of those, Eternal Darkness scared me the most. Very unsettling, constantly.
my my.. system shock 2 still gives me bits of nightmares...

The more psychological games. Eternal Darkness seriously spooked me up like hell, almost as much so, if not more than Silent Hill 2 when the sanity meter reached zero and the game started messing with you, like putting the volume down or making cockroaches crawl over the screen all of a sudden. I never found gory horror games scary at all. Dead Space is fun, but there's nothing scary about it. It's to do with the "If it bleeds, it can die." and "I've never faced an enemy i couldn't engage in combat" concepts though. We fear what we can't face in open and fair combat. An omnipotent and unexplained force like a supernatural entity is always much more frightening than a gruesome alien, for example, because you know you can beat the alien. You can't always beat the unexplained. Shadow Man also gave me a lot of scares when i was a kid on the old N64, especially in the Asylum level!
This is very similar to my thoughts. I think games like Dead Space are thrilling, but they aren't scary. I get jumpy and excited by Dead Space but when I play something like Silent Hill 2 or Fatal Frame, I get nervous. That happens rarely with games.

I so wish that game actually worked...

At least on PC.

Probably Silent hill 2, although the scariest experience I have had with a game comes from Resident Evil 2 because I played it when I was pretty young.

Let me be the first to say the Fatal Frame series. Besides having a great atmosphere and just good design all around, the psychological terror induced by needing to go from third to first person in order to fight your already horrifying enemy is absolute brilliance.
And not only that, but having to stand still and have them slowly creep forward in order to do any damage is mindblowingly terrifying.

Also, it's really not that hard to use the search button. I'm sorry for being the one who has to say this but there are a ton of these threads that say the exact same thing. Enough already.

Bioshock wasn't realy a scary game for me. {SPOILER} Unless you found out how to make the stone stautes to move in fort frolic. When you enter the bar cellar and find the first one to move and then realise "wait if that one can move what about the others in the bar I was just in and the entire level full of them?" and walking back outside of the room to find all the stautes that were there had just vanished. AND ARE NOW LURKING THROUGH ALL FORT FROLIC ! Scary stuff.

That and Half life 2 in ravenholm. If you're going for the achievement for doing that level without firing a weapon and only using the gravity gun. Imagine this scenario. You're stuck on a ledge of a 3/4 story building with headcrab zombies shuffling towards you with only a paintcan as your last object to kill the oncoming horde. That was terrifying.
