Silent Hill 2 was pretty scary. 4, not so much.

Easily the scariest game I've ever played, however, is Condemned 1 (haven't played 2). It was sooooooooooooo atmospheric--I've never had a game get in my head like Condemned did. The frantic-ness of the combat and the sinister-ness of the plot fit in brilliantly. Everything about that game was so intense... every moment was almost overwhelming.

...and that sense of being overwhelmed is how to truly scare someone. Silent Hill was scary on a psychological level, but Condemned was scary on a physical andpsychological level. Every moment has you on the breaking point, and the slightest things will make you piss yourself. Terrifying.
I had that same experience especially when I got to the end of the game because of the way the plot twisted into insanity.

System Shock 2.

The first time I played that, I almost pissed my pants. And wowed to never play it after dark...

Nicely oppressive/scary atmosphere was also present in the Aliens vs Predator(s), Human campaigns. Watching for that motion detector bleep in the dark corridors, flashlight battery almost empty, Seeing a 'bleep' in the detector and emptying my clip into the darkness in that direction. Only to sigh in relief when a suddenly flickering lamp reveals that it was simply elevator doors opening and closing and opening again on their own accord... Only to see two aliens stand motionlessly on top of it, staring right back at me as I my gun is reloading. Then they pounce...

Felt like screaming like a little girl at that point.
I being behind the times have only recently finished system shock 2 and while i didn't crap my pants, I jumped a few times. Even dead space didn't accomplish this for me. For it's time i can see how sh*t-scary it would have been. The atmosphere is just amazing, regardless of the graphics (which i'm sure were state of the art for it's time), and the ending... wow.
and, AvP2 was pretty damned freaky, when you're in the alien's nest. i was constantly checking my back, and for good reason. 9 times out of 10 there was a xenomorph right behind me.

However, I will admit that hearing those pricks breathing from across the room is nerve racking. Like when you had to push those dumpsters(?) with Ashley and you hear the Iron Maiden's & Regenerator's breathing or whatever they do...

I kept thinking one was going to sneak from behind me and kill Ashley. :l
seeeeeeee? creepy.

i got scared during some level that involved a legless regenerator crawling under a gate after me. ick.
But... it's fun when they crawl!:D
I like to make Leon dance as they get closer. Then I just kill them with the Broken Butterfly.

dead space, easy.
the music and the fact that they changed shit up made for a terribly frightening ambiance. they did their job well. :]
The monster that followed you everywhere was annoying and i freaked when he got too close, but apart from that, it wasn't really THAT creepy.
Great story though, even if half of it WAS ripped straight out of "Event Horizon"

the story wasn't impressive, in that the ending wasn't too surprising. but it was super fun.

i just got creeped out because i always played at night, alone, with all the lights off. :p

That's a hard lesson we must learn in Resident Evil, no matter how strong that gate looks, they will always find a way. Always.

it was a tad creepier at night, with just headphones on, but the way everyone spoke about it, I was expecting to jump out of my skin... I never got that :(
I wanted to be scared, but i was just on edge, agitated constantly. System shock 2 accomplished that for me. Always micromanaging your items, hearing a shotgun hybrid say "your song is not ours" from around the corner, always running out of a specific ammo at an important needed time, or your weapon breaking. For me, that was awesome, just the sheer atmosphere, which IMO the only other game to ever recreate that successfully was S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. That was pretty creepy at times (like being in the bloodsuckers den, during nightime, or an irradiated dog just jumping at you from randomly nowhere, it's eyes glinting in the darkness. Pure Awesome. just a shame the game was so buggy (still trying to finish Clear Sky past 10 hours into the game *sigh*

I am not sure, but I think I would just list a bunch of Resident Evil games, 4 and 5 weren't scary though. Clocktoer is pretty scary. Code Veronica is so scary I still have problems getting through it, The remake of the first one on GameCube is pretty scary, Resident Evil (PS) is also pretty bad, but they're not scary anymore...
On creepiness I think I will put Trilby's Notes by Yatzee. 5 Days a Stranger was also pretty scary (almost caused a seizure in the end).

Take notes of this, Padawan. The more you know, the better your odds at survival!

still scares me more than anything else...

so i guess that says something.
it says that i've seen too many horror films, played too many survival horror games, and that i've become desensitized to it, just like everyone has become desensitized to violence, though for me, Dead Space was a bit extreme with the violence, even for my taste.

Eh... I'd say half and half. The final fight is about the same as RE2.

Warning:
Giant mutated boss, super powerful weapon, etc.

yessum!! i will add this to my list of RE survival tips.
1. If the body on the ground has not melted, or rotted away. Shoot it from a distance.
2. If the music builds up for some reason be prepared.
3. If you find a key, it usually unlocks a door you passed in the beginning of the level.
4. That unlocked door usually holds something nasty behind it.
5. Beware of dog.

nope, didn't bother me.
i'm one of those overly desensitized types. /:
