Doom 3 freaked me out real bad when I first played it, the first half at least. Especially because I was home alone and it was the middle of the night. That was a while ago, but nothing else has scared me since.

Fatal Frame II. Ever since I saw The Shining, nothing has ever scared me quite like creepy little girls, and the satanic sacrificial rituals don't help.

I don't think I've ever really played a truly scary game. The Path is a good contender, since it's really eerie atmosphere gave me the creeps. Another good contender, and I don't think anyone's mentioned this yet, is Gears of War; it really had some moments which kept me on the edge.

Oh wait, RE4 scared the crap out of me. I'd watch it and feel fine, maybe jump a little, but when I play I completely freak out.
The only thing scary in that game was the Regenerators.
exactly!! they scared the poo out of me.
The only freaky thing I found in RE4 is that one bag thing you see before a Regenerator comes out of one of the cells. To this day I wonder what was moving inside...

Edit: Silent Hill 2, Fatal Frame(s), Dead Space, and The Suffering.

Dead Space, BioShock and F.E.A.R. for next-gen entries, but they were tolerable after a certain point (less so the last one, but I'll get to that later). Honestly, though, I still have nightmares about playing through System Shock 2.

My god, that game scared the piss right out of me. It was so immersive, with all the backstory and audio logs that you find along the way. So intense, and just scary as fuck. And I played it after having played F.E.A.R. all the way through, so it really stands the test of time as an amazing game. It's one of only two games that have ever scared me so much that I actually stopped playing*. I couldn't even get past the first level before I just put it away and vowed never to touch it again. It wasn't until a few weeks later that I plucked up the courage to go back and finish it, and boy am I glad that I did. So amazing. Definitely the scariest game ever made, along with one of the best ever.

* - The other game actually was F.E.A.R., but only because I tried to play it through in a single night with three friends watching me do it. At about five in the morning, I had a minor nervous breakdown and had to take a break for about fifteen minutes. It wasn't even Alma that did it; it was just that it went straight from horror to firefight to horror to firefight and back, over and over, that finally did me in. I recovered fine and finished it, though. All in a single night.

Now that's a story to share, I tell ya.

Yes, she is one of my favorite characters of the series. That and a few others...

Anyway, I just find that one event... disturbing. Out of everything else that happens in that game.

I'm not to partial on intentionally scary games, but I got Resident Evil 2 for Christmas a few years back. That's probably the scariest game I ever played, and it wasn't even that scary.

The house of the dead.

My young age had a lot to do with it being the most scary thing ever. Nowadays, it's not scary at all.

I could have sworn this was done recently. So I'll just say the game that leaves all of those games previously mentioned in the dust

Eternal Darkness

At the time it messed with you, no not you as the character. I mean it messed with you, it would say it erased your data, it would say insert disc two when there WAS no disc 2. That game SCREWS with your mind badly.

The atmosphere in Dead Space was GREAT... I did find it pretty scary, even though I keep reading about people that didn't.

Also: Silent Hill 3 (the second one was better, but the third was scarier) and AvP2 (yes, really!).

System Shock 2.

The first time I played that, I almost pissed my pants. And wowed to never play it after dark...

Nicely oppressive/scary atmosphere was also present in the Aliens vs Predator(s), Human campaigns. Watching for that motion detector bleep in the dark corridors, flashlight battery almost empty, Seeing a 'bleep' in the detector and emptying my clip into the darkness in that direction. Only to sigh in relief when a suddenly flickering lamp reveals that it was simply elevator doors opening and closing and opening again on their own accord... Only to see two aliens stand motionlessly on top of it, staring right back at me as I my gun is reloading. Then they pounce...

Felt like screaming like a little girl at that point.

However, I will admit that hearing those pricks breathing from across the room is nerve racking. Like when you had to push those dumpsters(?) with Ashley and you hear the Iron Maiden's & Regenerator's breathing or whatever they do...

I kept thinking one was going to sneak from behind me and kill Ashley. :l

Silent Hill 2 was pretty scary. 4, not so much.

Easily the scariest game I've ever played, however, is Condemned 1 (haven't played 2). It was sooooooooooooo atmospheric--I've never had a game get in my head like Condemned did. The frantic-ness of the combat and the sinister-ness of the plot fit in brilliantly. Everything about that game was so intense... every moment was almost overwhelming.

...and that sense of being overwhelmed is how to truly scare someone. Silent Hill was scary on a psychological level, but Condemned was scary on a physical andpsychological level. Every moment has you on the breaking point, and the slightest things will make you piss yourself. Terrifying.

Condemned: Criminal Origins is the only game to ever scare me. No resident evil, silent hill, shock of the system or bio variety can so much as startle me. Fear was a sad attempt as well, a good shooter though.
