At 34 I'm pretty well jaded being a science fiction/fantasy/horror fan. It's increasingly difficult for me to look back at anything and say "you know that was really scary".
Without getting into "jump out at you" frights I have to say that Fatal Frame 2 and Silent Hill 4 were probably the "best" overall in my opinion as far as I can still judge such things. I simply found the premise of Silent Hill 4 more unnerving than the more traditional town exploration games. I wonder how SH 4 would have turned out had it been made as it's own (non SH) game as originally intended, and perhaps launched it's own franchise. Right now I think it gets a bad rap due to it's development (as a seperate game) and sheer differantness from the rest of the SH Franchise.
Truthfully I do not consider the scare factor of Fatal Frame to come from only having a Camera. The bloody Camera Obscura is a powerful magical artifact ideally suited to what it does, and far more effective in that setting than any array of guns could ever be. Honestly I'm pretty sure Fatal Frame would be a "no win Scenario" for your typical gun toting hero (even a Space Marine hero like the guy from GoW 2, or Master Chief) since I'm not convinced these things could be harmed by physical weapons. Thinking back to Japanese horror movies that inspired this kind of thing especially.
It's totally out of context, but considering that in Japanese/Japanese Inspired Horror movies they have ghosts do things like form inside the hood of someone's Sweatshirt and take them out (Grudge 2, American version I believe), I figure not even powered armor would protect you from these things.
Of course when dealing with enchanted weapons and such it becomes more debatable (ie I'd imagine Dante would have little trouble with them using his weapons).
